The VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) provides a standard
machine processable notation for describing hardware. VHDL is the
result of a collaborative effort between IBM, Intermetrics, and
Texas Instruments; sponsored by the Very High Speed Integrated Cir
cuits (VHSIC) program office of the Department of Defense,
beginning in 1981. Today it is an IEEE standard (1076-1987), and
several simulators and other automated support tools for it are
available commercially. By providing a standard notation for
describing hardware, especially in the early stages of the hardware
design process, VHDL is expected to reduce both the time lag and
the cost involved in building new systems and upgrading existing
ones. VHDL is the result of an evolutionary approach to language
devel opment starting with high level hardware description
languages existing in 1981. It has a decidedly programming language
flavor, resulting both from the orientation of hardware languages
of that time, and from a ma jor requirement that VHDL use Ada
constructs wherever appropriate. During the 1980's there has been
an increasing current of research into high level specification
languages for systems, particularly in the software area, and new
methods of utilizing specifications in systems de velopment. This
activity is worldwide and includes, for example, object oriented
design, various rigorous development methods, mathematical
verification, and synthesis from high level specifications. VAL
(VHDL Annotation Language) is a simple further step in the
evolution of hardware description languages in the direction of
applying new methods that have developed since VHDL was designed."

User engagement refers to the quality of the user experience that
emphasizes the positive aspects of interacting with an online
application and, in particular, the desire to use that application
longer and repeatedly. User engagement is a key concept in the
design of online applications (whether for desktop, tablet or
mobile), motivated by the observation that successful applications
are not just used, but are engaged with. Users invest time,
attention, and emotion in their use of technology, and seek to
satisfy pragmatic and hedonic needs. Measurement is critical for
evaluating whether online applications are able to successfully
engage users, and may inform the design of and use of applications.
User engagement is a multifaceted, complex phenomenon; this gives
rise to a number of potential measurement approaches. Common ways
to evaluate user engagement include using self-report measures,
e.g., questionnaires; observational methods, e.g. facial expression
analysis, speech analysis; neuro-physiological signal processing
methods, e.g., respiratory and cardiovascular accelerations and
decelerations, muscle spasms; and web analytics, e.g., number of
site visits, click depth. These methods represent various
trade-offs in terms of the setting (laboratory versus ``in the
wild''), object of measurement (user behaviour, affect or
cognition) and scale of data collected. For instance, small-scale
user studies are deep and rich, but limited in terms of
generalizability, whereas large-scale web analytic studies are
powerful but negate users' motivation and context. The focus of
this book is how user engagement is currently being measured and
various considerations for its measurement. Our goal is to leave
readers with an appreciation of the various ways in which to
measure user engagement, and their associated strengths and
weaknesses. We emphasize the multifaceted nature of user engagement
and the unique contextual constraints that come to bear upon
attempts to measure engagement in different settings, and across
different user groups and web domains. At the same time, this book
advocates for the development of ``good'' measures and good
measurement practices that will advance the study of user
engagement and improve our understanding of this construct, which
has become so vital in our wired world.

