Laboratory Experiments in Information Retrieval - Sample Sizes, Effect Sizes, and Statistical Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... Laboratory Experiments in Information Retrieval - Sample Sizes, Effect Sizes, and Statistical Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Tetsuya Sakai
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Covering aspects from principles and limitations of statistical significance tests to topic set size design and power analysis, this book guides readers to statistically well-designed experiments. Although classical statistical significance tests are to some extent useful in information retrieval (IR) evaluation, they can harm research unless they are used appropriately with the right sample sizes and statistical power and unless the test results are reported properly. The first half of the book is mainly targeted at undergraduate students, and the second half is suitable for graduate students and researchers who regularly conduct laboratory experiments in IR, natural language processing, recommendations, and related fields.Chapters 1-5 review parametric significance tests for comparing system means, namely, t-tests and ANOVAs, and show how easily they can be conducted using Microsoft Excel or R. These chapters also discuss a few multiple comparison procedures for researchers who are interested in comparing every system pair, including a randomised version of Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference test. The chapters then deal with known limitations of classical significance testing and provide practical guidelines for reporting research results regarding comparison of means. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss statistical power. Chapter 6 introduces topic set size design to enable test collection builders to determine an appropriate number of topics to create. Readers can easily use the author's Excel tools for topic set size design based on the paired and two-sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and confidence intervals. Chapter 7 describes power-analysis-based methods for determining an appropriate sample size for a new experiment based on a similar experiment done in the past, detailing how to utilize the author's R tools for power analysis and how to interpret the results. Case studies from IR for both Excel-based topic set size design and R-based power analysis are also provided.

Intelligent Data Analysis - Developing New Methodologies Through Pattern Discovery and Recovery (Hardcover): Hsiao-Fan Wang Intelligent Data Analysis - Developing New Methodologies Through Pattern Discovery and Recovery (Hardcover)
Hsiao-Fan Wang
R4,978 Discovery Miles 49 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Pattern Recognition has a long history of applications to data analysis in business, military and social economic activities. While the aim of pattern recognition is to discover the pattern of a data set, the size of the data set is closely related to the methodology one adopts for analysis. Intelligent Data Analysis: Developing New Methodologies Through Pattern Discovery and Recovery tackles those data sets and covers a variety of issues in relation to intelligent data analysis so that patterns from frequent or rare events in spatial or temporal spaces can be revealed. This book brings together current research, results, problems, and applications from both theoretical and practical approaches.

Evolutionary Computation and Complex Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Jing Liu, Hussein A. Abbass, Kay Chen Tan Evolutionary Computation and Complex Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Jing Liu, Hussein A. Abbass, Kay Chen Tan
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book introduces the linkage between evolutionary computation and complex networks and the advantages of cross-fertilising ideas from both fields. Instead of introducing each field individually, the authors focus on the research that sits at the interface of both fields. The book is structured to address two questions: (1) how complex networks are used to analyze and improve the performance of evolutionary computation methods? (2) how evolutionary computation methods are used to solve problems in complex networks? The authors interweave complex networks and evolutionary computing, using evolutionary computation to discover community structure, while also using network analysis techniques to analyze the performance of evolutionary algorithms. The book is suitable for both beginners and senior researchers in the fields of evolutionary computation and complex networks.

Computational Phonogram Archiving (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Rolf Bader Computational Phonogram Archiving (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Rolf Bader
R2,924 Discovery Miles 29 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The future of music archiving and search engines lies in deep learning and big data. Music information retrieval algorithms automatically analyze musical features like timbre, melody, rhythm or musical form, and artificial intelligence then sorts and relates these features. At the first International Symposium on Computational Ethnomusicological Archiving held on November 9 to 11, 2017 at the Institute of Systematic Musicology in Hamburg, Germany, a new Computational Phonogram Archiving standard was discussed as an interdisciplinary approach. Ethnomusicologists, music and computer scientists, systematic musicologists as well as music archivists, composers and musicians presented tools, methods and platforms and shared fieldwork and archiving experiences in the fields of musical acoustics, informatics, music theory as well as on music storage, reproduction and metadata. The Computational Phonogram Archiving standard is also in high demand in the music market as a search engine for music consumers. This book offers a comprehensive overview of the field written by leading researchers around the globe.

Computations and Computing Devices in Mathematics Education Before the Advent of Electronic Calculators (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Computations and Computing Devices in Mathematics Education Before the Advent of Electronic Calculators (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Alexei Volkov, Viktor Freiman
R4,432 Discovery Miles 44 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume traces back the history of interaction between the "computational" or "algorithmic" aspects of elementary mathematics and mathematics education throughout ages. More specifically, the examples of mathematical practices analyzed by the historians of mathematics and mathematics education who authored the chapters in the present collection show that the development (and, in some cases, decline) of counting devices and related computational practices needs to be considered within a particular context to which they arguably belonged, namely, the context of mathematics instruction; in their contributions the authors also explore the role that the instruments played in formation of didactical approaches in various mathematical traditions, stretching from Ancient Mesopotamia to the 20th century Europe and North America.

Multi-UAS Minimum Time Search in Dynamic and Uncertain Environments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Sara Perez Carabaza Multi-UAS Minimum Time Search in Dynamic and Uncertain Environments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Sara Perez Carabaza
R5,090 Discovery Miles 50 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book proposes some novel approaches for finding unmanned aerial vehicle trajectories to reach targets with unknown location in minimum time. At first, it reviews probabilistic search algorithms that have been used for dealing with the minimum time search (MTS) problem, and discusses how metaheuristics, and in particular the ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO), can help to find high-quality solutions with low computational time. Then, it describes two ACO-based approaches to solve the discrete MTS problem and the continuous MTS problem, respectively. In turn, it reports on the evaluation of the ACO-based discrete and continuous approaches to the MTS problem in different simulated scenarios, showing that the methods outperform in most all the cases over other state-of-the-art approaches. In the last part of the thesis, the work of integration of the proposed techniques in the ground control station developed by Airbus to control ATLANTE UAV is reported in detail, providing practical insights into the implementation of these methods for real UAVs.
