Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels (Paperback, 2nd edition): Alun Thomas Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Alun Thomas
R1,825 Discovery Miles 18 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels are growing rapidly in popularity due to their versatility. The design and construction of both hard rock and soft ground tunnels has been revolutionised by the advent of the SCL method and now the use of permanent sprayed concrete linings has unlocked the true potential of the method to minimise construction costs and times. Yet the complex early age behaviour of the sprayed concrete makes the design difficult and requires a robust management system during construction. Consequently the great advantages of the method must be balanced against the risks, as a few high-profile tunnel collapses have illustrated. Practising engineers on site, in the design office or in client organizations will find this book an excellent introduction. It covers all aspects of SCL tunnelling - from the constituents of sprayed concrete to detailed design and management during construction. Although there is a close interdependence between all the facets of sprayed concrete, few engineers have the right breadth of experience and expertise to cover all of them. This urgently needs to be transferred to the wider engineering community as SCL tunnels play an increasingly important role in the delivery of the underground infrastructure which modern urban life demands. In this second edition, beyond a general updating to reflect new developments, the sections on permanent sprayed concrete, the innovative technology of spray applied waterproofing membranes, fibre reinforcement (both steel and macrosynthetic) and composite lining design have been expanded. Sustainability and environmental impact are addressed in a new section.

Risk Management in Engineering and Construction - Tools and Techniques (Paperback): Prasanta Kumar Dey, Stephen Ogunlana Risk Management in Engineering and Construction - Tools and Techniques (Paperback)
Prasanta Kumar Dey, Stephen Ogunlana
R1,477 Discovery Miles 14 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Today's businesses are driven by customer 'pull' and technological 'push'. To remain competitive in this dynamic business world, engineering and construction organizations are constantly innovating with new technology tools and techniques to improve process performance in their projects. Their management challenge is to save time, reduce cost and increase quality and operational efficiency. Risk management has recently evolved as an effective method of managing both projects and operations. Risk is inherent in any project, as managers need to plan projects with minimal knowledge and information, but its management helps managers to become proactive rather than reactive. Hence, it not only increases the chance of project achievement, but also helps ensure better performance throughout its operations phase. Various qualitative and quantitative tools are researched extensively by academics and routinely deployed by practitioners for managing risk. These have tremendous potential for wider applications. Yet the current literature on both the theory and practice of risk management is widely scattered. Most of the books emphasize risk management theory but lack practical demonstrations and give little guidance on the application of those theories. This book showcases a number of effective applications of risk management tools and techniques across product and service life in a way useful for practitioners, graduate students and researchers. It also provides an in-depth understanding of the principles of risk management in engineering and construction.

Elementary Behaviour of Composite Steel and Concrete Structural Members (Hardcover): Deric J. Oehlers, Mark A. Bradford Elementary Behaviour of Composite Steel and Concrete Structural Members (Hardcover)
Deric J. Oehlers, Mark A. Bradford
R3,191 Discovery Miles 31 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is aimed at developing the elementary analysis skills, familiarity and intuitive feel for composite construction that is required by undergraduate and graduate students, and by structural engineers. It does not require a prior knowledge of advanced analysis and design techniques, but builds on simple concepts such as statics and the mechanics of materials. A topic is first introduced by a brief description, with numerous carefully-chosen examples forming an integral part of the main text. Working through the examples allows the reader to gain a full understanding of the subject, as a technique is illustrated by its application to the design of new structures, or the important area of assessing and upgrading existing structures. The techniques described for the analysis of standard structures form a basis for understanding the way composite structures work, and these techniques are applied to many non-standard forms of composite construction that are rarely covered in national standards, if at all. The book is an essential purchase for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of structural and civil engineering, as well as all practitioners.

Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Commercial Buildings - An Analysis for Green-Building Implementation Using A Green Star... Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Commercial Buildings - An Analysis for Green-Building Implementation Using A Green Star Rating System (Hardcover)
Cuong N. N. Tran, Vivian W. Y. Tam, Khoa N Le
R4,492 Discovery Miles 44 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book develops a model to evaluate and assess life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions based on typical Australian commercial building design options. It also draws comparisons between some of the many green building rating tools that have been developed worldwide to support sustainable development. These include: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) by the Building Research Establishment, Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency (CASBEE) by the Japanese Sustainable Building Consortium, and Green Star Environmental Rating System by the Green Building Council of Australia. Life-cycle assessment (LCA), life-cycle energy consumption, and life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions form the three pillars of life-cycle studies, which have been used to evaluate environmental impacts of building construction. Assessment of the life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of buildings is one of the significant obstacles in evaluating green building performance. This book explains the methodology for achieving points for the categories associated with reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the Australian Green Star rating system. The model for the assessment uses GaBi 8.7 platform along with Visual Basic in Microsoft Excel and shows the relationship between the building's energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions released during the lifetime of the building. The data gathered in the book also illustrates that the green building design and specifications are becoming more popular and are being increasingly utilized in Australia. This book is important reading for anyone interested in sustainable construction, green design and buildings and LCA tools.

Transport and Interactions of Chlorides in Cement-based Materials (Paperback): Caijun Shi, Qiang Yuan, Fuqiang He, Xiang Hu Transport and Interactions of Chlorides in Cement-based Materials (Paperback)
Caijun Shi, Qiang Yuan, Fuqiang He, Xiang Hu
R1,425 Discovery Miles 14 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Chloride-induced corrosion is the most important durability issue of reinforced concrete structures, and the prediction and prevention of chloride-induced corrosion has attracted considerable interest all over the world. Given that chloride penetrates through the concrete cover, the issues concerning its transport are crucial. These include testing methods, prediction, and the prevention of ingress. During the transport process, physical and chemical interaction occurs between chloride and cement hydrates, which in turn affects the further transport, so the transport of chloride and these interactions are closely related and underpin our understanding of chloride-induced corrosion in RC structures. This book provides in-depth discussion of chloride transport and its interaction in cement-based materials, and reviews and summarizes the state of the art. The mechanisms and testing methods for chloride transport, chemical interactions of chloride with cement hydrates, chloride binding isotherms, measurement of penetration depths, factors affecting chloride transport, and modeling of chloride transport are discussed in detail. This book serves as a reference for researchers or engineer, and a textbook for graduate students.

Successful Building Using Ecodesign (Paperback): Christophe Gobin Successful Building Using Ecodesign (Paperback)
Christophe Gobin
R1,407 Discovery Miles 14 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The notion of ecodesign has now clearly become part of the building sector. It involves taking into consideration environmental issues that are indispensible in constructing our living environment. However, this method, which is industrial in origin, clearly shows that buildings are not the result of simply adding up technical rules. A much more demanding process underpins their development, one that engages all stakeholders in the industry and leads them towards using a new practice involving multi-criteria choices that are never unique. The object of this work is to review each of the stages in a building operation to illustrate the necessity of optimization and to observe the useful contribution that ecodesign and its tools can make. Ecodesign has been tackled from the professional point of view of those involved in construction work. In this perspective, the central tool is clearly that of the life cycle analysis (LCA). This book therefore describes the different steps of a project management cycle in accordance with a functional analysis. The product achievement is evaluated with the life cycle analysis which can be used as a measurement of its efficiency.

Sustainable Design and Construction in Africa - A System Dynamics Approach (Paperback): Oluwaseun Dosumu, Clinton Aigbavboa Sustainable Design and Construction in Africa - A System Dynamics Approach (Paperback)
Oluwaseun Dosumu, Clinton Aigbavboa
R1,413 Discovery Miles 14 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book addresses some of the countless challenges faced by developing countries when adopting sustainable design and construction and offers suggestions for the way forward for African development projects. The authors argue that the pervasive non-consideration of the interrelationship between the elements of sustainable design and construction is the reason for the current failures in sustainable design and construction in developed countries. By treating sustainability as a complex system, the authors provide the missing link between the design and construction of projects in a sustainable way with a view to improving industry and project performance. In doing so the book posits the need for improved sustainability practice in developing countries, lessons for developing countries from the successes and failures of sustainability adoption by developed nations, factors influencing adoption of sustainability and effects of sustainable designs and construction on productivity, human health and the environment at large. This book will be of interest to construction researchers, practitioners, professional bodies, housing policy makers and government institutions as well as training and funding providers in these areas.

