Are you looking to attack with 1 d4? Then look no further...In this
book Richard Palliser provides in-depth coverage of three of the
most dangerous attacking set-ups available to White: the
Colle-Zukertort, the Barry, and the 150 attacks. In recent years
these three opening weapons have considerably gained in popularity,
especially at club level, and it's easy to see why. They are fun to
learn, and easy to play; they take Black away from the comfort zone
of established theory; and they can all lead to devastating mating
attacks against the black king. What more can you ask from an
opening? Whether you are playing the White or Black side, this book
tells all you need to know. The Everyman Chess "Starting Out" series

Levitt and David Friedgood shared their joy and appreciation of
chess beauty, engulfing readers with a wealth of amazing and
magnificent examples from the aesthetic side of the game. Moreover,
they also showed how this fascinating subject could actually be
analysed, and how this could help players to improve the practical
side of their game. Now the authors have produced a much awaited and
largely expanded second edition, in which they present further

Everyman Chess are delighted to present two further offerings from
their original and best-selling Starting Out opening series. The
Classical Sicilian is one of Black's most popular and highly
regarded opening choices against 1 e4, and it's been a favourite of
such greats as Vladimir Kramnik, Alexei Shirov and Vishy Anand.
White has a number of aggressive ways to battle against the
Classical: the fashionable Richter-Rauzer Attack; Bobby Fischer's
favourite, the Sozin Attack; and finally the wild Velimirovic
Attack, and no work on the Classical would be complete without a
study of these fascinating variations. The Grand Prix Attack is one
of White's most aggressive ways of fighting the Sicilian. It leads
to a sharp, complex battle from the very beginning, and White's
play is characterized by its lightning attacks against the black
king. The opening became a powerful weapon to use in the cut and
thrust of weekend tournament chess, where victory is everything and
draws are not enough. It steadily became more popular and even
gained the seal of approval from some of the world's elite such as
the UK's top two Grandmasters, Nigel Short and Michael Adams, who
have both utilized it with success. Everyman Chess's Starting Out
series has firmly established itself as the leading guide to
studying openings for up-and-coming players. These books are
distinguished by their easy-to-read layout, the lucid explanations
of the fundamentals, and the abundance of notes, tips and warnings
to help the reader absorb vital ideas. Starting Out opening books
are ideal for enthusiastic chess players who have little experience
of the openings in question and who wish to appreciate the
essential principles behind them. *User-friendly design to help

The Colle is a solid, reliable system of development based on the
popular opening move 1 d4. A major selling point is that although
the system is very easy to learn and play it leads to complex,
exciting middlegame positions where White often launches a violent
attack against Black's king. The former World Correspondence
Champion Cecil Purdy once wrote, 'A player who specializes in the
Colle System needs to spend only about a tenth of the time studying
the openings (for White) that he would otherwise have to.' The
Colle is a particular favourite amongst club players, but is often
also seen at grandmaster level; perhaps its most well-known
exponents are the former World Championship Candidate Artur Yusupov
and the twice World Junior Champion Shakhriyar Mamedyarov.
This book is a further addition to Everyman's best-selling
"Starting Out" series, which has been acclaimed for its original
approach to tackling chess openings. International Master Richard
Palliser examines the fundamentals of the Colle, elaborating on the
crucial early moves and ideas for both sides in a way that is often
neglected in other texts. The reader is helped throughout with a
plethora of notes, tips and warnings highlighting the vital
characteristics of the Colle and of opening play in general.
"Starting Out: The Colle "is a perfect guide for improving players
and those new to this opening.
*Written by a Colle expert
*Concentrates on the basic principles of the openings
*Ideal for improvers, club players and tournament players
Richard Palliser is a young English International Master who is
quickly carving out a reputation as a skilled and prolific chess
writer. His previous works for EverymanChess include "The" "Bb5
Sicilian" and "Tango!,"" "both of" "which were warmly received by
the critics and chess public alike.
The Nimzo-Indian is one of Black's most universally popular and
respectable answers to 1 d4. It could be said that no other opening
allows Black to play for a win from such a sound positional basis,
while its flexibility gives rise to a multitude of different
positions rich in tactical and positional play. The list of
Nimzo-Indian admirers runs like a who's who of the chess world:
Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand, Anatoly Karpov, and
Michael Adams are just a handful of top Grandmasters who have
utilized it with great effect.
With the Nimzo-Indian being such a fashionable opening, some Black
players are put off by the possibility of having to learn a
labyrinth of different variations. However, in "Play the
Nimzo-Indian," Edward Dearing solves this problem by constructing a
concise and workable repertoire for Black, offering a solution
against each of White's tries, whether it's a critical main line or
a tricky side variation. Readers will gain the necessary knowledge
and confidence to begin playing the Nimzo-Indian in their games.
>Explains an opening favored by the world's elite
>Written by a renowned openings expert
>Covers all of White's main tries
The Royal Chess Couple in Action introduces the dominant leadership
of the royal game. The King is its most significant piece while the
Queen is its mightiest one. Following a brief historical overview
the reader is met with the wealth of tactical abilities
characterizing the main heroes, their strengths and weaknesses in
attack and defence, while acting on their own or collaborating with
other pieces. The authors, both are experienced players and tutors,
offer to the improving player a selection of almost 500 instructive
positions he may choose to use for training, just as fun read...or
both!
The Scotch Game is one of the oldest openings in chess and has a
great history, but more recently it was catapulted back into the
limelight due to the enterprise of World number one Garry Kasparov,
who completely rejuvenated the opening with an abundance of
original ideas for White. He utilized the opening in World
Championship matches and other elite events, with very successful
results. As a direct result of this, the Scotch Game, a dynamic and
sharp opening, has once again become popular at all levels of
chess.
In this easy-to-read guide, Grandmaster and openings expert John
Emms goes back to basics, studying the essential principles of the
Scotch Opening and its numerous variations. Throughout the book
there are an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings to guide the
improving player, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both
sides are clearly illustrated.

