Amanda Gutierrez, Jillian Fox, Colette Alexander
R3,801 Discovery Miles 38 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores how educators are proactively working to reclaim teacher professionalism by engaging in exemplary practice and promoting quality education for all. It examines voices in contemporary Australian teacher education and how professionalism can contribute to achieving the multiplicity of purposes in education. The work of contemporary teachers and teacher educators, and perceptions about this work, have changed significantly. In recent times, governments have identified key issues linked to the quality of teachers, as presented in multiple inquiries, creating shifts in public policy and increasing regulation. Educators must work towards improving public and policy maker perceptions of teaching as a profession. Teacher educators make an important contribution in engaging in ongoing scholarship and debate that examine research and practice and speak back to managerial discourses on professionalism. It is through this work that educators shape and re-shape understanding of what it means to be a professional.

Stephen Billett, Janice Orrell, Denise Jackson, Faith Valencia-Forrester
R4,050 Discovery Miles 40 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This edited volume offers a range of insights about, practices of, and findings associated with, enrichening higher education students' learning by their engagement in educational processes during and after the completion of their work integrated education experiences. That is, using post-practicum intervention to augment and enrich those learning experiences. The collected contributions here draw on the processes of trialling and evaluating educational processes that aimed to enrich the work integrated education experiences for purposes of improving students' understandings, abilities to address workplace and occupational requirements. These processes and findings from these processes across a range of disciplinary fields including pharmacy, psychology, physiotherapy, service learning, occupational therapy, journalism and business students education speak directly to educators in both workplace and educational settings across a range of occupational sectors. These messages, which arise from educators and practitioners enacting and evaluating these interventions, offer practical suggestions as well as conceptual advances. The reach of the accounts of processes, findings and evaluations is not restricted to the occupational fields in which the interventions occurred. The lessons provided through this edited volume are intended to inform how post-practicum interventions might be enacted across a range of occupational studies.

Professionals in Organizations - Debunking a Myth (Hardcover): Mary E. Guy Professionals in Organizations - Debunking a Myth (Hardcover)
Mary E. Guy
R2,799 R2,532 Discovery Miles 25 320 Save R267 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Organization theories have given only brief attention to the role of professionals in the workplace. When mentioned, it is posited that major differences exist between professionals and nonprofessionals owing their loyalties more to their discipline/profession than to the organization for which they work. For this reason professionals are thought to be a breed apart who must be treated differently by administrators. Guy, basing her conclusions on studies conducted at two hospitals, shows that these assumptions are not completely true. She finds that the urgency of the task at hand determines priorities much more than does professional identification. She also found that many professionals within an organization had as much in common with staff from other disciplines as they had with professional colleagues. These findings have important ramifications for managers, program planners and researchers in organizational behavior.

Equity-Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions - An American Imperative (Hardcover): Erik M. Hines, Laura Owen Equity-Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions - An American Imperative (Hardcover)
Erik M. Hines, Laura Owen
R3,182 Discovery Miles 31 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama believes that every individual should have some type of postsecondary education or training beyond high school to achieve economic and personal success (Reach Higher Initiative, Better Make Room, 2019). Educational attainment (e.g., a high school diploma, college degree, or postsecondary training) provides career opportunities for advancement into leadership positions and benefits such as health insurance and retirement (Heckman, 2000). Additionally, an individual with a college degree can make over one million dollars more over a lifetime in salary than someone with a high school diploma (Carnevale, Cheah, & Hanson, 2015). Acquiring a college degree can lead to employment opportunities and is considered an asset in the U.S. economy (Washington, 2010). However, certain populations encounter barriers to attaining an education, particularly a postsecondary education, leading to a disparity in receiving the aforementioned benefits. Some of these populations include African American students, LGBTQ students, and students with disabilities. There is a dearth of information and research on providing guidance on implementation, research, and best practices in equity-based career development, college readiness, and successful postsecondary transitions for minoritized, at risk, or vulnerable populations. The editors of this volume invited authors with research and practice expertise around various student populations in preparing them for college and career readiness as well as postsecondary transitions. This book is the first of its kind to discuss career development and postsecondary transitions from an access and equity perspective. Further, this text serves as a call to action to ensure the United States' most vulnerable populations has an opportunity to successfully transition into multiple postsecondary options after high school.

