This series provides an ideal platform to study chess openings. By
continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions
throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the
learning and practicing of vital skills just as much as the
traditional assimilation of opening knowledge. Carefully selected
questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved
and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an
excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time
improve your general chess skills and knowledge. The Petroff
Defense is a solid and reliable way to meet 1 e4. It has a strong
reputation and has been employed regularly by many grandmasters,
most notably former world champions Anatoly Karpov and Vladimir
Kramnik. By choosing counterattack instead of defense as early as
the second move, Black immediately avoids many favorite weapons for
White, including the Ruy Lopez, Italian Game, Scotch Game and a
number of daunting gambits. This practical advantage for those
playing Black in the Open Games cannot be underestimated. In this
book, International Master Cyrus Lakdawala invites you to join him
in studying all the important lines in the Petroff. Using
illustrative games, he explains the main positional and tactical
ideas for both sides, provides answers to all the key questions and
tells you everything you need to know about successfully playing
the Petroff Defense. *Essential guidance and training with the
Petroff *Provides repertoire options for Black *Utilizes an ideal

The Queen's Gambit Declined is an opening of great historical
importance and Black's fundamental answer to 1 d4. From the very
first move Black obtains a firm foothold in the centre, something
that White finds extremely hard to undermine. Indeed, Black often
bases his entire strategy around this control. The soundness of the
Queen's Gambit Declined has never been in question, and its
supporters at the highest level include a long list of Grandmasters
headed by Kasparov, Kramnik, Karpov and Short, as well as many
World Champions from the past.
This book is a further addition to Everyman's best-selling
"Starting Out" series, which has been acclaimed for its original
approach to tackling chess openings. Neil McDonald goes back to the
basics of the Queen's Gambit Declined, introducing the key moves
and ideas, and taking care to explain the reasoning behind them -
something that is often neglected or taken for granted in other
texts. In this user-friendly guide, the reader is helped throughout
by an abundance of notes, tips and warnings highlighting the vital
characteristics of the Queen's Gambit Declined and of opening play
in general. "Starting Out: Queen's Gambit Declined "is a perfect
guide for improving players or for those new to this opening.

The Sicilian Defense is an opening that commences with the moves
1.e4 c5. The Sicilian Defense is the most popular and best-scoring
response to White's first move 1.e4. For example, 1.d4, is a
statistically more successful opening for White because of the high
success rate of the Sicilian Defense against 1.e4. The Sicilian is
Black's most dynamic, asymmetrical reply to 1.P-K4. It produces the
psychological and tension factors which denote the best in modern
play and gives notice of a fierce fight on the very first move.'
The Modernized Grivas Sicilian is an unique variation within the
Sicilian developed by Grandmaster Grivas, the reason why it has his
name.
Anatoly Karpov is considered by many to be one of the greatest
chess players of all time. He was the undisputed World Champion
from 1975 to 1985, and also FIDE World Champion from 1993 to 1999.
He was ranked the World's number one player for 90 months - second
only to his greatest rival Garry Kasparov - and he won well over a
hundred elite tournaments. Karpov possessed a deep positional
understanding of the game and a fabulous intuitive feel for
positions. His boa-constrictor style left many opponents wondering
where exactly they went wrong. In this book, International Master
Sam Collins selects and examines his favorite Karpov games, and
shows us how we can all learn and improve our chess by studying
Karpov's play. Move by Move provides an ideal platform to study
chess. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing
questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly
encourages the learning and practicing of vital skills just as much
as the traditional assimilation of knowledge. Carefully selected
questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved
and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an
excellent way to improve your chess skills and knowledge. *Learn

By going through the chapters, you will get acquainted with my way
of grandmaster type thinking. I can assure you of one thing: there
are better and weaker grandmasters, but you won't find a GM who is
playing without ideas or, let's say, without his way of thinking!
As you will find out, I am basically trying to detect the problem
or goal of the position and then I am starting to scan factors
which can lead to the solution. That process you will find in many
examples in the book. GM Alojzije Jankovic, April 2020.
The Grunfeld is an exciting and dynamic answer to 1 d4, and has
become very popular at all levels of chess. A major reason for this
is that it has been a long-time favourite of the World's
strongest-ever chess player, Garry Kasparov, who used it many times
in his numerous World Championship battles. The Grunfeld very much
relies on the principles of the hypermodern school of chess: Black
allows White to erect an impressive-looking centre on the
assumption that in the long run it could prove to be more of a
liability than an asset. Play often becomes very complex and
tactical, one of the reasons the Grunfeld appeals to ambitious
players.
Despite its attractions, some prospective Grunfeld players are
discouraged by the necessity of needing to learn numerous different
variations in such a complex opening. In "Play the Grunfeld,"
however," "opening expert Yelena Dembo circumvents this problem by
producing a comprehensive and yet workable repertoire for Black,
offering a solution against each of White's tries, whether it's a
critical main line or a tricky sideline. After reading this book,
you will have the required knowledge and confidence to begin
playing the Grunfeld in your own games.
*Written by a renowned Grunfeld expert
*Covers all of White's main tries
*Reveals the tactical and positional ideas for both sides
Yelena Dembo is a young International Master from Greece with

