The Essential Guide to Writing History Essays (Hardcover): Katherine Pickering Antonova The Essential Guide to Writing History Essays (Hardcover)
Katherine Pickering Antonova
R2,700 Discovery Miles 27 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Essential Guide to Writing History Essays is a step-by-step guide to the typical assignments of any undergraduate or master's-level history program in North America. Effective writing is a process of discovery, achieved through the continual act of making choices-what to include or exclude, how to order elements, and which style to choose-each according to the author's goals and the intended audience. The book integrates reading and specialized vocabulary with writing and revision and addresses the evolving nature of digital media while teaching the terms and logic of traditional sources and the reasons for citation as well as the styles. This approach to writing not only helps students produce an effective final product and build from writing simple, short essays to completing a full research thesis, it also teaches students why and how an essay is effective, empowering them to approach new writing challenges with the freedom to find their own voice.

Ensuring Quality in Professional Education Volume II - Engineering Pedagogy and International Knowledge Structures (Hardcover,... Ensuring Quality in Professional Education Volume II - Engineering Pedagogy and International Knowledge Structures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Karen Trimmer, Tara Newman, Fernando F. Padro
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines quality teaching in professional education in the fields of engineering and international knowledge structures. The second of a two-volume series, the editors and contributors structure the book around case studies which highlight the elements constituting good practice within professional education. While there is no one specific route to prepare well-qualified professionals, this volume explores the decisions the academics responsible for delivering this education make to ensure quality curricula. Ultimately, the key to effective preparations rests with the value employers place on the focus, emphasis and balance between the academic and practical in relation to their own expectations for skills that graduates must have. The second volume in this collection will appeal to students and scholars of professional pedagogy, and engineering pedagogy more specifically.

Jim Crow's Pink Slip - The Untold Story of Black Principal and Teacher Leadership (Paperback): Leslie T. Fenwick Jim Crow's Pink Slip - The Untold Story of Black Principal and Teacher Leadership (Paperback)
Leslie T. Fenwick
R1,331 R836 Discovery Miles 8 360 Save R495 (37%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Jim Crow's Pink Slip exposes the decades-long repercussions of a too-little-known result of the Brown v. Board of Education decision: the systematic dismissal of Black educators from public schools. In 1954, the Supreme Court's Brown decision ended segregated schooling in the United States, but regrettably, as documented in congressional testimony and transcripts, it also ended the careers of a generation of highly qualified and credentialed Black teachers and principals. In the Deep South and northern border states over the decades following Brown, Black schools closed and Black educators were displaced en masse. As educational policy and leadership expert Leslie T. Fenwick deftly demonstrates, the effects of these changes stand contrary to the democratic ideals of an integrated society and equal educational opportunity for all students. Jim Crow's Pink Slip provides a trenchant account of how tremendous the loss to the US educational system was and continues to be. Despite efforts of the NAACP and other civil rights organizations, congressional hearings during the Nixon administration, and antiracist activism of the 21st century, the problems fomented after Brown persist. The book draws the line from the past injustices to problems that the educational system grapples with today: not simply the underrepresentation of Black teachers and principals, but also salary reductions, teacher shortages, and systemic inequality. By engaging with the complicated legacy of the Brown decision, Fenwick illuminates a crucial chapter in education history. She also offers policy prescriptions aimed at correcting the course of US education, supporting educators, and improving workforce quality and diversity.

Amanda Gutierrez, Jillian Fox, Colette Alexander
R3,801 Discovery Miles 38 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores how educators are proactively working to reclaim teacher professionalism by engaging in exemplary practice and promoting quality education for all. It examines voices in contemporary Australian teacher education and how professionalism can contribute to achieving the multiplicity of purposes in education. The work of contemporary teachers and teacher educators, and perceptions about this work, have changed significantly. In recent times, governments have identified key issues linked to the quality of teachers, as presented in multiple inquiries, creating shifts in public policy and increasing regulation. Educators must work towards improving public and policy maker perceptions of teaching as a profession. Teacher educators make an important contribution in engaging in ongoing scholarship and debate that examine research and practice and speak back to managerial discourses on professionalism. It is through this work that educators shape and re-shape understanding of what it means to be a professional.

Issues in Career Development (Hardcover, illustrated Edition): John Patrick, Grafton Eliason, Donald L. Thompson Issues in Career Development (Hardcover, illustrated Edition)
John Patrick, Grafton Eliason, Donald L. Thompson
R2,544 Discovery Miles 25 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The primary purpose of Issues in Career Development is to provide a broad look at the field of career development including career counseling, career guidance, career education, and general career development programming, and to examine some of the field's major themes, approaches, and assumptions. We will examine both knowledge from the past as well as what the future might bring. We will bring together a variety of experts/authors from the area of interest and try to provide readers with a framework for action based on the best available research information. The concept of career development is in a period of dramatic transition resulting from equally dramatic changes in the labor market and the socio-cultural environment. Work has a different meaning today than it had one hundred, fifty, or even ten years ago. Career is now much more tightly interwoven with life, and lifestyle. In that context, career development can only be understood when viewed as a part of the broader concept of human development. Past research clearly indicates that interventions can and do have a significant impact on a variety of career development areas (e.g. job satisfaction, worker productivity), however, there are significant questions that are yet to be answered, and given the changing career/work landscape, significant questions that are not yet known. Particular areas of interest for the future relate to the changing nature of the labor market, gender and minority group issues, socio-economic trends, etc. Historically, much of the research on career development has assumed that psychological factors play the major role in a person's career choices. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that the environment plays a much bigger role than previously assumed. This monograph series will examine these and other relevant issues in the years to come.

