Current database technology and computer hardware allow us to gather, store, access, and manipulate massive volumes of raw data in an efficient and inexpensive manner. In addition, the amount of data collected and warehoused in all industries is growing every year at a phenomenal rate. Nevertheless, our ability to discover critical, non-obvious nuggets of useful information in data that could influence or help in the decision making process, is still limited. Knowledge discovery (KDD) and Data Mining (DM) is a new, multidisciplinary field that focuses on the overall process of information discovery from large volumes of data. The field combines database concepts and theory, machine learning, pattern recognition, statistics, artificial intelligence, uncertainty management, and high-performance computing. To remain competitive, businesses must apply data mining techniques such as classification, prediction, and clustering using tools such as neural networks, fuzzy logic, and decision trees to facilitate making strategic decisions on a daily basis. Knowledge Discovery for Business Information Systems contains a collection of 16 high quality articles written by experts in the KDD and DM field from the following countries: Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China (Hong Kong), Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, Singapore and USA.
In today's business arena information is one of the most important resources possessed by enterprises. In order to support proper information flow, businesses deploy transactional systems, build decision support systems or launch management information systems. Unfortunately, the majority of information systems do not take advantage of recent developments in knowledge management, thus exposing companies to the risk of missing important information, or what is even worse, leading them to misinterpret information. Information is a key factor in business today, and data warehousing has become a major activity in the development and management of information systems to support the proper flow of information. The BIS conference series follows trends in academia and business research; thus the theme of the BIS 2016 conference was Smart Business Ecosystems". This recognizes that no business is an island and competition is increasingly taking place between business networks and no longer between individual companies. A variety of aspects is relevant for designing and understanding smart business ecosystems. They reach from new business models, value chains and processes to all aspects of analytical, social and enterprise applications and platforms as well as cyber-physical infrastructures. The computer science and information systems topics covered include data warehouses, ERP, XML, ontologies, rule languages, software engineering and Business Process Management.
BIS 2010 held on 3-5 May 2010 in Berlin, Germany was the 13th in a series of international conferences on Business Information Systems. The BIS conference series has been recognised by professionals from its very beginning as a forum for the exchange and dissemination of topical research in the development, - plementation, application and improvement of computer systems for business processes. The theme ofthe conferencewas"Future InternetBusiness Services." A n- ber of new initiatives are already underway to address the challenges related to explosive development of Internet applications, hence the conference topics: Searchand KnowledgeSharing,Data and InformationSecurity,Web Experience Modelling. Although many people announced that SOA was dead there is - doubtedly a strong need for service-orientation. This was addressed by a topic: Services and Repositories. More and more e?ort is put on explaining and und- standing complex processes as could be seen in topics: Business Processes and Rules, Data Mining for Processes, Visualisation in BPM. Finally, the classical business aspects were covered in session: ERP and SCM. Altogether, a set of 25 papers illustrating these trends were selected for the presentation during the main event, grouped in 8 sessions. The Program C- mittee consisted of almost 100 members who carefully evaluated all the subm- ted papers. Each submission was reviewed on the average by 3.1 programme committee members. Only the best quality papers were selected, resulting in an acceptance rate of less than 30%.
Over the last few decades, business information systems have been one of the most important factors in the transition toward a knowledge-basedeconomy. At thesametimetheyhavebeensubjecttocontinuousrapiddevelopmentandin- vation driven both by industry and by academia. During the last 12 years these innovationswerecarefullyobservedbut alsoshapedbyresearchersattending the annual International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS). Recently, apart from the main conference, workshops covering speci?c topics in the area of business information systems have been organized. In 2007 and 2008, the BIS conference featured two and three workshops, respectively. Their proceedings were published on-line and outstanding workshop papers were - cluded in two special issues of international journals. This year nine workshops were successfully organized in conjunction with BIS 2009, covering the topics of Deep Web (ADW), applications and economics of knowledge-based techno- gies (AKTB, ECONOM), SOA (SDS-SOA), legalIT (LIT), socialWeb andWeb 2. 0 (SAW, Enterprise X. 0), e-learning (EeLT) and enterprise systems in higher education (ESHE). This volume contains papers that were accepted and p- sented at the BIS 2009 workshops. Additionally it featuresthe BIS 2009 keynote speech by Wil van der Aalst, as well as two invited speeches presented at LIT and ECONOM / Enterprise X. 0 workshops. Workshop papers included in this volume were subject to a thorough review procedure. Each submitted paper received from two up to ?ve reviews (a - tal of 208 reviews were received, with an average of 2. 9 reviews per paper) by over 130 members of the Program Committees of the workshops.

The theme of the conference was "Information Systems for Agile Organi- tions." The material collected in this volume covers recent tendencies in making organizations more responsive to external conditions. On the one hand, onto- gies are adopted as a tool for better data and information management. On the other hand, ?exible information systems based on process orientation are being developed. A set of 22 papers illustrating these trends were selected for presentation during the main event. The articles are grouped into the following conference topics: Ontologies in Organizations, Ontologies and Security, Process Modelling, Process Analysis and Mining, Service-Oriented Architecture, Web Search, SocialIssues, andERP. The Program Committee consisted of over 90 members, who carefully ev- uated all the submitted papers. The careful review process assured that each paper underwent thorough evaluation and received many valuable comments. Only the best-quality papers were selected, resulting in an acceptance rate of less than 30%. The regular program was complemented by outstanding keynote speakers. We were honored to host leading experts in business process management and information management: Wil van der Aalst (Eindhoven University of Techn- ogy, The Netherlands) and Asuncion Gomez-Perez (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain)."
BIS 2008 was the 11th in a series of international conferences on Business - formation Systems. The conference took place in Innsbruck which means that after Klagenfurt it was the second Austrian BIS edition. The BIS conference series from its veryroots has been recognized by professionalsas a forum for the exchangeand disseminationof topicalresearchin the development,implemen- tion, application and improvement of computer systems for business processes. The theme of this conference was"Business Processes and Social Contexts- Reaching Beyond the Enterprise."The material collected in this volume covers research trends as well as current achievements and cutting-edge developments in the area of modern business information systems. A set of 41 papers were - lectedforthepresentationduringthemaineventandgroupedaroundconference topics: Business Process Management, Service Discovery and Composition, - tologies, Information Retrieval, Interoperability, Mobility and Contexts, Ent- prise Resource Planning, Wikis and Folksonomies, Rules and Semantic Queries. The Program Committee consisted of more than 80 members that carefully evaluated all the submitted papers. This year they were supported by an Easy- Chair review system, and again, we observed an increase in the quality of the reviews. This not only raised the quality of the conference but also positively a?ected the work of the authors. The regular program was complemented by the outstanding keynote spe- ers. We are proud that BIS 2008 hosted Alistair Barros (SAP, Australia), Hans Ulrich Buhl (University of Augsburg, Germany), Fabio Ciravegna (University of She?eld, UK), John Davies (BT, UK), and Frank Leymann (University of Stuttgart, Germany).
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Business Information Systems, BIS 2007, held in Poznan, Poland in April 2007.
