Over the last thirty years, China has developed one of the worlda (TM)s largest public research programs in agricultural biotechnology. Building on a long tradition of agricultural advances, Chinese scientists have applied biotechnology techniques to develop hundreds of novel crop varieties suited to local farming conditions and challenges. Agricultural Biotechnology in China: Origins and Prospects is a comprehensive examination of how the origins of biotechnology research agendas, along with the effectiveness of the seed delivery system and biosafety oversight, help to explain current patterns of crop development and adoption in China. Based on firsthand insights from Chinaa (TM)s laboratories and farms, Valerie Karplus and Dr. Xing Wang Deng explore the implications of Chinaa (TM)s investment for the nationa (TM)s rural development, environmental footprint, as well as its global scientific and economic competitiveness.
This book seeks to fill in the current technology gap with a specific collection of technologies developed for the study of protein function at a proteome scale. Chapters explore topics from protein functions to other aspects of protein analysis, especially in post-translational modification, as most proteomes use this mechanism in some capacity to carry out their unique role in cellular regulation. By comparing functional proteomes, this presents a bridge to other levels of system biology research including genomics and metabolomics in order to provide readers with a relatively complete picture for how one might study the biological system of their interest. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and cutting-edge, Functional Proteomics: Methods and Protocols collects these novel technologies in the hope that new frontiers in biological research will be created, important drug targets can be identified, and clinically validated biomarkers and diagnostic tests can be further developed.
In Physiognomy in Ming China: Fortune and the Body, Xing Wang investigates the intellectual and technical contexts in which the knowledge of physiognomy (xiangshu) was produced and transformed in Ming China (1368-1644 C.E.). Known as a fortune-telling technique via examining the human body and material objects, Xing Wang shows how the construction of the physiognomic body in many Ming texts represent a unique, unprecedented 'somatic cosmology'. Applying an anthropological reading to these texts and providing detailed analysis of this technique, the author proves that this physiognomic cosmology in Ming China emerged as a part of a new body discourse which differs from the modern scholarly discourse on the body.
This volume reports recent development in nuclear structure physics and closely related topics. Particularly, it centers on new methodologies and recent applications of the nuclear shell model such as quantum Monte Carlo methods, large-scale shell model calculations and microscopic theories of effective interactions. Each review focuses on one fundamental topic closely related to the nuclear shell model. Each topic is covered in sufficient depth and detail to be accessible to a wide audience including nuclear engineers and astrophysicists and those working in various fields of scientific computing and modelling.