Researchers at Risk - Precarity, Jeopardy and Uncertainty in Academia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Deborah L. Mulligan, Patrick... Researchers at Risk - Precarity, Jeopardy and Uncertainty in Academia (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Deborah L. Mulligan, Patrick Alan Danaher
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the phenomenon of researchers at risk: that is, the experiences of scholars whose research topics require them to engage with diverse kind of dangers, uncertainties or vulnerabilities. This risk may derive from working with variously marginalised individuals or groups, or from being members of such groups themselves. At other times, the risk relates to particular economic or environmental conditions, or political forces influencing the specific research fields in which they operate. This book argues for the need to reconceptualise - and thereby to reimagine - the phenomenon of researchers' risks, particularly when those risks are perceived to affect, and even to threaten the researchers. Drawing on a diverse and global range case studies including Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Baluchistan, Cyprus, and Germany, the chapters call for the need to identify effective strategies for engaging proactively with these risks to address precarity, jeopardy and uncertainty.

Professionals in Organizations - Debunking a Myth (Hardcover): Mary E. Guy Professionals in Organizations - Debunking a Myth (Hardcover)
Mary E. Guy
R2,552 Discovery Miles 25 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Organization theories have given only brief attention to the role of professionals in the workplace. When mentioned, it is posited that major differences exist between professionals and nonprofessionals owing their loyalties more to their discipline/profession than to the organization for which they work. For this reason professionals are thought to be a breed apart who must be treated differently by administrators. Guy, basing her conclusions on studies conducted at two hospitals, shows that these assumptions are not completely true. She finds that the urgency of the task at hand determines priorities much more than does professional identification. She also found that many professionals within an organization had as much in common with staff from other disciplines as they had with professional colleagues. These findings have important ramifications for managers, program planners and researchers in organizational behavior.

Kate Hoskins
R2,901 Discovery Miles 29 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates how policy, family background, social class, gender and ethnicity influence young people's post-16 and post-18 employment and education access. It draws on existing literature, alongside new data gathered from a case study in a UK state secondary school, to examine how policy changes to the financial arrangements for further and higher education and the changing youth employment landscape have had an impact on young people's choices and pathways. Hoskins explores a number of topics, including the role of identity in young people's decision-making; the impact of changes to young people's financial arrangements, such as cuts to the Education Maintenance Allowance and increased university fees; and the influence of support from parents and teachers. The book will be of interest to students and researchers of Education and Sociology.

Assessment and Evaluation of Developmental Learning - Qualitative Individual Assessment and Evaluation Models (Hardcover, New):... Assessment and Evaluation of Developmental Learning - Qualitative Individual Assessment and Evaluation Models (Hardcover, New)
Robert M. Hashway
R2,592 Discovery Miles 25 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As the technological demands of a rapidly changing society impact the training needs of the industrial sector, mechanisms for identifying learner strengths as well as weaknesses are needed to optimize the training process. In addition, there is a need for processes for evaluating the effectiveness of programs focused on the developmental needs of learners. Traditional measures, such as norm-referenced paradigms, do not meet the criteria established for developmental assessment. This book will provide the technical details needed to construct instruments as well as evaluate programs using a recently developed technique called item response theory, which meets the criteria for developmental assessment.

Lynn McAlpine, Cheryl Amundsen
R2,931 Discovery Miles 29 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book asks how we can make sense of career paths for PhD graduates, something that has rarely been systematically studied. It offers a coherent synthesis of the empirically-based insights that arose from the experiences of 48 early career researchers, who were participants in a 10-year qualitative longitudinal research program. The book has the power to inform other researchers' conceptual and methodological approaches to the study of post-PhD career trajectories. The authors draw on the conceptual lens of 'identity-trajectory', which emerged from their research program, to examine the decision-making processes underpinning the careers of PhD graduates, whether contingent researchers and teachers, assistant professors within the academy or professionals elsewhere. The book highlights the role of personal agency in negotiating academic and non-academic work and careers within broader personal lives. It will be compelling reading for researchers and students working in the areas of Education and Sociology, particularly those with an interest in examining career development and decision-making.

Matthew Winslade, Tony Loughland, Michelle J. Eady
R4,317 Discovery Miles 43 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the emerging area of partner-driven work-integrated learning inclusive of university or industry stakeholder development, and the integration of these two major stakeholders. It explores the significant interrelationship between university and school needs in this area of research. It uses a cross-institutional approach and focuses on local communities that educational providers interact with, to highlight and discuss the issues identified in various case studies. By doing so, this book aims to create a community of practice that explores work-integrated learning from an integrated stakeholder perspective, and develops a working model to extend existing understanding in this area through integrating the ideas explored in the various chapters.

Centers of Excellence - Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century (Hardcover): Darrel W. Staat Centers of Excellence - Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century (Hardcover)
Darrel W. Staat
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are many Centers of Excellence (COE) in community colleges and universities in the United States. Presently, a number of these provide approximately an extra year beyond various existing degrees. Most of these COEs deal with a variety of training and educational needs and work directly with the appropriate business communities. They provide students with additional training and expertise beyond the normal degree programs. This gives graduates specific educational training on the latest developments in their area of expertise, which makes them more employable and sought out for by businesses. Centers of Excellence: Niche Methods to Improve Higher Education in the 21st Century informs institutions of higher education about COEs that currently exist so interested administrators may initiate Centers of Excellence that are needed in their service areas. Furthermore, the information in this book will assist community colleges and universities in learning how a Center is activated, funded, and supported. The Centers are valuable to students, higher education institutions, and the business community.
