Simon Williams presents an ambitious opening repertoire for Black
based on the ever-popular French Defence. In this book one of the
world's most imaginative Grandmasters combines his unique attacking
ideas with the traditionally solid French structure, resulting in a
powerful armoury of weapons. This will prove ideal for players who
like to seize the initiative and cause problems for their opponents
from the outset. Williams' recommendations are based on his own
practical experience, where his ideas have stood the test of time
against powerful grandmaster opposition. Attacking Chess is a brand
new series of opening repertoire books. It focuses on traditional
attacking openings, as well as creative and forceful ways to play
openings that are not always associated with attacking chess. It
provides ambitious repertoires designed for players of all levels.
*A Grandmaster's repertoire in the French Defence *Packed with new
ideas, analysis and novelties *Illustrative games explain typical
plans and tactics
Your opponent plays a gambit against you. How dare they!? But how
can you punish them? Spanish Grandmaster Salgado has taken a close
look at a wide variety of 'Gambit Lines'. Many gambit lines, where
one or more pawns are sacrificed for the initiative, have to be
taken seriously, but Ivan has succeeded in finding many new ideas
and theoretical improvements. The result is the neutralisation or
refutation of most of these common and well known 'Gambits'. This
book is simply a must for anyone who wants to be fully prepared to
engage in battle against a 'Gambit Player'. If you are a gambit
player yourself, you need to read this to prepare yourself for new
challenges to your systems.
This book takes a closer look at the Classic mistakes by amateur
players include: 1. Moving a piece too often in the opening. This
is one of the mainstays which we think relates at least partly to
the desire to create something in the opening, when we would be
better advised to focus on simple development. 2. Impatience.
Sometimes amateur players are too eager to change something when
there really is no need. 3. Overgeneralizing. One of the biggest
differences I've noticed when comparing professional play to
amateur play is that the former is much more about concrete
calculation - you go there, we go here and so on - whereas an
amateur player will have a tendency to overgeneralize when thinking
about a position, perhaps because they are not used to the basic
art of calculation. 4. Cutting variations off too quickly. Amateur
players do not extend their calculation far enough, and thus
superficiality tends to kick in. These and other mistakes are
explained in the book. Of course it should be noted that
professional players also make these kinds of mistakes.
"Across the Board" is the definitive work on chessboard
problems. It is not simply about chess but the chessboard
itself--that simple grid of squares so common to games around the
world. And, more importantly, the fascinating mathematics behind
it. From the Knight's Tour Problem and Queens Domination to their
many variations, John Watkins surveys all the well-known problems
in this surprisingly fertile area of recreational mathematics. Can
a knight follow a path that covers every square once, ending on the
starting square? How many queens are needed so that every square is
targeted or occupied by one of the queens?
Each main topic is treated in depth from its historical
conception through to its status today. Many beautiful solutions
have emerged for basic chessboard problems since mathematicians
first began working on them in earnest over three centuries ago,
but such problems, including those involving polyominoes, have now
been extended to three-dimensional chessboards and even chessboards
on unusual surfaces such as toruses (the equivalent of playing
chess on a doughnut) and cylinders. Using the highly visual
language of graph theory, Watkins gently guides the reader to the
forefront of current research in mathematics. By solving some of
the many exercises sprinkled throughout, the reader can share fully
in the excitement of discovery.
Showing that chess puzzles are the starting point for important
mathematical ideas that have resonated for centuries, "Across the
Board" will captivate students and instructors, mathematicians,
chess enthusiasts, and puzzle devotees.
The author focused in his first volume on middlegames, now his
attention was drawn to endgames. Romain has carefully selected more
than 496 positions, which arose in real games in the recent past.
He separated the exercises into 11 different categories, covering
both tactics and strategy, attack and defence. This book is a
fantastic training tool for any player to improve his level of
chess thinking.
There is much published on chess tactics, strategy, openings and
endings, but little on how to come up with imaginative solutions
through logical thinking and evaluation. This book is dedicated to
that task and provides over 700 'fresh' positions, incorporating a
variety of schemes of thought for the reader to solve. The examples
emphasise the power of logical and resourceful thinking, quick wit
and imagination. In each chapter the author presents
little-explored concepts, such as progressive and reciprocal
thinking, to help the reader achieve decisive results and to make
fewer mistakes in calculation. The material has been accumulated by
the author over many years as a trainer and will be of great
benefit to competitive players seeking to improve their methods of
thinking.
This book is part of a series from Quality Chess examining the
cutting edge of opening theory. The idea is to identify the most
important theoretical battlegrounds and then analyse as deeply as
possible in search of improvements. Thus the reader will be ahead
of the current state-of-the-art, rather than lagging behind trying
to memorise old games. The book considers the Sicilian Najdorf - a
favourite opening of ambitious players at every level. This book
concentrates on lines where White chooses 6.Be3, heading for the
English Attack. The variations covered are: Topalov: 6...e6 7.f3 b5

Most chess games of beginners and post-beginners are decided by
fairly straightforward tactics. Anyone who wants to progress beyond
this level and become a strong club player or a candidate master,
needs to understand that somewhat mysterious-looking resource, the
positional sacrifice. International Master Merijn van Delft has
studied and loved positional sacrifices for as long as he can
remember. This non-forcing tool is not just a surprising and highly
effective way of creating a decisive advantage during a game.
