This volume brings together 15 studies reporting the latest
international research on developments and trends in religious
education. Together these 15 studies illustrate recurrent themes
affecting the development of religious education in diverse
locations and also illustrate the distinctive trajectories of
locations shaped by different histories and by different
contemporary contexts. These contributions were brought together in
a recent seminar convened by the International Seminar on Religious
Education and Values, the leading international association for
religious educators and values educators across the world. This
volume has selected key contributions made to the seminar, spanning
both conceptual and empirical perspectives, rooted in both
religious and secular traditions.
How can you move beyond youth group? You already know that youth
ministry is about much more than Sunday night Bible study and
lock-ins. It's about changing the lives of youth and empowering
young heroes to change their world. In this book Efrem Smith
provides you with a model for holistic ministry that addresses all
the needs of youth--body, soul and spirit. Powerful stories from
Smith's urban multiethnic context shape the content of Raising Up
Young Heroes. He shows how the fashion, music and lifestyle of the
hip-hop culture are permeating youth culture and how you can enter
that culture to help your youth meet Jesus. The principles that are
the foundation ofRaising Up Young Heroes are designed to serve the
whole body of Christ. So whatever your own youth group context, you
can benefit from the Smith's rich storehouse of experience and his
huge heart for today's youth.

God Culture for Kids. Why Do People Die?" explains the true purpose
of death to both the reader and the parent.
What is evil really? Where does it come from? And if God is really
God, why doesn't he do more about it? This world is out of
control-so violent, painful, unfair and destructive. Doesn't God
care? The Greek philosopher Epicurus is credited with saying:
Either God wants to abolish evil and cannot; or he can but does not
want to; or he cannot and does not want to. If he wants to but
cannot, he is impotent. If he can and does not want to, he is
wicked. But if God both can and wants to abolish evil, then how
comes evil in the world? This is known as the Epicurean paradox.
Obviously, mankind has been wrestling with the problem of evil for
some time; Epicurus lived between 340-270 BC. Fast-forward
twenty-three hundred years. Eric Jennings is a freshman at the
University of Florida. He and his older sister, Libby, have moved
in from the mission field to enter the premed program to become
medical missionaries. Eric's roommate, Todd Rehnquist, though a
baseball teammate and a good friend, is an atheist. And he poses
the "problem" to Eric using an interesting quote. This sets in
motion a conversation between Eric, Todd, Libby, Ray Cohen, the
Jennings' former science teacher, and Mike Murphy, a local youth
minister and one of Eric's spiritual mentors. The conversation
happens at an area breakfast haunt, the Gator Skillet. Follow them
as they wrestle with this most profound of issues and connect the
dots. You'll find that the answers are as simple as they are
surprising.
Train Up a Child explores how private schools in Old Order Amish
communities reflect and perpetuate church-community values and
identity. Here, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner asserts that the
reinforcement of those values among children is imperative to the
survival of these communities in the modern world.
Surveying settlements in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania,
and New York, Johnson-Weiner finds that, although Old Order
communities have certain similarities in their codes of conduct,
there is no standard Old Order school. She examines the choices
each community makes -- about pedagogy, curriculum, textbooks, even
school design -- to strengthen religious ideology, preserve the
social and linguistic markers of Old Order identity, and protect
their own community's beliefs and values from the influence of the
dominant society.
In the most comprehensive study of Old Order schools to date,
Johnson-Weiner provides valuable insight into how variables such as
community size and relationship with other Old Order groups affect
the role of these schools in maintaining behavioral norms and in
shaping the Old Order's response to modernity.

An Emancipatory Pedagogy of Jesus: Towards a Decolonizing
Epistemology of Education and Theology is an in-depth analysis on
the emancipatory power of love exhibited and exemplified in the
life, pedagogy, and praxis of Jesus Christ. This book takes its
reader on an intellectual and spiritual journey that uncovers the
importance of how culture, identity development, spirituality, and
ethnicity are essential elements in the intellectual, academic, and
spiritual development of Black, bi-cultural, and indigenous
populations who have been oppressed and marginalized. It
courageously presents Jesus Christ as the quintessential critical
educator, who Himself was also bi-cultural, marginalized, and
oppressed. This book provides a unique perspective on Jesus the
Teacher. Oftentimes scholarship seeks to examine only the ethics
and teachings of Jesus; however, this work looks to unearth the
emancipatory power of the pedagogy of Jesus and its foundational
contributions to social movements such as Liberation Theology in
Latin America and the fight for Justice and Civil Rights for
African Americans here in North America. By examining both the
theological and pedagogical offerings of Jesus, this book seeks to
determine not only what can be learned from a critical pedagogy of
Jesus, but more importantly, who benefits most from engaging in His
praxis. Through Jesus' masterful integration of theology and
pedagogy, He is presented as the literal embodiment of liberation
from all forms of oppression. It is in Jesus' emancipatory pedagogy
where both theology and education find their greatest fulfillment
through an emancipatory praxis for liberation, ultimately resulting
in a pedagogy that reconciles humanity back to God and God to
humanity.
