In the dynamic first quarter of the 20th century, Louis Comfort Tiffany and his Tiffany Studios in New York City produced 24 distinctly different bronze desk-set patterns with nearly 1,000 different items sold separately, so that successful business leaders could decide which and how many they could arrange on their desks. The typical set might include inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and decorative ends for the desk blotter. Some patterns have a dozen or fewer items, but a few patterns have about 80 items available. Over 600 color photographs show most of the desk set items, with carefully researched text, including their Tiffany item numbers, markings, sizes, related pieces, and rarity, and an indispensible Master List of all the original Tiffany Studios items, including lamps, planters, match holders, etc., in numerical order. It will help to identify pieces never seen before and mismatched and put-together items. This is the most comprehensice collecting guide to the subject..

For years scientists turned to the CRC Handbook of Laser Science & Technology for reliable data on optical materials. Out of print for several years, that standard-setting work now has a successor: the Handbook of Optical Materials.
During and after his term as interim Central Falls superintendent in 2006-2007, Bill Holland sought answers to why some Central Falls High School students had school success while over half of their classmates failed to graduate. Much can be learned from how these students survived in a chronically low-achieving school located in the poorest community in the state. Holland provides behind-the-scenes details on the issues of poverty, ineffective teaching, and cultural differences while also advising students, parents, and teachers on ways to gain greater educational success. Before the book was completed, a federal and state mandate unexpectedly resulted in the superintendent having to adopt a turn-around model and fire the entire high school faculty and staff-an action that set off a firestorm between the school and state leadership and the American Federation of Teachers. The conflict made national headlines and was mentioned by President Obama as a prime example of a "last resort" approach in reforming failing inner-city schools.
Selecting School Leaders provides the accounts of a novice elementary principal, an experienced elementary principal, and a veteran superintendent who encounter considerable difficulties in their positions and are forced to resign. Holland explains why leadership failed in each case and how it might have been avoided. This book also focuses on matching the needs of a school organization with the right leader and relates the leadership theories of servant leadership, emotional intelligence, and change to issues highlighted in each case study. Includes: * A brief analysis of each case and a series of commonalties found in the cases * A list of recommendations that serve as a helpful guide to school leaders * Tips to executive committees on conducting improved searches This guide is of particular interest to school boards, school administrators, college professors, students in leadership courses, and executive search committees. Parents and community leaders will also find the book valuable.
Four students Bryant Estrada, Guillermo Ronquillo, Theresa Agonia, and George Carle graduated in 2009 from a small poverty stricken, low performing urban city high school on the outskirts of Providence, Rhode Island, and attended four different colleges. Fifty-two percent of their classmates had dropped out at Central Falls High, and after a union dispute in 2010 caused by a federal and state mandate, all high school teachers were fired. This action resulted in the school becoming the national poster child for high school "drop-out factories." In a press conference, even President Obama weighed in and supported the mass teacher firing. Hope Realized goes beyond the research and rhetoric as the students describe the highs and lows of their college journeys.Teachers and school reformers can learn much from their compelling and insightful stories.

This newly expanded book on Louis Icart - one of France's most well known art deco artists - now includes a section on his oil paintings, as well as over 512 different etchings, painstakingly acquired and photographed. Particular attention has been given to the early years (1911-1924), when Icart was a relatively unknown artist and his edition sizes were small. With few exceptions, the book contains large, full color illustrations that give the reader a true representation of the full-size etchings. The authors clarify some of the existing confusion surrounding Icart's work, explaining the variations in his signature, the use of the "Windmill" seal and other seals, and the myriad copyright notations found on his artwork. The illustrations have been carefully measured and dated. This is a great addition to the Icart legacy.

Maxfield Parrish was one of the rare artists whose work was immensely popular during his own lifetime. His brilliant use of color, attention to detail, and flights of fancy enchanted the public. His images were used to illustrate books and magazines, advertise products, grace calendars, and adorn walls. The Collectible Maxfield Parrish presents the great wealth and beauty of Maxfield Parrish's work in beautiful full-color images. This new book is focused on those items that are available in the market place and can be collected by the average person with a little diligence and investment of time and money. This is an essential reference for Parrish collectors and for any one who has an interest in the development of the illustrator's art in America.
