Wits University celebrates 100 years of academic and research excellence, innovation, and social justice in 2022. The origins of Wits lie in the South African School of Mines, which was established in Kimberley in 1896 and transferred to Johannesburg as the Transvaal Technical Institute in 1904, becoming the Transvaal University College in 1906 and renamed the South African School of Mines and Technology four years later. Full university status was granted in 1922, incorporating the College as the University of the Witwatersrand. Professor Jan H. Hofmeyr was its first Principal.
The University of the Witwatersrand occupies a special place in the hearts and
minds of South Africans. Its history is inextricably linked with the development of
Johannesburg, with mining and economic development, and with political and social
activism across the country.
Wits University at 100: From Excavation to Innovation captures important moments of
Wits’ story in celebration of the university’s centenary in 2022. It explores Wits’ origins,
the space and place that it occupies in society, and its transformation as it prepares
the ground for the next century. From its humble beginnings as a mining college in
Johannesburg to its current position as a flourishing and inclusive university, Wits
University at 100 is a story of innovation driven from the global South.
In text and image, Wits is presented as a dynamic institution that thrives because
of its people, many of whom, in one way or another, have shifted the world. The
experiences, achievements and insights of past and present ‘Witsies’ come alive in this
glossy, full-colour book that maps the university’s vision for the future.
Shaping markets through competition and economic regulation is at the heart of addressing the development challenges facing countries in southern Africa. The contributors to Competition Law And Economic Regulation: Addressing Market Power In Southern Africa critically assess the efficacy of the competition and economic regulation frameworks, including the impact of a number of the regional competition authorities in a range of sectors throughout southern Africa.
Featuring academics as well as practitioners in the field, the book addresses issues common to southern African countries, where markets are small and concentrated, with particularly high barriers to entry, and where the resources to enforce legislation against anti-competitive conduct are limited. What is needed, the contributors argue, is an understanding of competition and regional integration as part of an inclusive growth agenda for Africa. By examining competition and regulation in a single framework, and viewing this within the southern African experience, this volume adds new perspectives to the global competition literature.
It is an essential reference tool and will be of great interest to policymakers and regulators, as well as the rapidly growing ecosystem of legal practitioners and economists engaged in the field.

Pie' (1999), the characters descend on their home town East Great
Falls, Michigan for their ten-year high school reunion. Over the

William Scott), Oz (Chris Klein) and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas)

still married, but things get wobbly when their next door neighbour
develops a crush on Jim. Meanwhile, Stifler, stuck in a dead-end
temping job, is having a hard time with the ladies, Oz has hit the
big time after winning a TV talent show, and Finch is still
hankering after Stifler's 'MILF' mother.
This Research Handbook considers many aspects of corporate
liability, beginning with a fundamental explanation of what the
company is, through depictions of corporate liability in theory,
and on to the key areas of liability in practice. While including a
timeless distillation of the guiding principles, each contribution
explores the emerging boundaries of corporate liability issues so
as to bring understanding to new levels. Cross-jurisdictional and
interdisciplinary in nature, the contributions cover corporate and
participant liability under statutory law, tort and criminal law,
and corporate fiduciary and securities law. Specific perspectives
include those on corporate vicarious liability, accountability for
AI labour, and procedural law challenges. This Research Handbook
examines not only the current state of play, but also predicts
trends likely to feature in the development of corporate liability,
including those in the areas of ESG and technology. Featuring
contributions from leading scholars in their respective fields,
this Research Handbook will be essential reading for scholars and
students of commercial law, corporate law, and corporate
governance. It will also be beneficial for judges, legal
practitioners, and policymakers specialising in corporate
liability.
Robert De Niro and Paul Dano star as an estranged father and son
attempting to reconnect in this drama based on writer Nick Flynn's
memoir of his difficult early life. With his con-man father
Jonathan (De Niro) having disappeared out his life when he was a
child and his mother Jody (Julianne Moore) subsequently committing
suicide, struggling writer Nick (Dano) finds it hard to get his
life back on track. Things are complicated further when, after a
break of 18 years, an alcoholic and delusional Jonathan turns up at
the homeless shelter where Nick now works, looking for a place to
sleep. Over the coming weeks Nick wrestles with his demons as he
tries to make sense of everything life has thrown at him so far.
The philosophy at the heart of Bob de Wit's landmark text Strategy
is that an understanding of the topic can only be gained by
exposure to the many opposite perspectives in the field.
Recognizing that there is no simple answer to the question of 'what
is strategy', the author navigates readers through contrasting
viewpoint readings to encourage discussion and debate, and
illustrative cases to acknowledge the importance of strategy in the
world of business. Placing the student at the centre of the
strategy debates encourages the qualities of creativity,
flexibility, independence and analytical depth that are needed to
become a strategic thinker.

Ned Witting is a political junkie with a businessman's perspective.
In Political Gridlock, he looks at Congress through the eyes of an
efficiency expert and considers why it isn't working the way it
should. He doesn't concern himself with whether it produces tax
reductions or affordable health care; he investigates why it
produces so little of either. In Political Gridlock, he explains
how our political process has invisibly disenfranchised moderates
in favor of MoveOn.org liberals on the left and Tea Party
conservatives on the right. The book examines factors that are
unrecognized and ignored by political pundits but that empower
political extremes, allowing them to block constructive
legislation. It is also the how-to manual on how to reboot our
government. It evaluates the obstacles to effective governance and
suggests solutions for each. In plain language, Political Gridlock
outlines the steps necessary to reclaim Congress and get government
working again. It is a book Americans have been waiting for.
