Francophone Perspectives of Learning Through Work - Conceptions, Traditions and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Laurent... Francophone Perspectives of Learning Through Work - Conceptions, Traditions and Practices (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Laurent Filliettaz, Stephen Billett
R3,757 R3,496 Discovery Miles 34 960 Save R261 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book generates a comprehensive account of ways in which practice-based learning has been conceptualized in the Francophone context. Learning for occupations, and the educational and practice-based experiences supporting it are the subject of increased interest and attention globally. Governments, professional bodies, workplaces and workers are now looking for experiences that support the initial and ongoing development of occupational capacities. Consequently, more attention is being given to workplaces as sites for this learning. This focus on learning through work has long been emphasised in the Francophone world, which has developed distinct traditions and conceptions of associations between work and learning. These include ergonomics and professional didactics. Yet, whilst being accepted and of long standing in the Francophone world, these conceptions and traditions, and the practices supporting them are little known about or understood in the Anglophone world, which is the dominant medium for scientific and educational discussion. This book addresses this problem through drawing on accounts from France, Switzerland and Canada that make accessible and elaborate these traditions, conceptions and practices through examples of their applications to occupationally related learning. These accounts offer variations and culturally-specific developments of these traditions, but collectively emphasize a preoccupation with how both work and learning need to be understood through situated considerations of persons enacting their work practice. In this way, they offer noteworthy and worthwhile contributions to contemporary global considerations of learning through work.

Teacher Educator International Professional Development as Ren (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Laura Blythe Liu Teacher Educator International Professional Development as Ren (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Laura Blythe Liu
R2,539 R1,773 Discovery Miles 17 730 Save R766 (30%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Teacher-educator international professional development involves personal and professional, research- and practice-oriented, and pragmatic and aesthetic growth. This text encourages teacher educators to explore this work as Ren, or benevolent human beings, in cultivating global professional communities. As faculties engage in Ren as a vital 21st century form of development, new insights may emerge for how to revive and apply this concept in our changing global society. This text begins by discussing evolving concepts of achievement in an era of globalization, contrasting comparative conquest with global notions of relational integrity. Evolving aspects of achievement in 21st century China are also included. The text goes on to explore aspects of 21st century teacher quality and professional development, before presenting a theoretical framework for the international professional development of teacher education faculties as a process of becoming professional individuals, research-based practitioners, and aesthetic engineers. Narrative inquiry, including the aesthetic approach employed in this text, is described as the research method used to explore the development of 15 faculty participants in this text's case study of one teacher education research center at a Chinese university. Findings from the author's two-year immersion at the research site involve three overarching "complementary contrasts," or "tensions held in balance," across the 15 faculties in this study. These tensions included harmonizing (1) community and individuality, (2) adaptability and expression, and (3) authority and compassion. The findings are discussed in light of the original theoretical framework for teacher-educator international professional development by integrating participant interviews, research publications, and further observations into current academic discourse. The text concludes by offering implications for teacher-education practice, research, and policy for China, and other countries including the U.S., and suggests how the findings connect to global academic discourses on teacher-educator professional development across international settings.

"Advances in Business Education & Training" is a Book Series to foster advancement in the field of Business Education and Training. It serves as an international forum for scholarly and state-of-the-art research and development into all aspects of Business Education and Training.

This new volume deals with several aspects of the challenge to design learning in and for a changing world. The first part concerns program development. How to build curricula that are future-proof? Principles to innovate our curricula are identified. It answers the question how we can incorporate the need for change in our thinking about curriculum-development and identify the necessary elements to incorporate in our curricula. The second part focuses on the increasing diversity of students and employees within our schools and organizations, in terms of culture, language, and perception of ability, gifts, and talents. This offers a range of opportunities, but at the same time can possibly jeopardize some processes that are taken for granted. Chapters in this part analyze the processes that play a crucial role in dealing with this diversity and identify educational practices that can help to harvest the potential that lies within this diversity. The third part of this book digs further into the possibilities that are opened up by the implementation of ICT-support in our learning environments. E-learning provides tools to adapt these environments to the needs of an increasingly diverse student-population. In the last part we focus specifically on the workplace and how learning can be designed in such a way that employees are equipped for a shifting workplace. On the one hand it is looked how training can affect performance in the workplace. Does learning transfer to the work environment? On the other hand it is questioned how one can design affordances to trigger learning in the workplace.

Professional Learning in the Work Place for International Students - Exploring Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... Professional Learning in the Work Place for International Students - Exploring Theory and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Georgina Barton, Kay Hartwig
R3,445 Discovery Miles 34 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book shares a range of examples where international students have undertaken a work placement, practicum, internship or participated in work integrated learning. Contributions reflect on the successes and challenges that this particularly diverse group of students experience when undertaking work placement programs in a variety of disciplines, such as education, engineering and health. The book explores these experiences via three main conceptualisations: 1. Internationalisation and interculturalisation - including the diversity of international student cohorts and the associated policy, practices and assessment related to international students in higher education; 2. Multi-socialisation - of international students with a focus on new cultural contexts, professional learning and disciplinarity; and 3. Reflection and reflective practice - acknowledging that for improvement and change to occur those involved need to reflect on current and possible future practice. A working model of effective practice is introduced which can inform prospective international students, their mentors/supervisors, work placement coordinators and other relevant university staff.

