This book provides case-based empirical research and explores the process of China's corporatization reform and investigates whether the reform has altered the process of strategy formulation and implementation of large Chinese SOEs. The key questions are what are processes of ownership restructuring taking place in the in the large SOEs and what impact do these institutional changes have for strategy formulation and implementation. Of particular interest is the role and importance of networks played in the process.

China has become one of the biggest exporters of goods into the global economy. Yongjin Zhang offers a detailed account of the political and economic context, both domestic and international, in which China's nascent global businesses began to emerge in the late 1980s. The analysis of changing policy regimes for China's outward investment is combined with an institutional investigation of the rise and operation of three prominent Chinese multinationals. The first systematic study available of the political economy of China's emerging global businesses, this book fills a significant gap in the literature on the transformation of the Chinese economy.

China's rise to power in the twentieth century has been accompanied by its strenuous efforts to enter the international society. This study reinterprets China's international relations in the second half of the century by looking at China's alienation from and integration into international society. It starts by refuting the conventional wisdom that China was in revolutionary isolation from 1949 to 1970. It contends that alienation, rather than isolation, best describes China's anomalous position in the international society in the period.;The study investigates the process in which a convergence of views has happened between China and other member states on key institutions such as war and peace and revolution and development in the international system. This convergence, it is argued, has in the last decade led to China's consent, sometimes reluctant and sometimes problematic, to common rules and institutions in conducting international relations. The incorporation of China into the existing global international society has found more eloquent expression in the unprecedented economic integration of China with the world economy in the last fifteen years. It argues, however, that C

This book provides a powerful diagnosis of why the global governance of science struggles in the face of emerging powers. Through unpacking critical events in China and India over the past twenty years, it demonstrates that the 'subversiveness' assumed in the two countries' rise in the life sciences reflects many of the regulatory challenges that are shared worldwide. It points to a decolonial imperative for science governance to be responsive and effective in a cosmopolitan world. By highlighting epistemic injustice within contemporary science, the book extends theories of decolonisation. -- .

China is well-known as the largest recipient of foreign direct investment among developing countries. Little is known so far of the fact that China has become (quietly) one of the most significant third world investors in the global economy. This book traces the evolutionary path of China's outward investment activities and examines the political economy of the rapid rise of China's global businesses in the context of the economic reforms since 1978. The analysis of changing policy regimes for China's outward investment is complemented by detailed investigations of the rise and operation of three pioneering Chinese multinationals to illustrate this new thrust of China's engagement with the global economy. China's global reach examined in this study explores issues concerning China's creative responses to globalisation and the processes through which China his becoming a globalised state. The first ever book-length study of China's global investment activities, this book fills a significant gap in the literature on China's economic transformation and the rise of multinational corporations from developing countries.

An introduction to machine learning methods and their applications to problems in bioinformatics Machine learning techniques are increasingly being used to address problems in computational biology and bioinformatics. Novel computational techniques to analyze high throughput data in the form of sequences, gene and protein expressions, pathways, and images are becoming vital for understanding diseases and future drug discovery. Machine learning techniques such as Markov models, support vector machines, neural networks, and graphical models have been successful in analyzing life science data because of their capabilities in handling randomness and uncertainty of data noise and in generalization. From an internationally recognized panel of prominent researchers in the field, Machine Learning in Bioinformatics compiles recent approaches in machine learning methods and their applications in addressing contemporary problems in bioinformatics. Coverage includes: feature selection for genomic and proteomic data mining; comparing variable selection methods in gene selection and classification of microarray data; fuzzy gene mining; sequence-based prediction of residue-level properties in proteins; probabilistic methods for long-range features in biosequences; and much more. Machine Learning in Bioinformatics is an indispensable resource for computer scientists, engineers, biologists, mathematicians, researchers, clinicians, physicians, and medical informaticists. It is also a valuable reference text for computer science, engineering, and biology courses at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels.
This book is intended for urologists and pathologists who practice in an office setting. In this setting, bladder and prostate diseases are most commonly encountered. Therefore, bladder and prostate biopsy and urine cytology specimens are frequently obtained by urologists, which require pathologists assistance to interpret. In the office setting, communication between urologists and pathologists becomes feasible, which is paramount for accurate diagnosis and better patient management. For this purpose, this book includes clinically relevant information for pathologists, concise pathology terminology, and diagnostic tests for urologists. This book describes the common clinical and pathological entities, and is written in a bullet format for easy and quick reference. For visual review, over 150 diagrams, histologic images, and other images are included. The first and second chapters describe bladder and prostate diseases, focusing on clinical-pathological correlation. Therefore, this book is also useful for pathology and urology residents in training, in preparation for board examination(s), or as a refresher reference for recertification. The third chapter is dedicated to office-based pathology laboratory services, which outlines laboratory instrumentation, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This information is useful for urologists and pathologists who are involved in the management of an office-based pathology laboratory. Finally, I greatly appreciate Josephine Wu DDS, Esq. and Miao Cui MD, MS, who contributed to this excellent third chapter.
This is an exciting new collection sure to create ripples throughout Canadian film studies a| an important new addition to the literature on Canadian screen culture. - ZoA" Druick, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University Rain/Drizzle/Fog : Film and Television in Atlantic Canada is the first scholarly study of film and television in Atlantic Canada. With contributors from across the country, the book provides a broad historical overview of film and television in the region, as well as essays on specific topics in contemporary popular television (Trailer Park Boys), early television (Don Messer's Jubilee), and the work of filmmakers such as Bill MacGillivray, Andrea Dorfman, Thom Fitzgerald, and others. This collection is informed by a critical perspective on prevailing stereotypes of culture in the Atlantic region, as well as by history and political-economy debates on the relationship between Atlantic and central Canada. It is also in large part a response to the continued marginalization of regional film and television within the field of Canadian film studies, which has traditionally been dominated by a critical and artistic canon from central Canada and Quebec. Rain/Drizzle/Fog challenges the prevailing tendency to homogenize the complexity of Canadian cultural production and instead celebrates the regional distinctions that make Atlantic film and television unique. Based on interviews with members of grassroots organisations, media and government institutions, Green Politics in China provides an in-depth and engaging account of the novel ways in which Chinese society is responding to its environmental crisis, using examples rarely captured in Western media or academia. Joy Y. Zhang and Michael Barr explain how environmental problems are transforming Chinese society through new developments such as the struggle for clean air, low-carbon conspiracy theories, new forms of public fund raising and the international tactics of grassroots NGOs. In doing so, they challenge static understandings of state-society relations in China. Green Politics in China is an illuminating and detailed investigation which provides crucial insights into how China is both changing internally and emerging as a powerful player in global environmental politics.
