This book focuses on the basics of particle physics, while covering as many frontier advances as possible.The book introduces readers to the principle of symmetry, properties and classification of particles, the quark model of hadrons and the interactions of particles. In the past decades, interdisciplinary investigations overlapping biology, medicine, information science, and engineering have formed a very exciting and active field that attracts scientists, medical doctors, and engineers with knowledge in different domains. A few examples of such investigations include neural prosthetic implants that aim to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from neurologic disease and injury; brain machine interfaces that sense, analyze, and translate electrical signals from the brain to build closed-loop, biofeedback systems; and fundamental studies of intelligence, cognitive functions, and psychological behaviors correlated to their neurological basis. Although this interdisciplinary area is still in its infancy, it can potentially create some of the most significant impact: treating diseases that are considered untreatable, interpretation and communication of neuron ensembles, or even a revolutionary perception and understanding of life different from philosophical or immaterial approaches. Fortunately, several academic societies recognize the value and impact of this growing field, firmly supporting related research. Such support will drive a booming future in the next twenty or thirty years. Research in this areais frequently project-driven, and the
generated knowledge has been scattered in different fields of
neuroscience, computation, material and technology, circuits and
system, clinical reports, and psychology the scope considerably
across the boundary of traditionally defined disciplines. "Neural
Computation, Neural Devices, and Neural Prosthesis" is intended to
assemble such knowledge, from there suggesting a systematic
approach guiding future educational and research activities. The
targeted audience includes both students and researchers.
This study presents a multi-disciplinary approach for investigating the interactions between groundwater and surface water in the semi-arid Hailiutu catchment in the Erdos Plateau, Northwest China. The study consists of statistical detection of river flow regime shifts at the basin level; multiple in-situ measurements for quantifying groundwater discharges using hydraulic, hydrochemical and temperature methods at a local scale; analysis and simulation of impacts of different land use scenarios on groundwater and surface water interactions at the sub-catchment scale; and the quantification of temporal and spatial groundwater and surface water interactions with hydrochemical tracers and modelling methods at the basin scale. The study found that the river flow consists of mainly groundwater discharges at all scales. The river flow regime has been intensively altered by human activities, such as the construction of reservoirs, water diversion, groundwater exploitation, and reforestation. Water use by plants and crops consumes majority of the precipitation. Groundwater sustains vegetation growth and feeds river discharges. The water resources and ecosystem management priority should reduce evaporative water uses by promoting dry resistant plant species for vegetating sand dunes and lower irrigation demand crops for socio-economic development. Furthermore, the Hailiutu River catchment must manage the groundwater recharge for water resource conservation and the maintenance of healthy ecosystems.
Fang Zhi-yang 1. 1 History of Traditional Treatment of Burns in China China is a country of ancient culture. The treatment of burn injury was documented more than 1500 years ago. As early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies written by Ge Hong (281-341 A. D. ) and in the Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502 A. D. ) Liu J uan-Zi's Remedies Left Over by Ghosts, a book dealing mainly with diagnosis and treatment of traumatic wounds, are the earliest known monographs on "external diseases" in China. They record the treatment of burns with topical agents such as the preparation of a lard ointment of the liquid extract of Angelica anomalea Lallem, Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, Radia salviae miltiorrhizae, and the white cortex of willow. These herbs are found to be astringents and antibiotics. During the Sui Dynasty, a doctor of the Imperial Medical Academy (550- 630 A. D. ), Chao Yuan-fang, was authorized by imperial decree to compile the book General Treatise on the Etiology and Symptomatology of Diseases (610 A. D. ), the first book on etiology and symptomatology in China. This book with its valuable descriptions has been an authoritative and important reference for medical students for more than 1000 years.
