Internationally acclaimed theologian Graham Ward is well known for
his thoughtful engagement with postmodernism. This volume, the
fourth in The Church and Postmodern Culture series, offers an
engaging look at the political nature of the postmodern world.
In the first section, "The World," Ward considers "the signs of the
times" and the political nature of contemporary postmodernism. It
is imperative, he suggests, that the church understand the world to
be able to address it thoughtfully. In the second section, "The
Church," he turns to practical application, examining what faithful
discipleship looks like within this political context. Clergy and
those interested in the emerging church will find this work
particularly thought provoking.

In celebration of the 2021 visit to the University of Notre Dame by
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, as well as the thirtieth
anniversary of his election, this groundbreaking volume gathers
together and introduces eleven important joint statements from the
patriarch, addressing diverse topics from climate change to
ecumenical dialogue. As the spiritual leader of 300 million
Orthodox Christians worldwide, His All-Holiness Bartholomew,
Orthodox Archbishop of Constantinople-New Rome and Ecumenical
Patriarch, has long been a beacon for strengthening inter-religious
and inter-faith dialogues on the world stage. This volume assembles
eleven joint statements initiated by the ecumenical patriarch with
prominent global Christian leaders, including Pope Francis, Pope
Benedict XVI, Pope St. John Paul II, Archbishop of Canterbury
Justin Welby, and Archbishop Ieronymos II. It also includes
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's address at Notre Dame upon
receiving an honorary doctorate. The statements address a wide
array of pressing issues, including human rights, the environment,
support of migrants, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the relationship
between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, frequently
referred to as "sister churches." The book contains a foreword by
John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame,
and an introduction by John Chryssavgis, which provides an overview
of the ecumenical patriarch's long ministry and powerful vision,
illustrating his significance both within the Orthodox world as
well as on the world stage. Beyond its testimony to the patriarch's
longstanding commitment to interreligious and inter-Christian
dialogue, this collection of joint statements has the added benefit
of gathering these all-important texts into one convenient place
for the first time.
Rev Kingsley Taylor B.D., M.A. (Celtic Christianity), Vicar of a
West Wales parish for 23 years was made Local Ministry Area Dean
with oversight of 15 churches spanning Carmarthenshire,
Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire. Then suddenly the Lockdown
happened. How do you keep in touch when the internet is not fast
enough for live streaming? I sent emails to those I had the email
address for and hoped the messages would be passed on. What started
so simply has become global, messages of hope in these difficult
times that have already helped so many.
Most people focus on pastoral ministry--the activities, programs,
and outreach connected with the life of the church--when
considering the work of a pastor. But one of the most important
parts of a minister's job is pastoral care--activities such as
compassion, healing, sustaining, guiding, and reconciling people to
one another and to God. People today earnestly seek a minister who
knows their names and cares about their hurts. Foundations of
Pastoral Care introduces both clergy and laity to the ministry
skills and personal qualities needed to provide effective care for
people inside and outside the church. With thorough examination,
Professor Bruce Petersen traces the historical development of soul
care from the primitive church and on through the centuries to the
church of today. In unit one, he introduces the place of pastoral
care in the local church. He emphasizes the unique responsibility
of church leaders and pastors to provide spiritual guidance while
caring for the physical and emotional needs of their people. In
unit two, he examines the pastoral care roles clergy are asked to
fill--shepherd, counselor, collaborator, and spiritual leader. In
unit three, he addresses the need for a pastoral presence in the
life of the church, and in unit four, he concludes with a
discussion about the pastor's personal life and the importance of
personal spiritual formation. Foundations of Pastoral Care provides
the fundamental elements pastors and church leaders need to care
for people in meaningful, personal ways with the love, compassion,
and grace Christ showed during His ministry on earth.
