You can be an individual and have your own opinion on the way you
like to dress or are like. If someone is different from you, accept
them for who they are because it always comes back around to you.
If someone is different, such as their race or handicap, maybe they
have birth defects or have different parents than everyone else, or
maybe they have tattoos and piercings. If they are different, it
can be an interesting experience to get to know them. There are
many different people in the world. If you are different and
someone doesn't like you, don't worry and never let anyone bully
you. Have confidence in yourself, that you are special, and don't
let anyone make you feel bad. Being an individual means that you
are different in a good way, and other people will appreciate you.
Don't follow what other people like all the time. Have your own
opinion, and maybe people will follow what you like. If not, it's
good to be different, and it's fun to be creative. The world is
your palette. You don't need Halloween to express yourself. You can
express yourself any day of the year

Photographer/painters Ted Meyer and Anna Stump love tattooed
bodies. "Exploding Tattoo" is an exciting new art book that
catalogs their on-going project, and celebrates men and women with
tattoos as the "New Art Collectors," who collect for their bodies
rather than their walls. Meyer and Stump choose models with
large-scale tattoos of various genres, from traditional to
pop-inspired. The tattoo imagery is enlarged and painted on
photo-backdrop paper and the model poses in front of the work. Each
model inspires and influences how the backdrops are painted,
resulting in stunning and colorful portraits. If you love tattoos,
this book is one-of-a-kind. Includes an essay on the history of
tattooing by Dr. Teri Sowell.
Sean Hobden was the youngest member of the Old Timers Tattoo Club
when it was formed in 1989. He was privileged to hear the stories
of the last of the old time character showmen tattooists when
tattooing was still a part of the underworld and hadn't yet gone
mainstream and become popularised. Now you can hear the stories of
the legends of tattooing from the last century that were told to
the author first hand. Read how street shop walk in tattooists
dealt with the many drunks and long queues. Humorous accounts and
anecdotes of Ron Ackers, Painless Jeff, Cockney Paul, Benn Gun,
Barry Louvaine, Charlie bell, Jock of Kings Cross and many more.
Many old time trade secrets such as "Three waying" and the "Vanity
sink" are revealed, as they are no longer needed in modern
tattooing. The book also covers old school politics and serves as a
social history of the last part of the previous century. The book
now has it's own website so that you can see photos of characters

at a loss to identify the desiccated woman. But as Egyptian burial
jars of body parts with cryptic messages attached start appearing,

and an ancient religion form a potent mix, unleashing a wave of
terror throughout the city. Caught in a race against time while
battling his own demons, Francis must fight to uncover the true
identity of the Embalmer before it's too late...
Illustrated with specific subcultural examples and interviews with
subculture members, "Body Style" explores the subcultural body and
its style within global culture. Analyzed, theorized, politicized,
and sensationalized, the subcultural body functions as a framework
where individuals build a sense of self and subcultural identity.
Drawing on eleven years of research examining the intersections
within specific urban subcultures including Urban Tribalists,
Modern Primitives, Punks, Cybers, Industrials, Skates, among
others, the book reveals the subculture body as a site for
understanding subcultural identity, resistance, agency and fashion.
Divided into three main sections on subcultural body history,
subcultural body identity and subcultural body styles, this book
will be of particular interest to students of dress and fashion as
well as those studying subculture from sociology and cultural
studies perspectives.
This pioneering 1933 survey approaches body art from a variety of
angles, including artistic, semiotic, psychological, sociological,
and cultural perspectives. One of the first studies to analyze the
subconscious motivations and erotic implications behind tattooing,
it examines overt and subliminal messages of romance, patriotism,
and religious fervor. 27 illustrations.

Drawing on ethnographic case studies from Amazonia, Indonesia,
Africa, Melanesia and Polynesia, this text shows how bodily
presentation plays a fundamental role in contemporary identity
politics in tension with encompassing national and global
stereotypes, which may in turn both constrain and empower local
traditions.
Body Painting is a photo intense examination of the emerging art of
painting bodies with non-toxic paints. From face painting children
to the creation of painted "clothes" Doug Mitchel follows ten
artists as they apply paint to skin. Each artist is represented by
one chapter, each chapter follows a "paint job" from the initial
concept to the application of the final details. Each design is
different, but all are colorful and creative. With over 450 color
photographs printed on 144 pages, this book documents the
techniques and tools used by established artists. Application
methods include the brush, airbrush and even markers. Each method
has advantages and disadvantages, each has its place and each is
covered in detail in this new book from Wolfgang Publications. In
addition to the photo sequences with descriptive captions, each
chapter includes an interview with the artist. Topics include the
way in which the artist learned his or her trade, preferred tools
and which paint they prefer to use. The discussion of paint choices
includes airbrushed body make up, textile acrylics, liquid latex
and markers from companies like Crayola. As pointed out in the
captions and the interviews, each material has good points and bad,
all are covered in Body Painting. The best teachers are the men and
women who have already mastered the skill. Body Painting presents
the accumulated wisdom and experience of ten "teachers" each of who
has a lesson to share with the readers. With a wealth of photos
Body Painting is both a colorful look at an emerging art form, and
a very useful how-to book.
What happens to body arts when these aesthetic practices assume
fresh significance in the context of modernity? In many parts of
the indigenous world, the realm of body arts has become an arena
for innovation, debate, revival and repression under the conditions
of modernity. Among some groups, formerly suppressed 'traditions'
of body arts have recently been revived. Elsewhere, body arts have
been the means for creating or renovating identities in response to
a developing international tourist market and in the light of novel
technologies of representation, such as photography and film. The
contributions to this volume draw together ideas emerging from the
anthropology of the body, the western interest in body
ornamentation of the 'Other', and the recent revival of specific
body arts such as tattooing and piercing. Drawing on ethnographic
case studies from Amazonia, Indonesia, Africa, Melanesia and
Polynesia, this volume shows how bodily presentation plays a
fundamental role in contemporary identity politics in tension with
encompassing national and global stereotypes, which may in turn
both constrain and empower local traditions.

Kim Hewitt explores self-mutilation through history and across
cultural divisions, finding these acts "positive expressions of
social custom, individualism and resourcefulness . . . symptomatic
of crises of identity, religious faith, or modern social
structures." In modern contexts, such ancient rituals continue to
function as an avenue of symbolic death and rebirth. In her
analysis of the origins and motivations of body modification, the
author draws upon psychological, medical, and cultural theories on
self-inflicted pain-tattooing and scarification as well as fasting,
bulimia, and some performance art. She finds such contemporary acts
of self-mutilation may "express a change in how society perceives
marginalization."