Work-Integrated Learning Case Studies in Teacher Education - Epistemic Reflexivity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Matthew Winslade,... Work-Integrated Learning Case Studies in Teacher Education - Epistemic Reflexivity (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Matthew Winslade, Tony Loughland, Michelle J. Eady
R4,317 Discovery Miles 43 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the emerging area of partner-driven work-integrated learning inclusive of university or industry stakeholder development, and the integration of these two major stakeholders. It explores the significant interrelationship between university and school needs in this area of research. It uses a cross-institutional approach and focuses on local communities that educational providers interact with, to highlight and discuss the issues identified in various case studies. By doing so, this book aims to create a community of practice that explores work-integrated learning from an integrated stakeholder perspective, and develops a working model to extend existing understanding in this area through integrating the ideas explored in the various chapters.

Researchers at Risk - Precarity, Jeopardy and Uncertainty in Academia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Deborah L. Mulligan, Patrick... Researchers at Risk - Precarity, Jeopardy and Uncertainty in Academia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Deborah L. Mulligan, Patrick Alan Danaher
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the phenomenon of researchers at risk: that is, the experiences of scholars whose research topics require them to engage with diverse kind of dangers, uncertainties or vulnerabilities. This risk may derive from working with variously marginalised individuals or groups, or from being members of such groups themselves. At other times, the risk relates to particular economic or environmental conditions, or political forces influencing the specific research fields in which they operate. This book argues for the need to reconceptualise - and thereby to reimagine - the phenomenon of researchers' risks, particularly when those risks are perceived to affect, and even to threaten the researchers. Drawing on a diverse and global range case studies including Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Baluchistan, Cyprus, and Germany, the chapters call for the need to identify effective strategies for engaging proactively with these risks to address precarity, jeopardy and uncertainty.

Assessment and Evaluation of Developmental Learning - Qualitative Individual Assessment and Evaluation Models (Hardcover, New):... Assessment and Evaluation of Developmental Learning - Qualitative Individual Assessment and Evaluation Models (Hardcover, New)
Robert M. Hashway
R2,815 R2,549 Discovery Miles 25 490 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the technological demands of a rapidly changing society impact the training needs of the industrial sector, mechanisms for identifying learner strengths as well as weaknesses are needed to optimize the training process. In addition, there is a need for processes for evaluating the effectiveness of programs focused on the developmental needs of learners. Traditional measures, such as norm-referenced paradigms, do not meet the criteria established for developmental assessment. This book will provide the technical details needed to construct instruments as well as evaluate programs using a recently developed technique called item response theory, which meets the criteria for developmental assessment.

Kate Hoskins
R2,901 Discovery Miles 29 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates how policy, family background, social class, gender and ethnicity influence young people's post-16 and post-18 employment and education access. It draws on existing literature, alongside new data gathered from a case study in a UK state secondary school, to examine how policy changes to the financial arrangements for further and higher education and the changing youth employment landscape have had an impact on young people's choices and pathways. Hoskins explores a number of topics, including the role of identity in young people's decision-making; the impact of changes to young people's financial arrangements, such as cuts to the Education Maintenance Allowance and increased university fees; and the influence of support from parents and teachers. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of Education and Sociology.

Creating and Sustaining a Collaborative Mentorship Team - A Handbook for Practice and Research (Hardcover): Dianne M. Gut, Beth... Creating and Sustaining a Collaborative Mentorship Team - A Handbook for Practice and Research (Hardcover)
Dianne M. Gut, Beth J. VanDerveer, M. Barbara Trube, Pamela C. Beam; Series edited by Frances K. Kochan
R2,486 Discovery Miles 24 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In response to changes in the workforce, scholars are calling for mentoring that is more fluid, flexible, and responsive to the needs of diverse groups of individuals, whether culturally (Kochan & Pascarelli, 2012; Kochan, Searby, George, & Mitchell Edge, 2015) or intergenerationally (Thorpe, 2012) diverse. With these changes, there are greater demands for intergenerational and intercultural collaboration and mentoring. One response to these changes is to take a more collaborative, interactive, and transformational approach to mentoring. In response, this book provides a model for collaborative mentoring, based on best-practice, grounded in theory and research, and framed by the Dynamic Model of Collaborative Mentorship. Each chapter provides a description of one of the five components of the mentoring model which are grounded in theory and include: agency, values, engagement, patterns, and roles. Individual chapters provide resources, prompts and questions to guide reflection, and suggested readings. This book is authored by four individuals who work, research, and write as a team. The book itself is the product of their mentoring research as well as their mentoring practice in action. It is current and timely, focusing on team processes which are collaborative, dynamic, reflective, and continuously developing and evolving.