Delhi's Changing Built Environment (Paperback): Piyush Tiwari, Jyoti Rao Delhi's Changing Built Environment (Paperback)
Piyush Tiwari, Jyoti Rao
R1,416 Discovery Miles 14 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The rapid expansion, urban form and development of the built environment in the world's second most populous city, Delhi, has been the consequence of social, political, economic, planning and architectural traditions that have shaped the city over thousands of years. Whilst seamless at times, these traditions have often resulted in the fragmented development of the city's built environment. This book charts the political, economic and social forces that drove development in India generally and in Delhi in particular, and investigates the drivers and constituents of Delhi's urban landscape. The book provides a lens through which to examine the development path of a mega-city, which can be used as a guide in the development of emerging urban centres. Furthermore, the strengths and weaknesses of Delhi's built environment are critically analysed, with consideration to the role of the market, finance and policy over time. This book not only provides valuable insight into the physical evolution of Delhi and its surrounds, but it also asks broader questions about how people, power and politics interact with urban environments. It is essential reading for planners, architects, urbanists and social historians.

The Healthy Indoor Environment - How to assess occupants' wellbeing in buildings (Paperback): Philomena M. Bluyssen The Healthy Indoor Environment - How to assess occupants' wellbeing in buildings (Paperback)
Philomena M. Bluyssen
R1,451 Discovery Miles 14 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite policy directives, standards and guidelines, indoor environmental quality is still poor in many cases. The Healthy Indoor Environment, winner of the 2016 IDEC Book Award, aims to help architects, building engineers and anyone concerned with the wellbeing of building occupants to better understand the effects of spending time in buildings on health and comfort. In three clear parts dedicated to mechanisms, assessment and analysis, the book looks at different indoor stressors and their effects on wellbeing in a variety of scenarios with a range of tools and methods. The book supports a more holistic way of evaluating indoor environments and argues that a clear understanding of how the human body and mind receive, perceive and respond to indoor conditions is needed. At the national, European and worldwide level, it is acknowledged that a healthy and comfortable indoor environment is important both for the quality of life, now and in the future, and for the creation of truly sustainable buildings. Moreover, current methods of risk assessment are no longer adequate: a different view on indoor environment is required. Highly illustrated and full of practical examples, the book makes recommendations for future procedures for investigating indoor environmental quality based on an interdisciplinary understanding of the mechanisms of responses to stressors. It forms the basis for the development of an integrated approach towards assessment of indoor environmental quality.

Quality Tools for Managing Construction Projects (Paperback): Abdul Razzak Rumane Quality Tools for Managing Construction Projects (Paperback)
Abdul Razzak Rumane
R1,440 Discovery Miles 14 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dealing with such a multi-layered and fungible intangible as quality during the design and construction process is difficult for all parties involved. To the architect, quality means an appealing and enduring design, but to the builder, it means understandable documents that, when acted upon, lead to an enduring, well-made structure. To the owner, it is the end result: a building that is not only fit for the purpose, but a positive addition to its surroundings. Reconciling these seemingly contrasting priorities requires processes that are embedded not just at the project level, but within the entire enterprise with designer, builder, and owner committed to integrating quality into all their business processes. Quality Tools for Managing Construction Projects not only details the importance of developing a comprehensive management system, but provides the tools and techniques required to do so. The book examines the usage and applications of tools and techniques in different phases of a construction project, focusing on plan quality, quality assurance, and quality control. Following the construction cycle, Dr. Rumane delineates the quality tools and their application, ending with the implementation of quality systems throughout the entire design and construction cycle. The book demonstrates how these tools can help in planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling a project-evolving project management into a system that ensures project deliverables consistently meet the defined scope on schedule and within budget. The author's systems perspective recognizes and supports the ideal collaborative approach that modern design and construction projects need. Dr. Rumane then demonstrates that successful quality management is more than a series of handoffs between teams who've completed tasks.

Minimum Reinforcement in Concrete Members, Volume 24 (Hardcover): A. Carpinteri Minimum Reinforcement in Concrete Members, Volume 24 (Hardcover)
A. Carpinteri
R2,098 Discovery Miles 20 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The ESIS-Technical Committee 9 on Concrete was established in 1990 and has met seven times. A proposal was put to European and extra-European laboratories entitled "Scale effects and transitional failure phenomena of reinforced concrete beams in flexure" which lead to several positive responses.

The central topic discussed by the committee was that of the minimum reinforcement in concrete members. The minimum amount of reinforcement is defined as that for which "peak load at first concrete cracking" and "ultimate load after steel yielding" are equal. In this way, any brittle behaviour is avoided as well as any localized failure, if the member is not over-reinforced. In other words, there is a reinforcement percentage range, depending on the size-scale, within which the plastic limit analysis may be applied with its static and kinematic theorems.

