In Latin America, where even today writing has remained a restricted form of expression, the task of generating consent and imposing the emergent nation-state as the exclusive form of the political, was largely conferred to the image. Furthermore, at the moment of its historical demise, the new, 'postmodern' forms of sovereignty appear to rely even more heavily on visual discourses of power. However, a critique of the iconography of the modern state-form has been missing. This volume is the first concerted attempt by cultural, historical and visual scholars to address the political dimension of visual culture in Latin America, in a comparative perspective spanning various regions and historical stages. The case studies are divided into four sections, analysing the formation of a public sphere, the visual politics of avant-garde art, the impact of mass society on political iconography, and the consolidation and crisis of territory as a key icon of the state.

Who are the important poets of Latin America since the 1950s? What are the key features of their work? This book shows that contemporary Latin-American poetry continues to be as exciting as it was with Pablo Neruda and César Vallejo. Providing substantial excerpts from the work of Ernesto Cardenal, Nicanor Parra, Carmen Ollé, and others, together with translations and detailed readings, this is an excellent guide to the new poetry of Latin America.
The purpose of the book is to enhance the concept of Technique in the teaching and practice of Social Work. Over the years Technique has not been stressed as a part of practice even though the actual practice of Social Work consists of the utilization of techniques in addition to theory and the process of assessment and diagnosis. The book seeks to achieve its goal in four ways. It addresses the way the concept of Tchnique has or has not been used over the years. It addresses the need for a clear definition of technique. It analysis the qualities that Technique should have at this point in our history of clinical practice. It then formulates and presents a definition of technique for our thesis based on this definition. It then presents a brief discussion of 101 Techniques discussed in contemporary literature by discussing each one's place in practice a bit about its history and necessary knowledge skills to use responsibly. It addresses the latter by grouping a level of risk involved in its utilization.

The collected poems of William Rowe, containing works written between 1992 and 2016. Afterword by Sean Bonney. This book is concerned with the shimmering of the real, where this carries the truth of the world we're inside of. The concern is political. It includes the need for the destruction of bourgeois reality, the suspension of their law, their forms, and the opening of a space for a new reality. There's pain and suffering in this but also joy.
A Cruise to the Galapagos Islands (Un crucero a las Islas Galapagos) was the last book published by Antonio Cisneros before his death in 2012. The book has the subtitle, New Marian Songs (nuevos cantos marianos) and consists of 25 prose poems that invoke the Virgin as protector in danger, not in order to escape from fear but so as to traverse the zones of greatest anxiety, without turning the gaze away from catastrophe. The themes of shipwreck, illness, and death occur alongside intense alertness of the skin to the prick of an insulin injection, the feel of salt on things that flash through the slit of a skirt, or the body sensitized to the prickle of a woolly blanket on a hot night. This absolute physical aliveness causes the image of the Virgin to give way to a shipwrecked man's vision of a bar with pints of beer coming towards him over the sea. The journey to the fabled Galapagos Islands, where of course Darwin discovered the secret of the history of flesh, is both physical and symbolic. The book is a celebration of life by a man approaching his own death, a last gift to the world. Lima and its beaches, Peruvian Amazonia and its animals, France and Virginia, the poet's daughters and grandchildren, also appear, marking intense joy at the borders of catastrophe.
