The Fairmount Park Motor Races, 1908-1911 (Paperback): The Fairmount Park Motor Races, 1908-1911 (Paperback)
R1,182 Discovery Miles 11 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For four years, early in the last century, the Fairmount Park Motor Races were run on an eight-mile course in Philadelphia's West Fairmount Park. They drew half a million spectators the first year, but surprisingly they have been overlooked as part of automobile racing history and as part of the history of Philadelphia. In contrast to other racing events, such as the Vanderbilt Cup, there were never any serious injuries and not a single death, but after four years of spectacular racing, the event was banned, with safety concerns cited. Opening with a brief look at automobile racing prior to 1908, the book covers the events leading up to the first race. It discusses the proposal to have a race in Fairmount Park and the reasons why Philadelphia, and the park in particular, was such an unlikely place. Both the on-track action of the races and the off-track events that affected them are described. Dr. J. William White's successful crusade, following the 1911 outing, to stop the races is examined, as are attempts to revive the race in the following six years, including Philadelphia's attempt to compete with Indianapolis by constructing a two-mile oval speedway, and the city's eventual exit from automobile racing.

Buddha on the Backstretch - The Spiritual Wisdom of Driving 200 MPH (Hardcover): Arlynda Lee Boyer Buddha on the Backstretch - The Spiritual Wisdom of Driving 200 MPH (Hardcover)
Arlynda Lee Boyer
R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Buddhism and NASCAR. By using Buddhism as a lens to examine NASCAR racing - and NASCAR as a means to illustrate Buddhist teachings, ""Buddha on the Backstretch"" provides a unique new perspective on the field of sports and spirituality. Not aimed solely at either Buddhists or race fans, the work's message of self-improvement via popular culture serves as a Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance for a new generation. ""Buddha on the Backstretch"" considers mindfulness, handling setbacks, patience, discipline, heightened awareness, impermanence, equanimity, and how we face death. The work looks at why we need heroes, and how we can take a hero's story and use it for our own growth. Like an anthropologist, the author can take a story about loose radiator bolts and red North Carolina clay and tease out of it three different Buddhist elements of mindfulness. The aim is to show readers how to examine all facets of culture and all the people around them, and be able to find, in seemingly unlikely places, profound lessons on how to live. If the student is truly ready, then a NASCAR driver can be as profound a teacher as a guru in robes, and a serene Buddhist teaching as lively and colorful as a weekend at the track. The first work by an imaginative and quirky new author, ""Buddha on the Backstretch"" will alter the way you see the world, help you see wisdom everywhere and find the joy in the daily spiritual practice that is Life.

The Blount Report - NASCAR's Most Overrated & Underrated Drivers, Cars, Teams, and Tracks (Hardcover): Terry Blount The Blount Report - NASCAR's Most Overrated & Underrated Drivers, Cars, Teams, and Tracks (Hardcover)
Terry Blount; Foreword by Allen Bestwick
R730 R550 Discovery Miles 5 500 Save R180 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Driving a race car at speeds approaching 200 mph is a specialized skill that takes years to master, and it's not for the faint of heart. Some drivers are better at it than others, while others aren't quite as good as their reputation. Anyone who has ever sat in the grandstands at a race or watched their favorite driver get unfairly bumped during a crucial moment at a NASCAR event on TV has made his or her own judgments. Fans know that tempers can flare and controversies erupt on any turn, on the straightaway, or in the pits. While fans continue to debate the relative merits of their favorite drivers, ESPN.com's premier motor sports writer Terry Blount now brings some needed clarity and perspective to America's biggest spectator sport, rating drivers, teams, cars, and tracks, and "bluntly" lets readers know which are overrated and which are underrated in a new book that's bound to further the debate and stir up more controversy. If your favorite driver is listed as overrated, chances are you won't like it, but if your guy is a choice for underrated, you'll love it. It's an all-fun but in-depth look at the opinionated discussions fans have in their living rooms every week-end: "That guy isn't as good as people think" Or, "That driver is way better than where he finished." Did the reputation match the results? Was the performance better than the perception? And how much of a factor was the car? Evaluating driver skills is a whopping task, even for the most knowledgeable folks in the sport. But Blount is one of the most qualified analysts, and well up to the task of trying to separate fact from fiction, reputation from reality, and equipment from talent. Along with rating drivers, TheBlount Report also rates a vast array of the NASCAR world from speedways to races and rules to records. It's all up for debate. So fasten your seatbelt and enjoy...it may get a bit bumpy along the way but it's well worth the ride.

Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots - A Racing Odyssey on the Border of Obsession (Paperback): Sam Moses Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots - A Racing Odyssey on the Border of Obsession (Paperback)
Sam Moses; Introduction by Sam Moses
R655 R550 Discovery Miles 5 500 Save R105 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sam Moses, a motorsports writer for "Sports Illustrated," was assigned to go racing and write about what happened. "Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots" is a personal odyssey that peers over the cliff of change and into the pit of obsession. From small-time races to glittery grands prix, it lays bare the greed, lust, and desperation of every driver for time behind the wheel and a faster car. It explains the perfectionism behind taking a turn at the limit and describes the intoxicating thrill of stealing down the Daytona backstraight at nearly two hundred miles an hour. The core of Moses's story takes place in the heartland of stock car racing, there he finds a spot on a team in Ether, North Carolina. The team's owner is a tough Louisiana oil man, its crew chief a lanky, laconic Texan, and its number-one driver a hairy-chested leadfoot who learned fast driving on backwoods Georgia roads, delivering beauty supplies in his Mustang. Crashes echo throughout the tale that follows, five of them the author's own.

For many years this was not the case. This breathtaking collection represents the very best behind-the-scenes work of Geoff Goddard, one of the world's most renowned and respected "old school" motorsports photographers. "Track Pass" records all the greats, from Fangio to Stewart.

Piech worked at Porsche from 1963 to 1972: this book tells us the story. In addition to being head of technology during this period, he was also in charge of motor racing. The Carrera 6 was the first creation of the then 29-year-old engineer. Legendary sports cars followed: 910, 907, 909, 908, and the most thrilling racing car worldwide: the twelve-cylinder Porsche 917. This book provides an in-depth look at the First American Grand Prix (known as the "Grand Prize of the Automobile Club of America"), the Vanderbilt Cup Race and the golden era of early road racing. It explores the feud over international racing sanctioning rights between the two major car clubs of the period, the AAA and ACA. The feud led to Savannah's selection as the home of the American Grand Prix Races from 1908 to 1911 and the 1911 Vanderbilt Cup Race. By examining Savannah's earlier fame in national bicycle racing competitions and its ties to the powerful dynasties who controlled the racing world, the book explains how and why Savannah was chosen. It reveals why the races and course were considered "America's Greatest" by international racing experts of the period and includes many biographies of the drivers who came to Savannah and the colourful stories of other significant people in the industry. The book closes with the coming of motorcycle racing to Savannah, after the major auto races ended. Finally, the book explores the theories and complexities of why Savannah's races and road racing in general came to an end.

Almost unknown when in 1945 he purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its famous race, the Indianapolis 500, Tony Hulman soon became a household name in auto racing circles. He is credited with not only saving the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - shuttered during World War II - from becoming a residential housing development but also with re-invigorating auto racing in the United States. Until his purchase of the Speedway, Hulman had not been involved in auto racing; he was the CEO of Hulman & Company, a wholesale grocer. An astute businessman, Hulman made Clabber Girl Baking Powder a national brand. With the rise of the chain grocery stores, such as Kroger, the wholesale grocery industry was slowly consolidating. Hulman successfully led the reorientation of the family fortunes to include a range of businesses including a beer company, a Coca-Cola franchise, a broadcast empire and real estate and gas companies. The book traces the rise of Hulman & Company from a small wholesale grocer in Terre Haute to a dominant regional business, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis 500 races during Hulman's tenure and his other major investments as well as his philanthropy, particularly to higher education in Terre Haute.

In the nail-biting Brazilian Grand Prix in November 2008, Lewis Hamilton clinched his position as the youngest-ever winner of the Formula One World Championship. A truly remarkable sporting figure who has revolutionized the world of motor racing, his rise through the ranks--from karting to the hotly contested F3 Superprix and onto the F1 podium--has not been straightforward. His career began when he was just six years old when his father--holding down three jobs to support his son's blossoming sport--bought him his first go-cart. The breakthrough came when 10-year-old Lewis met McLaren boss Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony. Two years later, Lewis was signed to McLaren's development program. This book offers behind-the-scenes insight into the intense rivalry between Hamilton and teammate Fernando Alonso that threatened to derail Hamilton's dreams, as well as the low-down on the spy-gate scandal. It also discusses Hamilton's ability to handle the intensity of media coverage and keep his dignity to emerge as the world's top driver.

The story, which has its roots with the racing 'Freres Renault' and their extraordinary technical advances at the end of the nineteenth century, follows the Renault F1 team through its heyday from 1977 to 1997. It begins at the turbulent days of 'The Yellow Teapot' (a popular reference to the groundbreaking yet temperamental cars which kept breaking down) through the team's rise to dominance of the racing world in the 1990s. The story reaches a climax with Villeneuve and Williams-Renault's 1997 triumphs - as this was also in this year that Renault were to take an extended break from the circuits. Many great drivers have graced the team's distinctive yellow-liveried cars, and the team's engines powered the majority of winners during the end of the period covered by the book, including Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.