Positional sacrifices are also instruments of superior beauty. Van
Delft has created a unique thematic structure for all types of
positional sacrifices. He shows the early historical examples,
explains which long-term goals are typical for each fundamental
theme and presents lots of instructive modern examples. He then
concentrates on those sacrifices that have become standard features
of positional play. Solving the exercises he has added will further
enhance your skills. Playing a positional sacrifice will always
require courage. Merijn van Delft takes you by the hand and not
only teaches the essential technical know-how, he also helps you to
recognize the opportunities when to take the plunge. Mastering
Positional Sacrifices is bound to become a modern-day classic.
San Luis 2005 is the most celebrated chess tournament of the
decade. There, Bulgarian Grandmaster Veselin Topalov triumphed and
proved that he is a worthy successor to World Champions such as
Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. In this ambitious work Gershon
and Nor analyze all the games from the tournament, but there is no
danger of the reader drowning in masses of variations, as the
authors clearly explain the ideas behind the moves. Tournament
books used to be a familiar part of chess literature with Zurich
1953 a classic example, however such books are rare because of the
huge effort they demand from the authors. Gershon and Nor have
risen to the challenge and produced a book that is destined to
become a modern classic, a magnificent book worthy of an
extraordinary tournament. Many color photographs of the event and
the surrounding Argentinean scenery help the reader feel what it
was like to be at San Luis 2005.
The interviews in this book span over twenty years, over two
decades. For years I went with my recording device to tournaments
like Wijk aan Zee, Frankfurt Chess Classic, Hoogeveen... often to
interview the interesting player of the moment in some hotel bar or
quiet interview room. 31 out of the 35 interviews came about this
way. That is... until March 2020, when out of nowhere, covid broke
out. Suddenly chess tournaments were no longer held and a live
interview with chess players was no longer possible.
I was lucky enough to play against six world champions and several
top players in my modest chess career, but the greatest player I
feel privileged to have known, to have spent time with him, was
Miguel Najdorf, "El Viejo". This is a chess book, with 275
commented games, it covers all his chess career, but it has also
many stories. Najdorf was the most important Argentinean chess
player, and he was an exceptional person. Oscar Panno said that
Najdorf reminded him of Don Quixote, in the part of the book where
he tells Sancho Panza, "Wherever I am, that is where the head of
the table is going to be". He successfully overcame the most
terrible setbacks, as few are capable of doing. Writing about
Miguel Najdorf is one of my greatest pleasures as a chess
journalist and writer! Zenon Franco Ocampos, April 2021.
Grandmaster Grivas presents the reader an unique and massive amount
of amazing puzzles including their historical background. All the
most famous and rare tactical themes are covered, promising the
read of the year!
This is the first volume of the new series "Key Concepts of Chess".
The idea is to deal with middlegames in which a certain structure
or essential theme becomes central. The idea of starting this
series is in line with the "Understanding before Moving" series
because the aim, is to improve the understanding of club chess
players. According to the author, playing an opening should be
'hung up' on stereotypical ideas and concepts belonging to this
structure. The thorough exploration of middlegame structures is
beyond the scope of opening books, hence it makes more sense to
expose it in this complementary series. In this first volume, the
"Hedgehog System" is discussed in detail. Apart from being part of
the author's repertoire, this typical set-up deserves to be widely
highlighted. Although in the second part of the trilogy on the
Sicilian, the Hedgehog has already made its appearance, in this
book the seemingly fragile, but oh so treacherous creature can
reconsider its spines in an extensive way.
From a theoretical backwater to a fully blown main line opening,
the rise of the Scandinavian Defence (1 e4 d5) has been nothing
short of meteoric. Over the past fifteen years the Scandinavian has
become more and more popular both at club and Grandmaster level. It
even managed to obtain an ultimate seal of approval when Vishy
Anand employed it in his World Championship match with Garry
Kasparov!
In this book Grandmaster John Emms explains the strategies and
tactics of this dynamic and fashionable opening. Through the use of
model games for both sides, the author provides a thorough
grounding in the key ideas, so that players of all standards can
quickly and confidently begin to use the Scandinavian in their own
games.
This book provides a complete update of Emms's original and
best-selling edition of The Scandinavian, published in 1997. Since
then there have been many new and important discoveries from both
sides of the board, and these are included here.
*Ideal for club and tournament players
*Explains the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both
sides
*Written by a leading expert on the Scandinavian
*Provides everything you need to know to start playing the opening