Nurse Practitioners and the Performance of Professional Competency - Accomplishing Patient-centered Care (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Nurse Practitioners and the Performance of Professional Competency - Accomplishing Patient-centered Care (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Staci Defibaugh
R1,718 Discovery Miles 17 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the interactional practices of nurse practitioners (NPs) and the delivery of health care in the US. The author takes a discourse analytic approach, examining the linguistic resources that NPs employ in their interactions with patients. These linguistic features are connected to the concept of professional competency with specific focus on the enactment of the patient-centered approach. Analytic focus is placed on how NPs address organizational responsibilities during medical visits with patients, the form and function of patient education, the use of indirect speech, and the role that small talk plays in health care encounters. The book explores the understudied professional field of nurse practitioners and examines their linguistic practices with an eye on crossing disciplinary boundaries, integrating research from linguistics, discourse analysis and health communication. It will appeal to those interested in medical discourse analysis and health communication, as well as applied linguistics scholars.

Employability via Higher Education: Sustainability as Scholarship (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Alice Diver Employability via Higher Education: Sustainability as Scholarship (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Alice Diver
R4,115 Discovery Miles 41 150 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book discusses the topic of graduate employability from the premise that in this era of 'massification,' economic austerity, and political uncertainties, higher education (HE) no longer guarantees a clear 'work place advantage.' Divided into three sections, the book offers theoretical and philosophical discourses on the 'HE quandary,' whilst taking into account - and critiquing - political, temporal, and national contexts. It culminates in an investigation into specific discipline areas. It offers insights into the way that institutions, decision-makers, academics, and professional support staff can work together towards ensuring that our graduates are able to cope with the varied demands and challenges of modern job markets. It harnesses arguments and reflections on the breadth and depth of the functions of HE, such as social transformation, promoting principles of social justice, and providing opportunities. It grounds these in a triadic model for enhancing student engagement and holistic learning, namely, the emotional, cognitive, and behavioural aspects. As an anthology, it is forward-gazing in terms of the sustainability debate, whilst still offering evidence-based, research-grounded, practical suggestions to readers looking for tips and tools of the trade.

Teaching Reflective Learning in Higher Education - A Systematic Approach Using Pedagogic Patterns (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Mary... Teaching Reflective Learning in Higher Education - A Systematic Approach Using Pedagogic Patterns (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Mary Elizabeth Ryan
R3,913 Discovery Miles 39 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is about understanding the nature and application of reflection in higher education. It provides a theoretical model to guide the implementation of reflective learning and reflective practice across multiple disciplines and international contexts in higher education. The book presents research into the ways in which reflection is both considered and implemented in different ways across different professional disciplines, while maintaining a common purpose to transform and improve learning and/or practice. The Readers will find this book is innovative and new in three key ways. Firstly, in its holistic theorisation of reflection within the pedagogic field of higher education; Secondly, in conceptualising reflection in different modes to achieve specific purposes in different disciplines; and finally, in providing conceptual guidance for embedding reflective learning and reflective practice in a systematic way across whole programmes, faculties or institutions in higher education. The book considers important contextual factors that influence the teaching of forms and methods of reflection. It provides a functional analysis of multiple modes of reflection, including written, oral, visual, auditory, and embodied forms. Empirical chapters analyse the application of these modes across disciplines and at different stages of a programme. The theoretical model accounts for students' stage of development in the disciplinary field, along with progressive and cyclical levels of higher order thinking, and learning and professional practice that are expected within different disciplines and professional fields. Secondly, in conceptualising reflection in different modes to achieve specific purposes in different disciplines. It provides a functional analysis of multiple modes of reflection, including written, oral, visual, auditory, and embodied forms. Empirical chapters analyse the application of these modes across disciplines and at different stages of a programme in terms of demonstrating levels of reflection. The book includes images, diagrams and different text forms to support the creative applications of reflection. And thirdly, the book is innovative in providing conceptual guidance for embedding reflective learning and reflective practice systematically across whole programmes, faculties or institutions in higher education contexts across the world.

Assessing Competence in Professional Performance across Disciplines and Professions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Paul F. Wimmers,... Assessing Competence in Professional Performance across Disciplines and Professions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Paul F. Wimmers, Marcia Mentkowski
R4,320 Discovery Miles 43 200 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the challenges of cross-professional comparisons and proposes new forms of performance assessment to be used in professions education. It addresses how complex issues are learned and assessed across and within different disciplines and professions in order to move the process of "performance assessment for learning" to the next level. In order to be better equipped to cope with increasing complexity, change and diversity in professional education and performance assessment, administrators and educators will engage in crucial systems thinking. The main question discussed by the book is how the required competence in the performance of students can be assessed during their professional education at both undergraduate and graduate levels. To answer this question, the book identifies unresolved issues and clarifies conceptual elements for performance assessment. It reviews the development of constructs that cross disciplines and professions such as critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and problem solving. It discusses what it means to instruct and assess students within their own domain of study and across various roles in multiple contexts, but also what it means to instruct and assess students across domains of study in order to judge integration and transfer of learning outcomes. Finally, the book examines what it takes for administrators and educators to develop competence in assessment, such as reliably judging student work in relation to criteria from multiple sources. "... the co-editors of this volume, Marcia Mentkowski and Paul F. Wimmers, are associated with two institutions whose characters are so intimately associated with the insight that assessment must be integrated with curriculum and instructional program if it is to become a powerful influence on the educational process ..." Lee Shulman, Stanford University
