The previous book by this same author team, Planning the Play of a
Bridge Hand (978 1897106 51 8), was named the 2010 Book of the Year
by the American Bridge Teachers' Association. Building on the
success of that title, this book gives near-beginners a chance to
practice the principles on which sound declarer play is based:
count your winners, count your losers, make a plan. This is not
just a series of problem hands, however. Each section contains a
brief introduction of its topic, and the ideas are reinforced with
carefully explained solutions and helpful tips throughout.
An Honors Book from Master Point Press. Author Ken Rexford has
developed an intriguing new approach to overcalling 1NT openings
that may revolutionize this area of bridge. If you are unhappy with
Cappelletti, DONT, Brozel, and the like, this book introduces you
to a new approach for tackling the opponent's 1NT opening, with an
entirely new way to handle one or two-suited hands. Can your
current approach tell partner whether you have a strong or a weak
overcall at the two-level? Can you tell partner which suit of your
major-or-a-minor is longer? Can you identify the specific minor
with your major, again at the two-level? All of these are possible
using Ken Rexford's methods. Imagine describing more hands than the
Woolsey defense handles, all with easy but novel methods that fit
(unlike Woolsey) into the ACBL's General Convention Chart! You can
also use these methods to improve your response structure to your
own openings and in other auctions. Imagine hearing a Four Diamond
overcall of partner's Two Clubs opening and being able to describe
any one suit at game or any two-suited holding, all without giving
up a cooperative double. Impossible? Not with this new technique.
Can you show one or both minors and slam interest after a 2NT
opening, and tell partner which specific minor you have, at the
three-level? Yes, using Rexford's methods.
Competition brings many benefits - or so all the politicians say.
Bridge players certainly subscribe to the theory. These days
somewhere between two-thirds and three-quarters of all auctions see
both sides entering the fray. Having a basic knowledge of how to
get into or stay in the bidding is therefore a key attribute for
success at the bridge table. You will often hear rules quoted such
as 'do not double them into the game' or 'leave the five level to
the enemy'. This book covers all the rules likely to help you and,
as usual in this series, you will find plenty of examples both for
and against each one.
Better Bridge with a Better Memory 'goes beyond ... wide-ranging
advice ... and investigates one specific technique in detail. The
method demonstrated is mnemonics, and the author shows how that
approach, already widely in use in naming agreements and providing
clues to their details, can be applied to every phase of the game.
As is often the case in Klinger productions, many examples used to
demonstrate the case at hand have unrelated interesting points, and
the discussions thus provide a welcome variety of topics.' - The
Bridge World.

Just about every bridge player over forty has read Victor Mollo's
Bridge in the Menagerie, a book that is on any list of the all-time
top ten on the game. Towards the end of his life, Mollo continued
to write stories about the same well-loved characters (Hideous Hog,
Rueful Rabbit, Oscar the Owl and the rest), but they appeared in
various magazines around the world, and if you weren't a
subscriber, you didn't get to read them. This is the second
collection of 'lost' Menagerie stories from one of the best-loved
bridge writers who ever lived.
Bridge is the ultimate card game. It is truly a mind sport, as
taxing on the brain as a decathlon is to the body. Bridge for
Beginners is the ultimate introduction. Bridge for Beginners starts
with the basics, even suggesting that the reader remove the jokers
from a full deck of cards. With the basics established, the book
progresses, and by the end, the beginning player will be ready to
go as far as desired, whether it be to social bridge, club bridge,
competitive bridge, or trying out for the national team. Bridge,
and this book, is divided into two parts: the bidding, or auction,
and the play of the cards. Each is examined closely, in a
step-by-step method that greatly simplifies one of the most complex
card games. Chapters include: Absolute Beginners -The Game Unveiled
- The Scoring - The Shape of the Hand - The Bidding-Positions at
the Table - Opening and Responding - Supporting Partner -
Competitive Bidding - Conventions - No Trump Contracts - Suit
Contracts - Finesses - Etiquette - Scoring-Basic Rules With
valuable advice on evaluating hands, working with your partner, and
even spotting cheating, Bridge for Beginners is the only guide a
novice will ever need.

978 189415 447 5).