Identity-Trajectories of Early Career Researchers - Unpacking the Post-PhD Experience (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Lynn McAlpine,... Identity-Trajectories of Early Career Researchers - Unpacking the Post-PhD Experience (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Lynn McAlpine, Cheryl Amundsen
R2,931 Discovery Miles 29 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book asks how we can make sense of career paths for PhD graduates, something that has rarely been systematically studied. It offers a coherent synthesis of the empirically-based insights that arose from the experiences of 48 early career researchers, who were participants in a 10-year qualitative longitudinal research program. The book has the power to inform other researchers' conceptual and methodological approaches to the study of post-PhD career trajectories. The authors draw on the conceptual lens of 'identity-trajectory', which emerged from their research program, to examine the decision-making processes underpinning the careers of PhD graduates, whether contingent researchers and teachers, assistant professors within the academy or professionals elsewhere. The book highlights the role of personal agency in negotiating academic and non-academic work and careers within broader personal lives. It will be compelling reading for researchers and students working in the areas of Education and Sociology, particularly those with an interest in examining career development and decision-making.

Industrial Revolution 4.0, Tech Giants, and Digitized Societies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Tai-Wei Lim Industrial Revolution 4.0, Tech Giants, and Digitized Societies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Tai-Wei Lim
R2,092 Discovery Miles 20 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Industry 4.0 explores the emergence of disruptive digital technologies such as robotics, blockchain, nanotechnology and 3D printing and their impact on human lives and jobs in globalized 21st century societies. Incorporating a cutting edge area studies perspective, it considers the challenges and long term implications of the rise of 'Tech Giants' such as Alibaba, Google and Baidu through the lens of past industrial revolutions, looking back at the transformative technologies and industrial developments - the steam engine, electrification, telegraph, mass production, and the rise of digital technology - upon which the modern world was built. It investigates the mirror profiles of the world's largest tech companies in the US and China (Baidu and Google, Alibaba and Amazon, Wechat and Facebook) and provides a unique comparison of Tech Giants with 19th century colonial empires and monopolistic trading companies in terms of political-economic dominance. A key tool for instructors and students focused on courses on Technological History, Digital Technology and Cultures, New Media, Digital Ethics and China studies, this book provides practical guidance on how readers can equip themselves to face key workplace and societal challenges in a virtually interconnected world shaped by Tech Giant monopoly.

Re-envisioning the MLS - Perspectives on the Future of Library and Information Science Education (Hardcover): Johnna Percell,... Re-envisioning the MLS - Perspectives on the Future of Library and Information Science Education (Hardcover)
Johnna Percell, Lindsay C. Sarin, Paul T. Jaeger, John Carlo Bertot
R2,981 Discovery Miles 29 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the heart of any discussion about the future of libraries is the future of librarians-and how well our instructional programs, especially the Master of Library Science (MLS) degree, prepare them for their careers. Building on the Re-envisioning the MLS initiative from the University of Maryland's iSchool and the Information Policy & Access Center (iPAC), this book continues the critical conversations around preparing future librarians. Library and information science (LIS) programs are the foundation of librarianship, and their design requires input from everyone in the field-from academics designing programs and courses, to practitioners reflecting on how prepared (or unprepared) they are to serve their communities, to hiring authorities considering qualifications of candidates. The second installment of this two-part volume explores many of the challenges and opportunities inherent in the future of the MLS degree, including the changing nature of the communities that libraries serve and how LIS education should address these changes, how archival training must accommodate big data, the specialized skill sets librarians need on the job, and how best to prepare librarians for their role as educators. These conversations will never be fully resolved, as LIS education must continue to evolve to ensure the efficacy of libraries and the librarians at the heart of the work.

