The acicular particle shape of Wollastonite lends itself to creating texture from ready-made paints such as Matisse background for pastels or mixing with Polymer Gloss Varnish, to create areas of texture on a canvas or painting. Mix up to 20-50% Wollastonite to gesso paint to create a superb textured surface for pastels and charcoal. Wollastonite produces a more uneven texture than Ground Quartz, therefore giving a great ground for harder pastels (use Ground Quartz for soft pastels). Wollastonite is ideal for acrylic paints due to its alkaline properties. Add varnishes and mediums to create texture in paintings on canvas.Read more about this medium in this Jackson's Art blog post.
The kit consists of two parts, a white base (primer) and the XL Crackle paste for the top layer. The primer adheres well to materials such as canvas, wood, styrofoam, plastic, glass or metal. It is not suitable for materials made of silicone. The primer adheres perfectly to the crackle paste and can be pigmented before application. The XL Crackle Paste is a structural paste for the production of cracks, which appear as the paste dries. These cracks are deeper and wider the thicker you apply the XL Crackle Paste - a layer of up to 50mm thick is possible. Paint can be sprayed or painted over the crackle paste after application - please see below for more information. Base Layer: Component 1 : Base / primer (small container). Apply the white primer paste as a base coat on your surface / substrate. Apply a thin and uniform layer. The primer adheres well to canvas, wood, styrofoam, plastic, glass or metal. It will not bond well to silicone or materials with silicone content. XL Crackle Paste: The XL Crackle Paste is a structure paste for the creation of cracks. Cracks will appear as the paste dries. The cracks will be deeper and wider the thicker you apply the XL Crackle Paste. A layer thickness up to 50 mm is possible. Adhesion of the XL paste to the Base / primer (component 1) is excellent. Optimum results are achieved at temperatures of 18–25°C. Tinting the base layer: The Base primer is white by default. When you apply the XL Crackle Paste on top, cracks will appear in the paste and the white colour of the primer will be visible underneath and show through the cracks. Use regular acrylic paint or acrylic inks as a pigment to get the colour shade you desire. Simply mix them into the Base primer by adding a maximum of 20% pigment. For example, if you need a total of 100g to prime your painting surface, you can use 80g of primer and 20g of paint (or more primer and less paint). You can introduce more flashy colours by mixing shimmering pigments into the primer or use EliGlow Photo Luminescent pigment powders to provide a radiance to your crackle art. You are limited only by your own imagination! Pigmenting the XL Crackle paste: By default the XL crackle paste is beige in colour. The paste itself cannot be coloured before application, but you can still colour your cracks afterwards. You have two options for doing this: Option A: Spray the XL Crackle Paste with spraypaint immediately after application (i.e. when still wet). The paste will break apart and as it dries and you will obtain coloured cracks. Option B: Let the XL crackle paste dry, then paint the surface as desired. You can either select individual cracks or paint the entire surface. With this technique take care not to let the paint run into the cracks otherwise you will no longer have a colour contrast

Ateliers Universal Medium is a medium and varnish rolled into one.How To Use As a MediumThere are too many mediums on offer for use with acrylics. This medium does nearly all of the techniques that you could need if you are painting in fast quick layers. However, if you want heavy impasto you will still need to use Heavy Gel or Moulding Paste.Decant some of the concentrate into a small container that you can dip your brush into. You will like the feel of the paint when the medium is added to it and you will notice that it allows you to blend and feather edges very effectively because the medium is not sticky on the brush.Small additions to thick paint will loosen the consistency while more medium creates a very attractive glazing or layering mixture which can be over painted when touch dry.How To Use As A VarnishSolvent based varnish has a strong smell because of the turps, but usually looks better than a water based one and is easy to apply. The Atelier Interactive Universal Medium/Varnish when used as a water based varnish is comparable to solvent varnish. It is very easy to apply. It gives the colour saturation and enhancement of a good solvent based varnish. By adding water to the concentrate different levels of sheen can be created between low sheen and high gloss.Artists should experiment with color swatches to decide on the finishes that they prefer.Apply a seal coat one part varnish two parts water. This allows the varnish to penetrate and seal the paint layer so that a more concentrated varnish can be spread easily when the seal coat is dry.If you want a high gloss finish the full concentrate can be used over the seal coat and two or more coats can be used to exaggerate gloss as required. For a subtle finish you might decide that the seal coat is all that you need or you might apply another diluted coat to create a satin finish which is more attractive than a satin varnish containing a flatting agent. How To ApplyPlace your painting in a sloping position so that you can pick up the runs or dribbles. You can work back and forth while the varnish is wet because it does not catch on the brush. This product is part of the Atelier Traditional range. The Atelier Traditional painting range allows you to use traditional acrylic techniques that have been evolving since 1965. The Atelier Traditional mediums are made of an acrylic binder that dries quickly and forms a tough water resistant skin. You can combine the Atelier Interactive range and Atelier Traditional range to create unique and interesting effects within the same painting.
