This book synthesizes theoretical perspectives, empirical evidence
and practical strategies for improving teacher education in
chemistry. Many chemistry lessons involve mindless "cookbook"
activities where students and teachers follow recipes, memorise
formulae and recall facts without understanding how and why
knowledge in chemistry works. Capitalising on traditionally
disparate areas of research, the book investigates how to make
chemistry education more meaningful for both students and teachers.
It provides an example of how theory and practice in chemistry
education can be bridged. It reflects on the nature of knowledge in
chemistry by referring to theoretical perspectives from philosophy
of chemistry. It draws on empirical evidence from research on
teacher education, and illustrates concrete strategies and
resources that can be used by teacher educators. The book describes
the design and implementation of an innovative teacher education
project to show the impact of an intervention on pre-service
teachers. The book shows how, by making use of visual
representations and analogies, the project makes some fairly
abstract and complex ideas accessible to pre-service teachers.

This book is designed for those who have had no more than a brief
introduction to organic chemistry and who require a broad
understanding of the subject. The book is in two parts. In Part I,
reaction mechanism is set in its wider context of the basic
principles and concepts that underlie chemical reactions: chemical
thermodynamics, structural theory, theories of reaction kinetics,
mechanism itself and stereochemistry. In Part II these principles
and concepts are applied to the formation of particular types of
bonds, groupings, and compounds. The final chapter in Part II
describes the planning and detailed execution of the multi-step
syntheses of several complex, naturally occurring compounds.

The objective of the Springer Handbook of Enzymes is to provide, in concise form, data on enzymes that have been sufficiently well characterized. Data sheets are arranged in their EC-Number sequence. Each volume comprises one enzyme class, sometimes the enzyme classes have to be divided into several volumes. Considerable progress has been made in enzymology since the publication of the first edition (published as "Enzyme Handbook"): many enzymes are newly classified or reclassified. In the 2nd edition each entry is correlated with references and one or more source organisms. New datafields are created: "application" and "engineering" (for the properties of enzymes where the sequence has been changed). Altogether the amount of data has doubled so that the 2nd edition will consist of approx. 25 volumes. This collection is an indispensable source of information for researchers in biochemistry, biotechnology, organic and analytical chemistry, and food sciences.
This book has KS3 Chemistry (ages 11-14) completely covered, with a
superb blend of crystal-clear study notes and indispensable
practice questions for every topic. It's ideal for students working
at a higher level. In addition to the notes and questions, there's
a section covering everything students need to know about 'Working
Scientifically'. Answers to the practice questions are available in
a separate book (9781782941088).