The 10th International Workshop on Information Security
Applications (WISA 2009) was held in Busan, Korea during August
25-27, 2009. The workshop was hosted by the Korea Institute of
Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC), supported by the
Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and
the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA), sponsored by the
Ministry of Public Administration and Security (MoPAS) and the
Korea Communications Commission (KCC), financially sponsored by the
ST. Ltd. The aim of the workshop was to serve as a forum for
presenting new research and experimental results in the area of
information security applications from academic communities as well
as from industry. The workshop program covered a wide range of
security aspects, from cryptography to systems and network security
and experimental work as well. It was our great pleasure and honor
to serve as the Program Committee Co-chairs of WISA2009. This year,
too, the proceedings of the workshop were published in the LNCS
series of Springer. The WISA 2009 Program Committee received 79
papers form 16 countries. This year the submissions were
exceptionally strong, and the committee accepted 27 papers for the
full paper presentation track. All the papers were carefully
evaluated through blind peer-review by at least three members of
the Program Comm- tee. We would like to say that acceptance is a
great achievement since the selection process was highly
competitive, and many good papers were not accepted.
The latest edition of this renowned textbook explores the states
and regimes of the Middle East and North Africa. Presenting heavily
revised, fully updated chapters contributed by the world's leading
experts, it analyzes the historical trajectory, political
institutions, economic development, and foreign policies of the
region's nearly two dozen countries. The volume can be used in
conjunction with its sister volume, The Societies of the Middle
East and North Africa, for a comprehensive overview of the region.
Chapters are organized and structured identically, giving
insightful windows into the nuances of each country's domestic
politics and foreign relations. Data tables and extensive annotated
bibliographies orient readers towards further research. Whether
used in conjunction with its sister volume or on its own, this book
provides the most comprehensive and detailed overview of the
region's varied politics. Five new experts cover the critical
country cases of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.
All chapters cover the latest events, including trends that have
remarkably changed in just a few years like the gradual end of the
Syrian civil war. As such, this textbook is invaluable to students
of Middle Eastern politics.. The ninth edition brings substantial
changes. All chapters also have a uniform, streamlined structure
that explores the historical context, social and economic
environment, political institutions, regime dynamics, and foreign
policy of each country. Fact boxes and political maps are now far
more extensive, and photographs and images also help illustrate key
points. Annotated bibliographies are vastly expanded, providing
nothing short of the best list of research references for each
country.
A definitive overview of what political scientists are working on
within the Middle East and North Africa. The Arab Uprisings of
2011-12 catalyzed a new wave of rigorous, deeply informed research
on the politics of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In The
Political Science of the Middle East, Marc Lynch, Jillian
Schwedler, and Sean Yom present the definitive overview of this
pathbreaking turn. This is a monumental stocktaking organized
around a singular theme: new theorizing from the MENA has advanced
the frontiers of comparative politics and international relations,
and the close-range study of the region occupies a core place in
mainstream political science. Its dozen chapters cover an
exhaustive array of topics, including authoritarianism and
democracy, contentious politics, regional security, military
institutions, conflict and violence, the political economy of
development, Islamist movements, identity and sectarianism, public
opinion, migration, and local politics. For each of these topics,
leading MENA experts and specialists highlight innovative concepts,
vibrant debates, diverse methodologies, and unexpected findings.
The result is an indispensable research primer, one that stands as
a generational statement from a regional subfield.

Based on comparative historical analyses of Iran, Jordan, and
Kuwait, Sean L. Yom examines the foreign interventions, coalitional
choices, and state outcomes that made the political regimes of the
modern Middle East. A key text for foreign policy scholars, From
Resilience to Revolution shows how outside interference can corrupt
the most basic choices of governance: who to reward, who to punish,
who to compensate, and who to manipulate. As colonial rule
dissolved in the 1930s and 1950s, Middle Eastern autocrats
constructed new political states to solidify their reigns, with
varying results. Why did equally ambitious authoritarians meet such
unequal fates? Yom ties the durability of Middle Eastern regimes to
their geopolitical origins. At the dawn of the postcolonial era,
many autocratic states had little support from their people and
struggled to overcome widespread opposition. When foreign powers
intervened to bolster these regimes, they unwittingly sabotaged the
prospects for long-term stability by discouraging leaders from
reaching out to their people and bargaining for mass support-early
coalitional decisions that created repressive institutions and
planted the seeds for future unrest. Only when they were secluded
from larger geopolitical machinations did Middle Eastern regimes
come to grips with their weaknesses and build broader coalitions.
This book contributes to the study of Thomas F. Torrance by
promoting his realist agenda, and the same time, expanding his
program that takes into consideration a well-nuanced pentecostal
spirituality. More specifically, it assesses the foundational
methodological framework of Torrance's scientific approach to
theology for the purpose of constructing a triadic methodological
structure for theological science. In doing so, it not only
recognizes Torrance's efforts to bridge the gap between science
(number), word (hermeneutics), and spirit (theo-philosophy), but
also critically reviews his theo-scientific project by identifying
his restrictive tendencies that limit the full outworking of human
spirituality and imagination. Based upon this analysis, this study
constructively modifies Torrance's theological science by
complementing his realist agenda with the pentecostally driven
pneumatological imagination. In the final analysis, Number, Word,
and Spirit argues that theological science grounded on the
pneumatological imagination can expand the restrictive tendencies
of Torrance's theo-scientific project, thereby giving rise to a
triadic analogical approach that recognizes the interplay of
ontologic, informal logic, and translogic for the development of a
theo-scientific method. The book can be used as a secondary reading
material for the courses in theological method, interdisciplinary
studies, and faith and science dialogue.
koreanischer Dichter vergleichen lasst. Nicht zuletzt wird die
grosse Wirkung des im deutschen Sprachraum vergessenen Romans von
F. Max Muller Die Deutsche Liebe in Korea dargestellt.
