Overcoming Addiction - Seven Imperfect Solutions and the End of America's Greatest Epidemic (Hardcover): Gregory E. Pence Overcoming Addiction - Seven Imperfect Solutions and the End of America's Greatest Epidemic (Hardcover)
Gregory E. Pence
R952 Discovery Miles 9 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With an estimated 20 million people addicted to drugs or alcohol, America is in the grip of an unrivaled epidemic. Overcoming Addition reveals how seemingly contradictory treatment theories must come together to understand and end dangerous substance abuse. Addiction treatment has become a billion-dollar industry based on innumerable clinical and psychological perspectives. Zealous clinicians and researchers have gathered around the theories, proclaiming each as the sole truth and excluding alternate views. In this book, leading bioethicist Gregory Pence demystifies seven foundational theories of addiction and addiction treatment. From Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous to methadone clinics and brain chemistry studies, each method holds foundation beliefs about human nature, free will, and biology. Understanding the diversity of these theories allows us to build a framework for more effective treatment for all addiction types. For individuals suffering from addiction, their families, and those who devote their lives to ending addiction's grasp on our society, this book offers a fresh perspective and a framework for long-term solutions.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are common among many patients with medical and psychiatric disorders. Professionals from all medical and behavioral health disciplines must address SUDs to provide optimal care to patients. Failure to do so may contribute to morbidity and mortality in cases of more severe substance dependence.
This new volume in the Pittsburgh Pocket Psychiatry series provides a comprehensive overview of substance use disorders for medical students and psychiatric residents. It is aimed particularly at increasing student's knowledge and skills in addressing SUDs. The handy pocket-sized book focuses on those substances used, abused and leading to addiction and the clinical implications of SUDs. Epidemiology, etiology, classifications of SUDs, screening and assessment, and pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions are discussed alongside case histories illustrating the material covered. Questions for the reader stimulate thinking about specific cases and how the medical student or resident can help patients with SUDs.
Additional chapters focus on problems caused or worsened by SUDs such as Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Relapse and recovery are also explored given many patients with substance dependence relapse. Adolescents with SUDs, prevention and harm reduction interventions are also reviewed.
The concept of rom SUDs is incorporated in many of the chapters. Medical, psychological, family and cultural aspects of addiction and recovery are addressed, providing the reader with a broad framework for understanding and helping patients with SUDs, as well as their families. An extensive list of online resources is provided that includes mutual support programs as well as professionals and organizations who offer helpful materials and programs for patients with SUDs.
Contributing authors represent medicine, psychiatry, social work, psychology in diverse treatment settings. Many authors are also researchers and all are educators involved in mentoring medical students, residents, fellows and other health care professionals.

Peter Boyle, Paolo Boffetta, Albert B. Lowenfels, Harry Burns, Otis Brawley, …
R4,212 Discovery Miles 42 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Alcohol has always been an issue in public health but it is currently assuming increasing importance as a cause of disease and premature death worldwide. Alcohol: Science, Policy, and Public Health provides an interdisciplinary source of information that links together, the usually separate fields of, science, policy, and public health. This comprehensive volume highlights the importance of bringing scientific knowledge to bear in order to strengthen and develop alcohol public policy. The book looks at the historical evolution of alcohol consumption in society, key early studies of alcohol and disease, and the cultural and social aspects of alcohol consumption. It then goes on to cover the chemistry and biology of alcohol, patterns of consumption, gender and age-related issues, alcohol and injury, alcohol and cancer and non-malignant disease, and various current therapeutic aspects. The book concludes with a section on alcohol policy, looking at issues of poverty, the availability of alcohol and alcohol control measures. This major reference, written by international leaders in the fields of alcoholism and alcohol policy, provides a comprehensive study of one of the foremost health problems in the world, and represents the highest standards of research within the field. It will be valuable to physicians and health professionals involved with patients with alcohol-related problems, scientists, public health specialists, health policy specialists, researchers and legislators as well as students of public health.

Addressing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Richard Saitz Addressing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Richard Saitz
R2,748 Discovery Miles 27 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While there is a wealth of published information on addiction medicine, the psychological aspects of alcohol abuse, and behavioral medicine with regard to addiction, virtually none of these resources were written with the primary care provider in mind. Addressing Unhealthy Alcohol Use in Primary Care is a resource for primary care clinicians who are confronted by patients with these problems daily, and who wish to successfully address these issues in their practice. It would focus on the literature and science relevant to primary care practice and cover the range of interventions appropriate for this setting. Topics include assessment, brief counseling interventions, pharmacotherapy, referrals to both specialty care and Alcoholics Anonymous (and other self-help programs), psychiatric co-morbidity and other drug use, and other information specific to the needs of the primary care provider.

