Prayer at Taize is almost entirely sung. Over the course of the year, numerous different musical forms are used, including hymns, psalms, long or short responses and litanies sung a capella or accompanied by the organ, and certain songs from the Orthodox tradition. Most characteristic is the use of the 'songs of Taize', such as those presented in this new volume. The songs of Taize were first developed in the 1970s, as the number of young people from different countries grew and the need to find a way for all of them to participate in prayer together became more pressing. They were first presented to the English-speaking world in the 1980s in Music from Taize 1 & 2. These two volumes were followed in 1991 by Songs and Prayers of Taize (published by Mowbray/Continuum), the first book to give English translations for many of the songs, and in 1998 by Songs for Prayer. Christe Lux Mundi contains the principle songs written since then, nearly all composed by brothers of the Community. The contents do not overlap with the titles mentioned above. Christe Lux Mundi is available in two editions: the vocal edition contains, as well as the congregational parts, all the solo verses in English. The congregational parts on their own are also available in the assembly edition. Taize songs have two essential elements, whatever the context in which they are used. First, the songs are meditative and are intended to help open a contemplative dimension of prayer. Secondly, they are intended to allow the participation of everyone.
This follow-up to "A Book of Blessings...and how to write your own" collects short prayers about friends, enemies, relationships and the particular moments and places of our daily lives. This source of strength and solace for millions of Christian clergy and laypeople throughout the world can be a companion for your own spiritual journey. For centuries, Christians of different traditions and seekers from various backgrounds have found strength for their spiritual journey in the Book of Common Prayer (BCP). First composed in 1549 by Thomas Cranmer, Henry VIII's Archbishop of Canterbury, the BCP, alongside Shakespeare's works and the King James Bible, helped shape the English language. Today almost eighty million Anglican Christians throughout the world use the BCP in public worship, and countless people Anglican and otherwise use it in their private devotional life. In this unique presentation of selections organized by themes such as "Blessings in Times of Joy and Pain," "Called to Serve" and Praise and Petition with facing-page commentary, C. K. Robertson offers fascinating insights into the history and heritage of the BCP. He also makes available the riches of this spiritual treasure chest for all who are interested in deepening their life of prayer, building stronger relationships and making a difference in the world."
The official hymn book of the Church of Ireland.
A collection of Bible verses, prayers and liturgies for use during times of change, concern, and celebration. While many books provide prayers for worship and daily prayer, few books help clergy and lay people acknowledge, celebrate, or mourn the more secular events of their daily lives. Here, at last, is a collection of prayers, biblical references, liturgies, and reading appropriate for use on birthdays, at the birth of a child, on a couple's engagement, wedding, or wedding anniversary. Other prayers acknowledge the pain of divorce, illness, and the death of loved ones. Resources are also provided for celebrating the beginning of a new job, the move to a new home, and retirement. An excellent pastoral companion for clergy, this book is also helpful to lay people who want to mark the important moments in their lives.
"Praise and Worship with Flags" uncovers the significance of worship flags under the power of the Holy Spirit. The book points the reader to the flags' biblical truths, which have been understated, and takes the reader on a journey to discover these truths with Scripture, knowledge, and testimonies of healing and victory. "Praise and Worship with Flags" teaches the reader why and how to use the flags with power. It promotes the use of and encourages the reader to use worship flags in his or her home. It shows how the Holy Spirit, color, prayer, and love work together in worship and gives a practical exercise for the beginner to follow. By using the teaching in this book, the reader may experience great, sweet peace and intimacy with God in worship through the Holy Spirit. The book gives biblically sound reasons why church leaders may want to include worship flags in church services. It encourages church leaders to support the place and role that flags have in the church. It brings a message to veteran flag-bearers, which may give added understanding to their ministries. It teaches the reader how to handle the flags as tools that may be used by the Holy Spirit to bring people healing or victory. "Praise and Worship with Flags" tells the curious and intellectual mind the purpose, meaning, significance, and result of using worship flags. The use of flags is God's will. "We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we
will set up our banners: the Lord fulfill all thy petitions."
Rodney A. Werline shifts the scholarly approach to New Testament prayer from source and genre analyses to seeing prayer as a cultural practice, bringing new dimensions of the prayers to light. Assisted by ritual theorists such as Catherine Bell, Pierre Bourdieu, Talal Assad, and Roy Rappaport, Werline illuminates the genius of the New Testament authors and the members of their communities who, through years of embodied practice, acquired an aptitude which humans uniquely possess-the ability through ritual practice to navigate and maintain their relationships with one another and, together, with their God. Werline especially focuses on how their actions brought cultural memory to life, assisted in receiving revelations, protected them from demonic powers, and established and fulfilled their obligations to one another and to that God. The full import of these observations, however, is not possible without placing the prayers within their Second Temple Jewish context. Jewish prayers outside the New Testament should not function as mere "background," but as evidence of a grand cultural enterprise taking place, in which members of the early church actively participated.

Ultimately, prayer is a conversation with God. You don't need to use fancy words or recite long passages of Scripture. Just talk to God. Open your heart. Just lay your heart and your prayers at the Father's feet and wait for his powerful response.
A Eucharist-shaped Church: Prayer, Theology, Mission is a historical-theological survey of major movements and thinkers that have shaped sacramental theology and liturgical worship within the Anglican/Episcopal tradition. The contributors attend closely to the interplay between Christian thinking, praying, and living in order to distil lessons for liturgical revision and worship renewal. Each chapter explores a major thinker or movement, and explores how the theological, liturgical, ecclesiological, and missiological commitments of the thinker or movement interacted and shaped the thinker's or movement's overall thought. This serves a two-fold purpose: 1.) Much scholarship about Anglican eucharistic theology treats some aspect of that theology in isolation (presence, sacrifice, etc.) from other aspects, and from the context in which the theology was developed. This approach shows how these various aspects and contexts in fact have mutual explanatory power. 2.) The interaction of these various aspects of eucharistic theology provide a framework for those involved in liturgical revision to think through the commitments communicated by the proposed revisions.
This lovely volume provides a broad and rich source of blessings, many of which have never before been published. There are blessings for the seasons; for minor seasonal events like Mothering Sunday and Harvest, and for special events, like school and pet services, weddings, and the dedication of homes and church premises. A section of biblical exhortations, ascriptions and doxologies is also included. Those who would like to write their own blessings for public use will find guidance in the helpful introduction, which looks at the theology and nature of a 'blessing' and its constituent parts.
This collection of stories, meditations, poems and prayers evokes the authentic spirit of Celtic Christianity. Capturing the atmosphere of parables passed down through generations, it shows the human warmth, respect for the natural world and robust, down-to-earth qualities for which Celtic spirituality is so greatly valued. With its rich treasury of material - most of it previously unavailable in modern editions - Celtic Parables offers a fresh, lively introduction to the Celtic world.
During his long and richly influential ministry, David Adam has found inspiration in prayers written by the Celtic peoples of Britain and Ireland, and especially from the Hebrides. This lovely volume contains a series of meditations on forty prayers whose rhythm and earthiness offer a more natural way of conversing with God. For if we are to know God, we must spend time with him, sharing our concerns - as the Celtic peoples did so simply and naturally. And as we learn to rest in the presence of the One who is ever with us, so we will be drawn more fully into the mystery and wonder of his love.
