Bored and frustrated in the middle of nowhere, the young soldiers resort to a macabre sense of humour as they wait for the war to happen to them.

Thomas Anders (Rupert Friend), a reporter from the USA, and his cameraman Chris Bailot (Dean Cain) become immersed in finding out what is really behind the fighting in South Ossetia. After being caught in the crossfire and witnessing executions in a small Georgian village, it becomes a race against time for the journalists to broadcast these horrific crimes to the watching world. Triple bill of World War Two dramas. 'Everyman's War' (2009) is an American drama based on the personal wartime experiences of director Thad Smith's father. Don Smith (Cole Carson), a young sergeant in the 94th Infantry Division, finds himself unarmed and wounded on the frontline of the Battle of the Bulge, the largest and bloodiest battle involving American forces in the entire war. As the Allies advance through the snow-packed, densely-forested mountains of Ardennes, Don's sweetheart Dorine (Lauren Bair) waits at home in Oregon, desperate for news. 'Anonyma: The Downfall of Berlin' (2008) is a German drama set in Berlin in the final days of the war. The events of the film are based on the real diary of an anonymous woman who lived through the liberation of Berlin by Soviet troops in 1945, suffering shockingly brutal treatment by the city's captors. Living in the basement of her bombed-out apartment building with a handful of similarly destitute neighbours, the woman - known only as 'Anonyma' (Nina Foss) - endures repeated rape by Russian soldiers, and tries to wrestle a modicum of control over her destiny by using sex as a tool for survival, forging an uneasy sexual alliance with Russian leader Major Andrei Rybkin (Yevgeni Sidikhin). Brad Haynes directs the Australian drama 'Broken Sun' (2008). In 1944, a group of Japanese soldiers held in a P.O.W. camp deep in the Australian outback make an escape attempt. One young soldier, Masaru (Shingo Usami), ends up hiding in the remote hilltop farm of reclusive farmer Jack (Jai Koutrae), a World War One veteran who never recovered from the traumas he experienced as a soldier. Despite their differences and mutual suspicions, it soon becomes evident that the two men share the understanding that war is not simply a question of good versus evil but a complex set of rules by which each of them is duty-bound to abide.

Clint Eastwood's completion of the Iwo Jima saga. Here the action is seen from the Japanese point of view and the film is based on the book 'Picture Letters from Commander in Chief' by Tadamichi Kuribayashi. The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favour the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff.

World War I action drama. Set in France during the Great War, the film follows the story of three British soldiers stranded in no man's land after a failed attack on enemy lines. Facing heavy artillery and a relentless onslaught of machine gun fire from enemy troops, the trio must struggle through the bloody wasteland to reunite with Allied forces.

Amit Gupta directs this adaptation of Owen Sheers' debut novel starring Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen. It's 1944 and D-Day has failed. The United Kingdom is now under Nazi occupation. Barry Lyndon (1975)

'Assault On the Pacific: Kamikaze' (2007) is a Japanese World War II drama about a squadron of Kamikaze pilots fighting in the Pacific. The film follows the training and final moments in the lives of the young pilots as they bid farewell to their families and girlfriends and prepare to embark on their suicidal missions against the US Navy over the Pacific Ocean.