Carpinteri, Ferro, Bosco and El-Katieb propose a LEFM model, according to which reinforcement reactions are applied directly on the crack surfaces and a compatibility condition is locally imposed on the crack opening displacement in correspondence with the reinforcement. The theoretical model is found to provide a satisfactory estimate of the minimum percentage of reinforcement that depends on the scale and enables the element in flexure to prevent brittle failure.

Miss Savidge Moves Her House - The Extraordinary Story of May Savidge and her House of a Lifetime (Paperback): Christine Adams,... Miss Savidge Moves Her House - The Extraordinary Story of May Savidge and her House of a Lifetime (Paperback)
Christine Adams, Michael McMahon 1
R266 Discovery Miles 2 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

' This story will appeal to those who still believe that an Englishman' s home is his castle, and to those who have a soft spot for indomitable old women' Daily Telegraph The hardback edition of this book, published in 2009 under the title A Lifetime in the Building, saw its extraordinary story featured not only in the Daily Mail but also Hello magazine - and quickly sold out two printings. Now it is re-launched in paperback under a new title to highlight its appeal as the tale of an extraordinary, maverick woman and her even more remarkable achievement. May Savidge lived in a half-timbered house in Hertfordshire. When the council served her with a compulsory purchase notice to make way for a roundabout, May decided she had to move - but so did the house. So she had the whole thing dismantled and shipped to the North Norfolk coast... and then spent the rest of her life rebuilding it, single-handed. Her fame spread around the world. Antiques Roadshow broadcast, unprecedentedly, two features about her house. Now her niece, Christine Adams, who inherited May' s house and completed it - at the cost of her own marriage - tells her aunt' s life story from the voluminous diaries and letters she left behind. Christine Adams now runs a Bed and Breakfast in May Savidge' s old house in Norfolk. Michael McMahon is also the co-author of My Friend the Enemy (978 1 84513 316 0).

Resilient Building Retrofits - Combating the Climate Crisis (Paperback): Sarah Sayce, Sara Wilkinson, Gillian Armstrong,... Resilient Building Retrofits - Combating the Climate Crisis (Paperback)
Sarah Sayce, Sara Wilkinson, Gillian Armstrong, Samantha Organ
R1,185 Discovery Miles 11 850 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This radical book aims to inject new insight and urgency into the discourse on the retrofitting of commercial and residential buildings in the face of the climate emergency. It is about the why, how and who should take the lead in revolutionising buildings in the face of serious climate and social change. Buildings contribute very significantly to the output of carbon, particularly in developed countries where the stock is old, but it is neither feasible nor desirable to demolish them all and start again! If existing buildings cannot in be replaced in the short-term by new zero carbon stock, retrofitting and adaptation of the existing building stock is critical and urgent. This book explains why and how the improvement of buildings requires a complex, holistic approach that brings all stakeholders together with respect and understanding. Yet to do this against a limited time frame is challenging. The book analyses what must be done, explores how it could be achieved and sets out a manifesto for action by all those engaged: from policy makers, to educationalists, designers, constructors, investors, funders and occupiers. By bringing together authors from across the built environment disciplines, the book stimulates debate within policy, practice and education circles which must lead to action if we are to avoid catastrophe. This is a unique addition to the literature on the sustainability of existing buildings and their retrofitting for the benefit of all.

Environmental Management in Construction - A Quantitative Approach (Paperback): Zhen Chen, Heng Li Environmental Management in Construction - A Quantitative Approach (Paperback)
Zhen Chen, Heng Li
R1,330 Discovery Miles 13 300 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Demands on the construction industry are changing, and it is now virtually essential for environmental management to be considered at all stages of a project. Many construction managers are finding a quantitative approach useful, and this book outlines four quantitative methods which can be applied at different construction stages, and which fit within a comprehensive framework of dynamic Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). These include: a method to quantitatively evaluate and reduce pollution and hazards levels a method to evaluate the environmental-consciousness of proposed construction plans a method to reduce on-site construction wastes through an incentive reward programme a method to promote C and D waste exchange in the local construction industry. With an experimental case study of the application of these methods, this book delivers a comprehensive review of environmental management issues in construction. With regulatory requirements potentially favouring the quantitative approach, this timely guide ensures that contractors will be able to keep pace with environmental management standards.