Calculation is key to winning chess games. Converting your chess knowledge into concrete moves requires calculation and precise visualisation. The bad news: calculation is hard work. You cannot rely on feeling or intuition -- you will have to turn on your brainpower. The good news: you can improve your calculation skills by training.
Set up a position on a chessboard and try to solve exercises without moving the pieces! Grandmaster Ramesh RB is the perfect coach to awaken your chess brain and feed you precisely the right exercises.
This book fills an enormous void in chess literature. There are a
countless number of players who are very happy to defend the black
side of the Queen's Gambit or play the Nimzo-Indian, Queen's
Indian, Bogo-Indian or Benoni. However, more often than not they
have been forced to muddle their way through a whole variety of
annoying sidelines White has at his or her disposal, including the
dreaded Trompowsky, the tricky Blackmar-Diemer Gambit and the
tiresome Colle Variation. Now finally help is at hand! In this
unique book John Cox reveals everything Black players need to know
about all of White's offbeat tries, presenting Black with
no-nonsense answers to every white option. Read this book and you
will be fully armed to deal with anything that White can throw at
you. In fact, you'll have all the White players running back to the
main lines!
*Covers all of White's options
*Written by an openings expert
*Ideal for club and tournament players
Tired of playing the same old openings? Worried about having to
learn too much theory? Then this book is what you're looking for!
International Master Angus Dunnington presents you with an all-new
and attacking opening repertoire based on the move 1 d4. Rather
than getting bogged down with theory, Dunnington concentrates on
constructing easy-to-learn systems against all of Black's possible
defences. He chooses lines which are fun to play, easy to learn and
will pose your unsuspecting opponent lots of problems. * All
possible defences to 1 d4 are covered * Written by a renowned
openings expert * Ideal for club and tournament players
I left chess in 2012. I did not touch it for several years. Then I
decided to test my strength in Internet blitz. I started from
scratch. The board floated before my eyes, and my knee twitched.
Less than two months later, I crossed the grandmaster rating mark.
My opponents, among them lots of players with a big name, played
chess better than me. Surprisingly though, I knew more. On a small
island of chess theory, onto which I lured them, I was better
equipped. Much better! About 30% of the games ended in wins around
the 20th move. A quarter of the games simply ended in mate. In all
games, I opened with the moves 1.b3 and 1b6. International Master
Ilya Odessky is the worlds leading expert on the 1.b3 and 1b6 chess
opening systems. Despite their apparent calm, these openings can
get extremely sharp. Now Odessky presents his findings and
achievements of recent years. His baffling traps will help you
crush your opponents in the opening, with both White and Black.
Odessky admits that some of his lines may objectively be somewhat
dubious. But in blitz and rapid games they will lead to spectacular
play and many surprising wins. Ilya Odessky will entertain, amuse
and surprise you in this highly unusual chess opening book full of
ultra-romantic chess.
The King's Indian is a hugely popular opening at all levels of
chess. Rather than attempting to secure early equality, Black is
fighting for the initiative from the very first moves. White is
allowed to build up an early central advantage but Black relies on
the middlegame, hoping that the central installations that White
has constructed will become unwieldy and vulnerable to a
devastating counterattack. In many variations, White pursues
material or strategic gains but in return Black has tactical and
attacking opportunities. The King's Indian Defence appeals to
players who arrive at the board prepared for a fight. ----- The
Move by Move series provides an ideal format for the keen
chessplayer to improve their game. While reading you are
continually challenged to answer probing questions - a method that
greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just
as much as the traditional assimilation of chess knowledge.
Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you
actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you
learn. This is an excellent way to study chess while providing the
best possible chance to retain what has been learnt. ----- *
