The culinary history of Georgetown and Horry Counties reflects a
unique merging of Native American, European, African and Caribbean
cuisines. Learn how slaves taught their masters to create vast
wealth on rice plantations, what George Washington likely ate when
visiting South Carolina in 1791, how the turpentine industry gave
rise to a sticky sweet potato cooking method and why locals eagerly
anticipate one special time of year when boiled peanuts are at
their best. Author Becky Billingsley, a longtime Myrtle Beach-area
restaurant journalist, digs deep into historic records, serves up
tantalizing personal interviews and dishes on the best local
restaurants, where many delicious farm-to-table heritage foods can
still be enjoyed.

At the turn of the 20th century, the neighborhood known as Jackson
Heights was originally called Trains Meadow, a sprawling area
covered by acres of farmland and rolling hills. Its only
inhabitants were homesteaders who lived in their ancient
wood-framed dwellings with spreads occupied by barns, horse
stables, cabbage patches, and beehives. Overgrowing populations in
Manhattan and Brooklyn led developers to Queens County to transform
that landscape into Jackson Heights. Headed by Edward Archibald
MacDougall, the ambitious Queensboro Corporation spent nearly $4
million buying properties, molding roads, and constructing
buildings of great architectural merit. Jackson Heights provides an
in-depth look at the history of America's first garden apartment
community with the use of never-before-seen photographs culled from
local archives and private collections. Images featured show the
neighborhood's progression from rural farmland to the highly
populated economic center it is today with memorable businesses
like Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor and the cultural splendor along
Thirty-seventh Avenue and Eighty-second Street.
The New Castle County Police Department has provided over a century
of service to a county that continues to grow. In February 1913,
two men were duly appointed and became the driving force of the New
Castle County Rural Police. By the early 1930s, this small team
evolved into an efficient police force. Today, the department has
grown to be one of the top law enforcement agencies in the country
and is comprised of approximately 350 law enforcement officers.
Members of the New Castle County Police Department have displayed
tremendous courage and sacrifice in the line of duty. The dedicated
men and women of the force continue to provide a positive and
invaluable service to the diverse communities of New Castle County.
