Materiality in Financial Reporting - An Integrative Perspective (Hardcover): Francesco Bellandi Materiality in Financial Reporting - An Integrative Perspective (Hardcover)
Francesco Bellandi
R1,843 Discovery Miles 18 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Financial reporting is a strategic means of communication: management has an opportunity to interpret, and the power to deliver, what is materially important to the organization's stakeholders. Understanding materiality means steering the company in the right direction, and many internal management battles regarding what and how to disclose in external financial reporting run on the verge of materiality. This book offers an integrated perspective of materiality from the angles of accounting (IFRS, US GAAP and SEC Rules and Regulations), auditing, internal control over financial reporting, management commentary, financial analysis, management control, forensic analysis, sustainability reporting, corporate responsibility, assurance standards, integrated reporting, and limited legal considerations. In Materiality in Financial Reporting: An Integrative Perspective, the author adopts a practical, operational approach to show how strategy, processes, and communication can be used to devise a consistent corporate governance system of materiality.

Adoption of Anglo-American models of corporate governance and financial reporting in China (Hardcover): Huiying Wu, Christopher... Adoption of Anglo-American models of corporate governance and financial reporting in China (Hardcover)
Huiying Wu, Christopher Patel
R3,479 Discovery Miles 34 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This monograph critically examines the adoption of Anglo-American models of corporate governance and financial reporting in China. More specifically, it examines whether measures taken by the Chinese government, including the adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards, the introduction of independent directors and audit committees, and the strengthening of auditor independence, are likely to improve the quality of financial reporting. A comprehensive theoretical framework based on institutional theory, which incorporates international influences, domestic influences, and intraorganizational dynamics, was developed. The findings suggest that the current institutional environment in China does not yet fully support Anglo-American practices. The implementation of internationally acceptable principles and standards is largely symbolic rather than instrumental. This monograph shows how contradictory institutional pressures shape the process and outcome of loose coupling between regulations and actual operations, which are intertwined with organizations' conflicts of interest and power dependence within China's institutional setting.

Earnings Quality - Definitions, Measures, and Financial Reporting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Elisa Menicucci Earnings Quality - Definitions, Measures, and Financial Reporting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Elisa Menicucci
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an overview of earnings quality (EQ) in the context of financial reporting and offers suggestions for defining and measuring it. Although EQ has received increasing attention from investors, creditors, regulators, and researchers in different areas, there are various definitions of it and different approaches for its measurement. The book describes the relationship between EQ and earnings management (EM) since they can be considered related challenges, especially in the context of international financial reporting standards (IAS/IFRSs). EM occurs when managers make discretionary accounting choices that are regarded as either an efficient communication of private information to improve the informativeness of a firm's current and future performance, or a distorting disclosure to mislead the firm's true performance. The intentional manipulation of earnings by managers, within the limits allowed by the accounting standards, may alter the usefulness of financial reporting and lead to lower quality of earnings. The use of fair value in financial reporting has created a current debate about the impact it might have on EQ. At times, the high subjectivity in estimating fair value can allow opportunities for the exercise of management judgments and intentional bias, which can reduce the quality of financial reporting. Management discretion can result in high EM and hence in a reduction of EQ. Particularly during difficult financial periods, managers engage in EM to mask the negative effects of the turmoil, and in such circumstances accruals and earnings smoothing are attempts to reduce abnormal variations of earnings in such circumstances. This book is a valuable resource for those interested in wider perspectives on EQ and it adds to the research studies on this topic in the context of financial reporting.

Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting (Hardcover): Cynthia Jeffrey Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting (Hardcover)
Cynthia Jeffrey
R3,658 Discovery Miles 36 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Research on Professional Responsibility and Ethics in Accounting publishes high-quality research and cases which focus on the professional responsibilities of accountants and how they deal with the ethical issues they face. Covering timely issues such as social responsibility and ethical judgement, the series brings together a range of articles exploring the professional responsibilities of accountants, codes of conduct which affect them, and securities regulations. Compliance with professional guidelines is judgement-based and the characteristics of the individual, the culture in which they operate, and situations all affect how these guidelines are interpreted and applied, as well as when they might be violated. This volume researches the nature of the interactions between accountants, regulators and standard setters, the dilemmas that occur and investigate how and why accountants resolve them.

Accounting in Latin America (Hardcover): Claudio Wanderley, Fabio Frezatti Accounting in Latin America (Hardcover)
Claudio Wanderley, Fabio Frezatti
R3,650 Discovery Miles 36 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Latin America consists of a diverse set of countries that nonetheless face common political, economic and social problems; in particular, high inequality and volatile growth which have contributed to high levels of poverty. However, since the 2000s, most countries in Latin America have reduced inflation, brought external debts under control and improved on most of the key economic and social performance indexes. These structural changes have attracted the attention of external investors, as well as large international audiences. With countries such as Mexico and Brazil becoming political and economic power houses, the Latin American region is set to play an important role in the global economy. Yet, international research communities currently lack a systematic understanding of Latin American accounting issues, in spite of a vibrant and growing accounting literature emanating from Latin American researchers. We aim with this volume to offer to the external audiences a sample of the research conducted in Latin American countries ranging from issues of financial and management Accounting, which can further theirs understanding of accounting issues in Latin America.

Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting (Paperback): Charl Villiers, Warren Maroun Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting (Paperback)
Charl Villiers, Warren Maroun
R1,284 Discovery Miles 12 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting deals with organizations' assessment, articulation and disclosure of their social and environmental impact on various groups in society. There is increasingly an understanding that financial information does not sufficiently discharge organizational accountability to members of society who are demanding an account of the social and environmental impacts of companies' and other organizations' activities. As a result, organizations report ever more social and environmental information, and there are simultaneous movements towards providing the information in an integrated fashion, showing how social and environmental activities influence each other, members of society and the financial aims of the organization. The book Sustainability Accounting and Integrated Reporting provides a broad and comprehensive review of the field, focusing on the interconnection between different elements of these topics, often dealt with in isolation. The book examines the accounting involved in the collection and analysis of data, control processes over the data, how information is reported to external parties, and the assurance of the information being reported. The book thereby provides an overview useful to practitioners (including sustainability managers, consultants, members of the accounting profession, and other assurance providers), academics, and students.

Multinational Financial Management (Paperback, 11th Revised edition): Alan C. Shapiro, Paul Hanouna Multinational Financial Management (Paperback, 11th Revised edition)
Alan C. Shapiro, Paul Hanouna
R5,599 Discovery Miles 55 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The eleventh edition of Multinational Financial Management is a comprehensive survey of the essential areas of the international financial market environment, including foreign exchange and derivative markets, risk management, and international capital markets and portfolio investment. Designed for upper-level undergraduate and masters-level courses in international finance and management, this textbook offers readers a conceptual framework for analyzing key financial decisions of multinational firms. The authors both explain and simplify multinational financial management by illustrating how its basic principles share the same foundation as domestic corporate finance. Assuming no prior knowledge of international economics or finance, this substantially revised new edition builds upon the fundamental principles of domestic financial management to examine the unique dimensions of international finance. Readers are presented with a solid theoretical knowledgebase for examining decision problems, as well as practical analytical techniques that clarify the often-ambiguous guidelines used by international financial executives. All the traditional areas of corporate finance are explored from the perspective of a multinational corporation, focusing on elements rarely encountered in domestic finance such as multiple currencies, segmented capital markets, and political risks of nationalization or expropriation.

Financial Microeconometrics - A Research Methodology in Corporate Finance and Accounting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Marek... Financial Microeconometrics - A Research Methodology in Corporate Finance and Accounting (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Marek Gruszczynski
R3,481 Discovery Miles 34 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores new topics in modern research on empirical corporate finance and applied accounting, especially the econometric analysis of microdata. Dubbed "financial microeconometrics" by the author, this concept unites both methodological and applied approaches. The book examines how quantitative methods can be applied in corporate finance and accounting research in order to predict companies getting into financial distress. Presented in a clear and straightforward manner, it also suggests methods for linking corporate governance to financial performance, and discusses what the determinants of accounting disclosures are. Exploring these questions by way of numerous practical examples, this book is intended for researchers, practitioners and students who are not yet familiar with the variety of approaches available for data analysis and microeconometrics. "This book on financial microeconometrics is an excellent starting point for research in corporate finance and accounting. In my view, the text is positioned between a narrative and a scientific treatise. It is based on a vast amount of literature but is not overloaded with formulae. My appreciation of financial microeconometrics has very much increased. The book is well organized and properly written. I enjoyed reading it." Wolfgang Marty, Senior Investment Strategist, AgaNola AG

Digital Transformation and Public Services - Societal Impacts in Sweden and Beyond (Hardcover): Anthony Larsson, Robin Teigland Digital Transformation and Public Services - Societal Impacts in Sweden and Beyond (Hardcover)
Anthony Larsson, Robin Teigland
R4,154 Discovery Miles 41 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through a series of studies, the overarching aim of this book is to investigate if and how the digitalization/digital transformation process affects various welfare services provided by the public sector, and the ensuing implications thereof. Ultimately, this book seeks to understand if it is conceivable for digital advancement to result in the creation of private/non-governmental alternatives to welfare services, possibly in a manner that transcends national boundaries. This study also investigates the possible ramifications of technological development for the public sector and the Western welfare society at large. This book takes its point of departure from the 2016 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report that targets specific public service areas in which government needs to adopt new strategies not to fall behind. Specifically, this report emphasizes the focus on digitalization of health care/social care, education, and protection services, including the use of assistive technologies referred to as "digital welfare." Hence, this book explores the factors potentially leading to whether state actors could be overrun by other non-governmental actors, disrupting the current status quo of welfare services. The book seeks to provide an innovative, enriching, and controversial take on society at large and how various aspects of the public sector can be, and are, affected by the ongoing digitalization process in a way that is not covered by extant literature on the market. This book takes its point of departure in Sweden given the fact that Sweden is one of the most digitalized countries in Europe, according to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), making it a pertinent research case. However, as digitalization transcends national borders, large parts of the subject matter take on an international angle. This includes cases from several other countries around Europe as well as the United States.

Accounting Control and Controlling Accounting - Interdisciplinary and Critical Perspectives (Paperback, New): Jane Broadbent,... Accounting Control and Controlling Accounting - Interdisciplinary and Critical Perspectives (Paperback, New)
Jane Broadbent, Richard Laughlin
R3,763 Discovery Miles 37 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book advocates and illustrates the power of Interdisciplinary & Critical Perspectives, drawn from a range of social sciences, to critically analyse accounting processes & practices. Its particular focus is the extensive forms of societal regulations & requirements that are made over organisations, particularly public sector organisations, that are driven by forms of accounting, collectively described as Accounting Control in the book. These regulations & requirements are deeply resented by these public sector organisations and, as a result, all manner of resistance strategies are adopted, which are described as Controlling Accounting in the book. The book is primarily conceptual but, given the particular Interdisciplinary & Critical research approach adopted, relies heavily on drawing from empirical cases to develop the conceptual ideas. The book, therefore, analyses actual public sector Accounting Control & Controlling Accounting strategies and counter-strategies primarily, but not exclusively, from the United Kingdom, to develop the conceptual ideas. The book ends with a critical analysis of the forces & counter-forces of Accounting Control & Controlling Accounting.