The book considers topics such as early trauma and its impacts, therapeutic methods based on images and narrative, and recovery and post-traumatic growth through community engagement. While there have always been norms and customs around the use of drugs, explicit public policies--regulations, taxes, and prohibitions--designed to control drug abuse are a more recent phenomenon. Those policies sometimes have terrible side-effects: most prominently the development of criminal enterprises dealing in forbidden (or untaxed) drugs and the use of the profits of drug-dealing to finance insurgency and terrorism. Neither a drug-free world nor a world of free drugs seems to be on offer, leaving citizens and officials to face the age-old problem: What are we going to do about drugs?
In Drugs and Drug Policy, three noted authorities survey the subject with exceptional clarity, in this addition to the acclaimed series, What Everyone Needs to Know(r). They begin, by defining "drugs," examining how they work in the brain, discussing the nature of addiction, and exploring the damage they do to users. The book moves on to policy, answering questions about legalization, the role of criminal prohibitions, and the relative legal tolerance for alcohol and tobacco. The authors then dissect the illicit trade, from street dealers to the flow of money to the effect of catching kingpins, and show the precise nature of the relationship between drugs and crime. They examine treatment, both its effectiveness and the role of public policy, and discuss the beneficial effects of some abusable substances. Finally they move outward to look at the role of drugs in our foreign policy, their relationship to terrorism, and the ugly politics that surround the issue.
Crisp, clear, and comprehensive, this is a handy and up-to-date overview of one of the most pressing topics in today's world.

Overcoming Alcohol Use Problems: Therapist Guide - A cognitive-behavioural treatment program (Paperback): Elizabeth E. Epstein,... Overcoming Alcohol Use Problems: Therapist Guide - A cognitive-behavioural treatment program (Paperback)
Elizabeth E. Epstein, Barbara S. McCrady
R1,640 Discovery Miles 16 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is well-known that alcohol abuse can have a devastating effect on a person's entire life, from work to social life to family relationships. However, men and women experience substance abuse problems in different ways. Most of the literature currently on the market does not make this distinction, and treats men's and women's problems as identical. This treatment program acknowledges the differences between the two, and presents gender-specific options for each step of the treatment. Publication of this manual represents an important new step in understanding and treating alcohol abuse. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been proven to be an extremely effective method of treatment for alcohol abuse. This treatment program uses new research by the authors that include a female-specific study as well as generalised treatment for individuals. Gender-specific topics addressed include assertiveness training, coping with other drinkers in one's social network, recognising anxiety or depression as triggers for alcohol abuse, and anger management. Like all Treatments That Work books, this treatment is completely evidence-based. The 12-week program is outlined session by session in this easy-to-follow Therapist Guide.

High - Drugs, Desire, and a Nation of Users (Paperback): Ingrid Walker High - Drugs, Desire, and a Nation of Users (Paperback)
Ingrid Walker
R859 Discovery Miles 8 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Whether drinking Red Bull, relieving chronic pain with oxycodone, or experimenting with Ecstasy, Americans participate in a culture of self-medication, using psychoactive substances to enhance or manage our moods. A "drug-free America" seems to be a fantasyland that most people don't want to inhabit. High: Drugs, Desire, and a Nation of Users asks fundamental questions about US drug policies and social norms. Why do we endorse the use of some drugs and criminalize others? Why do we accept the necessity of a doctor-prescribed opiate but not the same thing bought off the street? This divided approach shapes public policy, the justice system, research, social services, and health care. And despite the decades-old war on drugs, drug use remains relatively unchanged. Ingrid Walker speaks to the silencing effects of both criminalization and medicalization, incorporating first-person narratives to show a wide variety of user experiences with drugs. By challenging current thinking about drugs and users, Walker calls for a next wave of drug policy reform in the United States, beginning with recognizing the full spectrum of drug use practices.

The media goes wild when politicians and celebrities being caught "cheating" on their spouses are exposed in public. Most of these types of stories focus on the person doing the "cheating," not the partner who is left behind. After the media spotlight cools down, what happens to these partners? How do they make the decision to stay or go? Is there really any hope for the future of the relationship? How do they survive the shame and move forward? "Mending A Shattered Heart" provides real hope, promise and inspiration to readers who are struggling.
Anyone who has discovered their loved one, the one person that they are supposed to trust completely, has been cheating on them will want to read this book. Readers have an opportunity to explore whether the person they are in a relationship with is simply behaving badly or truly suffers from a disease called sex addiction. Knowing the difference and knowing what to do about it can be transformational.
Author and editor, Stefanie Carnes brings together several leading experts in the field of sex addiction and family therapy to guide the reader through an assortment of difficult questions, including, Should I stay or should I go?, How Do I Set Boundaries and Keep Myself Safe?, What Does It Mean if My Partner Has Shown an Interest in Minors? and "What should I tell the kids?" Each of these topics are tackled in individual chapters producing a comprehensive guide that offers readers expertise on how to begin the painful road of mending a shattered heart.
What is unique about "Mending A Shattered Heart" is that it offers such inspiration and promise for the partner of a sex addict. It shows the seriousness of sex addiction and offers hope by showing that treatment can be successful, but hard work needs to be done--by both the partner and the addict. Without partners really examining their relationship with the sex addict, they can find themselves in a spiral of devastating relationships, essentially leaving the relationship and then falling in love with the same type of person over and over again with the same disastrous results. "Mending A Shattered Heart" shows the reader that they do have options. Even if the partner makes the decision to leave the relationship, there are things they can do to help them in their own recovery and make sure this never happens again. If they choose to stay in the relationship, they can work toward repairing the damaged relationship along with their own recovery.
All the material in "Mending A Shattered Heart" is provided in a question and answer format that delves into essential information including therapeutic and practical information that the partner can use right away. This second edition of the book includes a new focus on the impact of the trauma when a partner discovers his or her partner is cheating and what to do about it.
