However, when Sookee and Hideko begin to develop unexpected emotions for each other, they start putting together a plan of their own. With breathtaking visuals, grandiose set design and frenzied humour, The Handmaiden is one of the year’s most anticipated films - an opulent and labyrinthine tale of deception, romance and triple-crossing that marks a career high for one of modern cinema’s most thrilling auteurs. A hilarious comedy from the director of Life is a Miracle, Emir Kusturica’s Black Cat White Cat is a riotous mix of farce, romance and crime. Set within a community of gypsies, it tells a story of dodgy deals, family ties, young love and magical occurences. Zare is a young man in love with the beautiful Ida, but his crooked father, having botched up a black market deal, intends to marry him off to the sister of a powerful gangster - a woman so tiny that her nickname is Ladybird. Set on the banks of the Danube, this colourful comedy is crammed with spectacle, incident and the music of Emir Kusturica’s famous travelling gypsy band. In Serbo-Croat with English subtitles.
On a busy Paris boulevard, a youth scornfully tosses a crumpled paper bag into the outstretched hands of a beggar woman. This is the bond which, for an instant, links several very different characters: Anne, an actress; her war photo- grapher boyfriend Georges; his farmer father and younger brother Jean, who, contrary to his father's wishes, has no interest in inheriting the farm; Amandou, a music teacher for deaf-mute children, and his family, who originate from Africa; and Maria a Romanian immigrant. Written and directed by Michael Haneke, one of modern cinema's most distinctive and ambitious directors, Code Unknown is a complex film of powerful emotional force and a fascinating study of the subtle connections and barriers between people, social class, race, and the difficulty of communicating in the modern world. In French with English subtitles.

Triple bill of movies from the cult French directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. In 'Delicatessen' (1990), in a burnt-out city on the verge of collapse, a canny butcher (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) employs various young handymen, kills them, and then sells them as meat. When ex-circus performer Louison (Dominique Pinon) arrives looking for work, it seems that his head will be the next on the block. But Louison falls in love with Julie (Marie-Laure Dougnac), the butcher's daughter, and together they join forces with an underground vegetarian group who plan to bring an end to the butcher's cruel regime. 'The City of Lost Children' (1995) is set on a futuristic oil rig, where a man, Krank (Daniel Emilfork), has aged prematurely because he has lost the ability to dream. To reverse the ageing process he kidnaps children from the local harbour town so that he can steal their dreams. Finally, 'The Bunker of the Last Gunshots' (1981) is a short film about a group of soldiers living in a bleak futuristic world.
Carlos Saura's exquisite Cria Cuervos...heralded a turning point in Spain: Shot while General Franco was on his deathbed, the film melds the personal and the political in a portrait of the legacy of fascism and its effects on a middle-class family (the title derives from the Spanish proverb: "Raise ravens and they'll peck out your eyes"). Ana Torrent(the dark-eyed beauty from The Spirit of the Beehive) portrays the disturbed eight-year-old Ana, living in Madrid with her two sisters and mourning the death of her mother, whom she conjures as a ghost (played by an ethereal Geraldine Chaplin). Seamlessly shifting between fantasy and reality, the film subtly evokes both the complex feelings of childhood and the struggles of a nation emerging from the shadows.
The danceable sound of El Gringo de la Bachata has garnered him a following in his native Dominican Republic and abroad, winning the hearts of many with the Bachata's traditional tales of melancholy and heartbreak. Here, audiences are taken backstage to meet those who populate the artist's world, and are treated as well to live concert footage featuring such songs as "Se Me Quedo tu Nombre" and "Gringo Muere de Dolor."
Sebastián Lelio returns with a groundbreaking, deeply humane and Academy Award-winning story about a transgender woman’s fight for acceptance. Anchored by a powerhouse central performance from rising star Daniela Vega, this Oscar-winning film is an urgent call for compassion towards a community that faces bigotry and hostility on a daily basis. Vega plays Marina Vidal, a young singer whose life is thrown into turmoil following the sudden death of her partner, Orlando. Met with suspicion from the police and contempt from her lover’s relatives, Marina finds herself placed under intense scrutiny, with no regard for her privacy, or her grief. As tensions rise between Marina and Orlando’s family, she is evicted from their shared home and banned from attending his funeral. But faced with the threat of losing everything, Marina finds the strength to fight back. From the producers of Jackie, Spotlight and Toni Erdmann, A Fantastic Woman is an outstanding, timely work that recalls the very best films of Pedro Almodóvar. Soaked in luminous visuals and elevated by elegant flights of surrealism, it is a courageous, audacious and defiant declaration of Marina’s status as a woman – and a fantastic one, at that. (Academy Award winner for: Best Foreign Language Film)
