This book is the first effort to develop a broad and deep
perspective on the emerging space occupied by "non-state actors" in
China in the context of global environmental governance. It will
serve as a primer both for scholars seeking to understand China's
environmental governance system and for practitioners working with
policymakers and administrators within that system. Individual
chapters explore what works in achieving social change,
domestically as well as globally, and will provide guidance to
activists and directors of NGOs as well as scholars.
This book is a joint endeavour of the three partner universities to
develop a book with in-depth and state-of-art analysis for the
academic community of East Asia and the world. Past disasters, like
the 2008 Great Sichuan Earthquake in China and the 2011 Great East
Japan Earthquake, saw good efforts of East Asian countries in
helping each other. Such a trend has been further strengthened in
these countries' recent cooperation and mutual support in their
fight against Covid-19 pandemic. While China, Japan, and South
Korea are geographically and culturally contiguous and hence may
share some characteristics in their risk management principles and
practices, there may also be many significant differences due to
their different socioeconomic and political systems. The
commonalities and variances in East Asia risk management systems
are also reflected by their recent responses to the Covid-19
challenges. While all three countries demonstrated overall success
in controlling the epidemic, the measures taken by them were
different. This research will be of interest to policymakers,
scholars and economists.
This book aims to bring together a series of analyses on
international development assistance in the BRICS, the group of
countries that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South
Africa. The BRICS states comprise approximately 3 billion people
(~40% of the World's population) and in terms of GDP account for
16.8 trillion dollars (~22% of the World's economy). Over the last
decade the loose coalition has evolved to become a formal
partnership on both economic and political fronts. The first formal
meeting of the then-four BRIC countries took place in 2006 during
the United Nations General Assembly. This was followed in 2009 by
the first summit of BRICS' heads of state, an event which has been
convened annually ever since. On 3-5 September 2017, the ninth
BRICS Summit was hosted in Xiamen, China. This book, an anthology
of scholars based in BRICS countries, provides invaluable insights
into the emerging global south coalition, and will be of interest
to scholars, employees of NGOs, and China watchers.
This edited volume presents case studies of the transformation of
China's public services over the past decade in China. As the
country has experienced fundamental changes in its demographic,
economic, social and environmental structures, demands on public
services have been increasing tremendously, and have become
unprecedentedly diverse. In response, innovations to provide new
services, expand service recipients, adopt new technologies, engage
partners, and streamline service processes have been employed
widely in China to increase service efficiency, enhance quality,
enlarge coverage, and improve citizen satisfaction. This book
examines prominent cases of public service innovations in China,
disclosing their causes, patterns, diffusion, and effects. These
cases provide interesting evidence about the nature and
effectiveness of public service innovations in China while
highlighting to what extent these innovations can be explained by
accepted theories and whether new theory building is needed. This
book will be of value to academics and policymakers seeking to
understand the evolving Chinese political system.
This book explores the changing face of development assistance.
China's One Belt, One Road development program is the largest
international investment scheme in history, surpassing the Marshall
Plan by an order of magnitude. In 2017, a group of top scholars
from Fudan, the London School of Economics, and other institutions
like the Institute of Development Studies, Australian National
University, and World Bank gathered to share findings and ideas
about the nature of New Development Assistance. A compilation of
their findings, this book will be of interest to NGOs,
policymakers, and academics.
Faced with unprecedented socioeconomic changes, China has
increasingly embraced collaborative governance (CG), the sharing of
power and discretion between and within public, private, and
nonprofit sectors for public purposes. This book analyzes new areas
of CG development such as environmental protection, disaster
response, and infrastructure.

This book presents research on prison privatisation in the US, with
a focus on state prison privatisation. The basic thrust is to
research the privatisation of a governmental function that is
traditionally treated as a core function and involves the use of
force. Specifically, the author researched the basic drives of
prison privatisation and the variation of the magnitude of state
prison privatisation among the 50 US states. The basic idea is to
examine the influence of political and pragmatic factors to make
sure the fundamental nature of the privatisation of imprisonment,
and further, of core governmental functions. The author's general
argument is that prison privatisation was pushed forward by the
changing political environment. Pragmatic and economic concerns or
demands are derived from the political changes and are of secondary
but still direct importance. This book has a detailed exploration
of the whole picture of prison privatisation, with rich data and
analysis.
