This book investigates the ethical challenges the internet presents to contemporary parliamentary democracy in Europe and how these challenges are being addressed. It fills an important gap: current literature until now has largely focused on the study of internet usage by politicians and institutions.

With the ever widening scope of participation in internet-based communication, there are widely differing views on its potential social, economic and political impact, and whether parliamentary democracy will be strengthened or weakened in the information age. Key questions include:

• To what extent is the internet being used in parliamentary political communication (the ethics of behaviour)?
• Should there be any institutional control and monitoring of parliamentarians' use of the internet (the ethics of code of conduct)?
• What impact does the internet have upon the principle of trust and transparency in the context of parliamentary democracy (the ethics of accountability)?

The book compares four European parliaments in Europe: the British, European, Portuguese and Swedish Parliaments, using both quantitative methods (questionnaires and survey of websites) and qualitative methods (workshops and face-to-face interviews with parliamentarians and parliamentary staff).

This volume analyses New Delhi's reaction to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the rise of politics of connectivity and infrastructure building which has heightened Sino-Indian rivalry in South Asia and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It can be evidenced that the BRI has transformed the Sino-Indian dynamics from a 'managed rivalry' to an intense geo-political competition. It is contended that competition is inevitable when two powers rise in the same neighbourhood. The Indian government has opposed the BRI since its inception noting that the 'BRI violates India's sovereignty and territorial integrity' because one of the flagship BRI projects - the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - runs through (Pakistan-controlled) Kashmir which India claims to be its own territory. It has consistently maintained that China's 'connectivity initiatives must be based on universally recognized international norms, good governance, rule of law, openness, transparency and equality, and must be pursued in a manner that respects sovereignty and territorial integrity' of other states. Beyond those stated reservations, New Delhi is concerned about the BRI infrastructure and connectivity projects in the smaller South Asian countries and the Indian Ocean littoral states. India has traditionally viewed South Asia and the IOR as its backyard over which it has historically maintained a position of influence. It is apprehensive that the BRI projects will enhance Beijing's stature and undermine India's influence in the region. In eleven chapters including Introduction and Conclusion, this book explores the dimensions of the rivalry and analyses the causes, dynamics and implications of an accelerated Sino-Indian competition.

Based on in-depth study of the electronics giant Philips, Corporate Strategy, Public
Policy and New Technologies examines the key factors which have determined the
success or failure of new technologies and the global competitiveness of firms within a major
European consumer industry. Drawing on the insights gained from intensive empirical
research into the company's growth, structure and competitive strategy, the book traces the
reciprocal influences of Philips and of European Community policymaking on each other and
on the development of the industry since the 1970s.

The core of the book focuses on
detailed case studies of three major technological initiatives, and analyses the reasons for
their success or failure: the European VCR (Video Cassette Recorder) industry and Philips'
VCR 2000 format; Philips and the development of the European HDTV (High Definition
Television) system; and Philips' CD-i (Compact Disc-interactive) project. All three studies
raise important issues of competition, collaboration, technology and the role of public policy,
with a firm theoretical grounding in the most relevant and up-to-date academic
research.

In addition to providing an instructive analysis of the performance of an industry
at the levels of the firm, the state and the European Community, the book emphasises that the
strategies and policies discussed were adopted largely in response to the global challenge
from the USA and, above all, Japan.
