The Book of Judith contains a veritable wealth of intertextual references. Models for the figure of Judith were not just provided by Moses, David and Judas Maccabeus, but also by biblical female figures who were either the victims or themselves the perpetrators of violence. The study is centred on the song in Judith 16, 1-17, which provides a theological interpretation of the events in the Book of Judith and puts forward the statement that God crushes wars. In the intertextual biblical dialogue, the Book of Judith is read as a plea for resistance to a violent regime, not with warlike means but through the strategic deployment of female beauty.
The so-called "Antioch Incident"--the confrontation between the apostles Peter and Paul recorded in Galatians 2.11-21--continues to be a source of controversy in scholarly as well as popular estimations of the emerging early church. This innovative interpretation of the event argues that the central issue at stake in Antioch--whether the Torah or Jesus Christ determines who are the people of God--gains great clarity and force when viewed in relation to a form of Judaism knows as Maccabean martyr theology.

Not only does he pay careful heed to the women of the Gospels, he also seeks to enter into the minds of those 'on the other side' in material written from the perspective of Pilate, 'the Jews' and someone who is fighting against the uncomfortable truths of Good Friday.

"Robert H. Stein has composed an excellent commentary on Mark 1: 1-16: 8. He explains well the purpose and structure of the Gospel, discusses in detail its problematic verses, judiciously selects views of other commentators, and explains why he thinks the Gospel ends at 16: 8. Hence Stein's commentary will be a precious "vade mecum" for pastors and preachers, students of the New Testament, and teachers in biblical studies."--Joseph A. Fitzmyer, SJ, professor emeritus, biblical studies, Catholic University o America, Washington, DC "Bob Stein has written a great commentary on the Gospel of Mark. It is rich with interpretive insight, yet it is very reader friendly. Scholars, pastors, students, and lay readers will appreciate how Stein tackles difficult questions head-on and presents sensible solutions. Reading this commentary gives the reader a real sense of what the evangelist Mark was trying to say and how his original readers would have understood him. It makes an excellent contribution to the BECNT series."--Craig A. Evans, Payzant Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Acadia Divinity College, Nova Scotia "This comprehensive commentary is the seasoned work of a first-rate, evangelical scholar. The discussions are well informed, and the positions taken are judicious and fair. Anyone working on the Second Gospel will find significant help here, particularly with regard to the theology and purpose of the evangelist."--Klyne Snodgrass, Paul W. Brandel Professor of New Testament Studies, North Park Theological Seminary
Shortly before his death in 1577, the Mantuan Jewish scholar Azariah de' Rossi wrote a challenging and provocative treatise in Italian. Addressing a Christian readership at a time when the authenticity and authority of the Vulgate had been called into question, de' Rossi presented critical readings of specific verses and phrases in the New Testament, particularly the Aramaisms, clarifying and emending the Vulgate on the basis of the ancient Syriac version which had recently been printed (Vienna, 1555). Few Western scholars had any familiarity with Syriac; this learned Jew's contribution to New Testament studies thus appears all the more remarkable. De' Rossi's work was commissioned by Giacomo Boncompagni, the son of Pope Gregory XIII, and dedicated to the cardinal Santa Severina, Giulio Antonio Sanotoro.

After the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem, the Jews
were exiled to Babylon. Not only was there no longer a physical
place to pray, even the sacred Scriptures were becoming scarce.
Many of the biblical scrolls were lost or destroyed during the
exile. In an attempt to preserve the Scriptures, the Rabbis divided
up the biblical texts into weekly reading portions and distributed
them among the families of Israel. Each was responsible for
memorizing their assigned passage and then reading it in the
synagogue every Sabbath.
What was Jesus of Nazareth really like? What effect did he have on those he met and befriended? How did he impart his teachings and perform his miracles? These are the questions that James Harpur explores through Joseph of Arimathea, one of the most enigmatic characters of the gospel. After the crucifixion, Joseph embarks on a quest to find out who Jesus really was, seeking out those who knew him personally. These witnesses, all mentioned in the gospels, tell their stories, each contributing a unique insight into the Nazarene.
