Although plumbing has occupied a central position in American life since the mid-nineteenth century, little scholarly attention has been paid to its history. Until 1840, indoor plumbing could be found only in mansions and first-class hotels. Then, in the decade before midcentury, Americans representing a wider range of economic circumstances began to install household plumbing with increasing eagerness. Ogle draws on a wide assortment of contemporary sources -- sanitation reports, builders' manuals, fixture catalogues, patent applications, and popular scientific tracts -- to show how the demand for plumbing was prompted more by an emerging middle-class culture of convenience, reform, and domestic life than by fears about poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation. Zwei Entwicklungsstufen fiihren zum fertigen Bauwerk: Die Planung oder Konstruktion und der Herstellungsvorgang. Die Forderung eines Bauunternehmers wie Soeser "wir mussen weniger Konstruktionsingenieure, wir mussen mehr Betriebsingenieure aus bilden" fiihrt daher dazu, daB der Bauingenieur sich mit den vielerlei Fragen der Baubetriebslehre und unter diesen wieder mit denen seiner Werkzeug maschinen, d. h. also der Maschinen, die beirn Herstellungsvorgang auf der Baustelle in weitestem Sinne benotigt werden, ganz anders als bisher bescMf tigen muB. Charakteristisch hierfur ist, daB die Vereinigung der Bauingenieurabteilungen aller Hochschulen Deutschlands bei ihrer letzten Tagung am 7. Marz 1931 in Dresden beschlossen hat, in Zukunft neben den konstruktiven auch betriebs technische Probleme in den Diplomaufgaben starker in den Vordergrund zu schieben, eine Auffassung, die schon dadurch gerechtfertigt ist, daB 80 bis 90% aller Bauingenieur-Studierenden spater beirn Unternehmer und nur der Rest bei den Staatsbauverwaltungen Verwendung finden. Die Schwierigkeit zur Verwirklichung dieses Zieles besteht nur darin, daB es sich einmal um Dinge handelt, die, wie praktisches Gefiihl, Organisationstalent, Fiihrereigenschaften, Menschenbehandlung usw."