Jesus de la Villas worldwide bestseller 100 Endgames You Must Know
successfully debunked the myth that endgame theory is complex and
that endgame books are tedious. Reviewers praised its clarity and
completeness and thousands of players dramatically improved their
endgame understanding (and their results!). In recent years, De la
Villas students sometimes complained that when they had to apply
what they had studied in 100 Endgames, they didnt always have the
material ready at their fingertips. De la Villa then made an
important discovery: most of the errors his students made are being
made by others as well, even by strong and sometimes famous chess
players! De la Villa started collecting training material and
selected those exercises best suited to retain and improve your
knowledge and avoid common errors. In this book the Spanish
grandmaster presents hundreds of exercises grouped according to the
various chapters in 100 Endgames. Solving these puzzles will drive
home the most important ideas, refresh your knowledge and improve
your technique. This book contains a massive amount of clear,
concise and easy-to-follow chess endgame instruction. The advice De
la Villa gives in the solutions is practical and useful. Ideal for
every post-beginner, club player and candidate master who wishes to
win more games.
The King's Indian has always been one of the sharpest, most complex
and popular openings that Black can play; it still provides the
setting for many encounters at the elite level of Grandmaster
chess. Straight from the start, Black fights for the initiative and
in many variations, while White pursues material gains, it is Black
who has the psychological advantage of trying checkmate the
opponent's king.
Despite its many advantages, some prospective King's Indian players
are put off by the seemingly endless amount of theory one is
supposed to learn. In Play the King's Indian, however, Grandmaster
and life-long King's Indian devotee Joe Gallagher has produced a
comprehensive and yet workable black repertoire against all of
White's most dangerous possibilities.
*Written by a renowned King's Indian expert
*Includes up-to-date theory on a fascinating opening
*Covers all of White's replies
Endgames involving only kings and pawns are the most fundamental of
all chess positions, and a firm understanding of them is required
in order to become confident of tackling more complex endings that
preceded them. In this easy-to-read guide, Grandmaster and
distinguished endgames expert Glenn Flear focuses on the very
basics of pawn endings. Beginning with the simplest of positions
and only gradually working through to more challenging material,
Flear outlines the key principles and rules, and demonstrates how
these work in practical examples. As one of the priorities of such
endings is to promote pawns to queens, Flear additionally deals
with queen endings that arise naturally from the simpler form. As
is commonplace with the renowned Starting Out series, there are an
abundance of notes, tips and warnings throughout the book to help
improving players. Starting Out: Pawn Endgames is perfect for those
who have previously honed their chess skills with the earlier books
Starting Out in Chess, Tips for Young Players and Improve Your
Endgame Play. Highlights include: *Covers all crucial pawn endings
*Easy step-by-step guide to better endgame play *Ideal for
improving players *User-friendly layout to help readers absorb the
key ideas

which are tournament classics never-before analyzed

Most chess games of beginners and post-beginners are decided by
fairly straightforward tactics. Anyone who wants to progress beyond
this level and become a strong club player or a candidate master,
needs to understand that somewhat mysterious-looking resource, the
positional sacrifice. International Master Merijn van Delft has
studied and loved positional sacrifices for as long as he can
remember. This non-forcing tool is not just a surprising and highly
effective way of creating a decisive advantage during a game.
Positional sacrifices are also instruments of superior beauty. Van
Delft has created a unique thematic structure for all types of
positional sacrifices. He shows the early historical examples,
explains which long-term goals are typical for each fundamental
theme and presents lots of instructive modern examples. He then
concentrates on those sacrifices that have become standard features
of positional play. Solving the exercises he has added will further
enhance your skills. Playing a positional sacrifice will always
require courage. Merijn van Delft takes you by the hand and not
only teaches the essential technical know-how, he also helps you to
recognize the opportunities when to take the plunge. Mastering
Positional Sacrifices is bound to become a modern-day classic.
Giving mate is the ultimate goal of every chess player. Finding
that all-decisive combination is immensely satisfying. But how are
you supposed to spot a checkmate when you are sitting at the board
with the clock ticking? In this guide International Master Vladimir
Barsky teaches the method created by his mentor Viktor Khenkin
(1923-2010). Its based on an ingenious classification of the most
frequently occurring mating schemes. A wide range of chess players
will find it an extremely useful tool to recognize mating patterns
and calculate the often narrow path to the kill. All the 1,000
examples (850 of them in exercise format) that Barsky presents are
from games played in 21st century. He has carefully selected the
most instructive combinations and lucidly explains the typical
techniques to corner your opponents king. More often than you would
expect, positions that look innocent at first sight, turn out to
contain a mating pattern. This is not just another book full of
chess puzzles. Its a brilliantly organized course that has proven
to be effective. Finding mate isnt rocket science, but you need to
know what to look for. Vladimir Barsky teaches you exactly that.
Some players become good at chess, some very good, while others
excel at the game. In this book Jacob Aagaard identifies the key
factors that separate the very strong players from the rest. In
Excelling at Chess, he includes chapters on when to calculate, how
to evaluate positions, how to study theory, how to study the
endgame and when to force the position. Anyone who follows the
advice in this book cannot fail to improve their feel for the
game.