Centers of Excellence - Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century (Hardcover): Darrel W. Staat Centers of Excellence - Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
Darrel W. Staat
R1,881 Discovery Miles 18 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are many Centers of Excellence (COE) in community colleges and universities in the United States. Presently, a number of these provide approximately an extra year beyond various existing degrees. Most of these COEs deal with a variety of training and educational needs and work directly with the appropriate business communities. They provide students with additional training and expertise beyond the normal degree programs. This gives graduates specific educational training on the latest developments in their area of expertise, which makes them more employable and sought out for by businesses. Centers of Excellence: Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century informs institutions of higher education about COEs that currently exist so interested administrators may initiate Centers of Excellence that are needed in their service areas. Furthermore, the information in this book will assist community colleges and universities in learning how a Center is activated, funded, and supported. The Centers are valuable to students, higher education institutions, and the business community.

Rural Teacher Education - Connecting Land and People (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Michael Corbett, Dianne Gereluk Rural Teacher Education - Connecting Land and People (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Michael Corbett, Dianne Gereluk
R4,054 Discovery Miles 40 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines challenges associated with the education of teachers in and for rural places. It offers a new perspective with respect to how Canadian educators are shifting the conversation toward a hopeful discourse concerning how educators can foster meaningful rural learning environments, which will contribute to building stronger rural communities and regions. A central focus of the book is emerging reconceptualization of education, place and indigeneity in Canadian education in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Though the challenge of addressing rural teaching and learning lies partly in the nuances and complexities of unique places, there are also common threads that affect virtually all communities in rural, regional and remote educational, cultural, economic, and social geographies. Chapters in this collection provide current research in Canadian rural education including examples and stories from the field - contributed by teachers, administrators, and superintendents - on the challenges and creative opportunities that they have discovered in their own rural context, giving hope and inspiration for what is possible. The book will appeal to all readers interested in rural education and teacher education, as well as to those concerned with educational inequality and indigenous education.

Between School and Work - New Perspectives on Transfer and Boundary-Crossing (Hardcover, Library): Terttu Tuomi-Grohn, Yrjo... Between School and Work - New Perspectives on Transfer and Boundary-Crossing (Hardcover, Library)
Terttu Tuomi-Grohn, Yrjo Engestrom
R3,047 Discovery Miles 30 470 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book opens up new theoretical perspectives and practical possibilities to analyze the learning opportunities emerging in the transitional zones between educational institutions and workplaces. International contributors draw on a range of ideas developed within constructivistic, socio-cultural and activity theory and focus in different ways on the processes of transition, transfer and boundary crossing as central to learning, especially in vocational and professional education contexts.
The book begins with four chapters which locate the renewed interest in transfer and the emerging interest in boundary crossing in the context of knowledge society in terms of the following (a) the historical development of learning theories, (b) the theoretical advances made in socio-cultural approaches as regards learning, transfer and boundary crossing, and (c) sociological approaches to links between school and workplace learning. Part II contains seven chapters that present studies on learning and transfer in different domains of vocational and professional education. Part III presents three studies that describe and analyze learning in workplaces. The chapters of these three parts report on a range of empirical and developmental studies which have developed new 'tools for learning and transfer' in vocational education. The book ends with an epilogue consisting of a critical reflection on the earlier chapters in relation to how they approach two key transfer issues - the relationship between school knowledge and the knowledge acquired in working life, and the relationship between transfer and boundary crossing at the individual and collective levels.
The chapters of this book are basedon original research undertaken by members and invited experts of a European COST Action A 11 Working Group 2 which includes researchers from twelve different countries.

Elaborating Professionalism - Studies in Practice and Theory (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Clive Kanes Elaborating Professionalism - Studies in Practice and Theory (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Clive Kanes
R2,768 Discovery Miles 27 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What are the future possibilities for the standing of professional practice as it faces growingly problematic markets for services, complex demands for managerial accountability and control, and problematic circumstances and expectations in its ethical and self-regulative governance? New sources of inspiration may be needed if professionalism is to be either a viable or desirable form for the social organisation of work in the coming years of potentially deep economic and social change. Set in the UK, South Africa, Australia and the USA, the empirical studies included elaborate problematic situations of professional practice concerning issues of identity and knowledge. The theoretical studies explore the notion of generic processes; elaborate the plurality of notions of professional practice; theorise the hybridisation witnessed in inter-professional and cross-disciplinary team work; and outline new theoretical departures relating to these. Elaborating professionalism also raises important methodological issues relating to professionalism as ethical practice. The book offers valuable resources to enrich practice, and provokes thought and new ideas about professionalism.
