Earthsea" marks the first of the six now beloved Earthsea titles.
Ged was the greatest sorcerer in Earthsea, but in his youth he was
the reckless Sparrowhawk. In his hunger for power and knowledge, he
tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon
the world. This is the tumultuous tale of his testing, how he
mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and

A gripping, beautifully written historical mystery, from an
incredible new voice in children's fiction. The body seemed to fall
for a long time. There was no splash, or if there was it was lost
in the waves. Isobel was frozen to the spot for a moment - and then
her common sense caught up with her, and she stepped back quickly
into the shadows. When Isobel Petty is orphaned, she finds herself
being taken away from her home in India and sent to live with a
distant uncle in England. On board the S.S. Marianna, she witnesses
a shocking act - somebody being thrown overboard in the middle in
the night. But when the ship's captain insists that nobody is
missing, Isobel and her two new reluctant friends must solve two
mysteries - the identities of both the murderer and the victim -
before they reach England and the culprit has the chance to escape.
Inspired by The Secret Garden and the golden age of crime writing,
The Secret Detectives is perfect for fans of Robin Stevens and
Katherine Rundell. "A thoroughly entertaining mystery and a
heartening story of friendship. I loved it." - Katherine Woodfine,
author of The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow
The Children of the New Forest (1847) is a novel by Frederick
Marryat. Although Marryat is more widely known for novels inspired
by his experience as a captain in the Royal Navy, The Children of
the New Forest is a historical children's novel set in the
aftermath of the English Civil War. Bringing his readers into the
world of danger and political intrigue that was England in the 17th
century, Marryat earns his place as one of the leading adventure
writers of his time. "It was in the month of November in this year
that King Charles, accompanied by Sir John Berkely, Ashburnham, and
Legg, made his escape from Hampton Court, and rode as fast as the
horses could carry them toward that part of Hampshire which led to
the New Forest." At the end of the English Civil War,
Parliamentarian forces pursued King Charles and his dwindling
allies into the ancient woods of the New Forest. Searching the
scattered homes of the forest, they leave a wake of destruction in
their path. Having already lost their father, a Royalist, in the
Battle of Naseby, orphans Edward, Humphrey, Alice, and Edith are
targeted by a group of Roundhead soldiers. Rescued from their
burning home by Jacob Armitage, a local verderer, the children
learn to survive using techniques passed down by generations of New
Forest dwellers. With a beautifully designed cover and
professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Frederick
Marryat's The Children of the New Forest is a classic of British
literature reimagined for modern readers.
Frances Burnett Hodgson's novel The Secret Garden is both
intriguing and uplifting. It is regarded as one of the best
children's books written in the twentieth century. Mary Lennox, a
sickly ten year old girl, adrift in the world after both her mother
and father die is sent to Yorkshire to live with an uncle whom she
has never met, at his isolated house, Misselthwaite Manor.
Initially Mary is seen as a rude, aggressive and selfish child. She
dislikes her new home and the people living in it. But now the
scene is set for her transformation and the introduction of the
author's engaging theme of rejuvenation and renewal. In exploring
the grounds Mary finds the key to the locked garden which is
neglected and overrun with weeds. She sets her mind to bringing it
back to life. In doing so, Mary finds a purpose and an excitement
in her lonely existence. However, apart from the garden, there are
other secrets to be revealed at Misselthwaite Manor such as the
strange cries in the night and the identity of Colin, a disabled
boy, whom she discovers in the hidden bedroom. The popularity of
this novel bears witness to its universal appeal and its timeless
hold on the imagination.
Enjoy a rich collection of folktales, myths and legends from all
over Africa and the Caribbean, re-told for young readers. From the
trickster tales of Anansi the spider, to the story of how the
leopard got his spots; from the tale of the king who wanted to
touch the moon, to Aunt Misery's magical starfruit tree. This book
includes traditional favourites and classic folktales and
mythology.
