R. Buccheri, Vito di Gesu, Metod Saniga
R2,717 Discovery Miles 27 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Every human being is aware of the flow of time. This fact is embodied in the existence of such notions as the past and the future, the two domains being separated from each other by the single moment of the present. While the past is regarded as fixed and definite, the future is viewed as unknown, uncertain, and undetermined. The only perceivable moment is the present, the `now' - the ever-changing point moving from the past into the future. Physics tells us a different story: not only are the vast majority of physical laws time-reversible, but the concept of the `now' itself has no place at all in physics. In other words, the equations of physics do not distinguish between the past and the future and seem to be completely oblivious to the very idea of the present. This book discusses the biological and psychological aspects of perception of time, and the problems related to the determination of location arising from quantum physics, together with comments and opinions from philosophers and physicists.

Theoretical Issues in Psychology - Proceedings of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology 1999 Conference... Theoretical Issues in Psychology - Proceedings of the International Society for Theoretical Psychology 1999 Conference (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
John R. Morss, Niamh Stephenson, Hans van Rappard
R4,346 Discovery Miles 43 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Theoretical Issues in Psychology is published as the discipline of psychology enters its (at least) third century. The year 2001 brings with it millennial reflections, as well as the strange sense of deja vu that we derive from the Kubrick movie. As to the former, a glance at the contents list of this volume will demonstrate both the maturity and the vigour of theoretical debate within psychology. There is a level of sophistication here that should be the cause of quiet celebration. Recent ideas about discursive practice and subjectivity, chaos theory and autopoiesis, are effortlessly entrained with classical issues. Canonical texts are looked at with fresh eyes. Unresolved social and political questions are doggedly persisted with, and new perspectives on the human experience are pioneered. We are not afraid of long words, even if French in origin, but nor are we afraid to recognise that we are physical beings who touch other beings, who hold, desire, and remember - and who talk, talk, talk. For surely it is theoretically-sensitive work in psychology - whether "critical" or not - that best represents what the discipline has to offer the wider community.

Treebanks - Building and Using Parsed Corpora (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): A. Abeille Treebanks - Building and Using Parsed Corpora (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
A. Abeille
R4,246 Discovery Miles 42 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Linguists and engineers in Natural Language Processing tend to use electronic corpora more and more. Most research has long been limited to raw (unannotated) texts or to tagged texts (annotated with parts of speech only), but these approaches suffer from a word by word perspective. A new line of research involves corpora with richer annotations such as clauses and major constituents, grammatical functions and dependency links. The first parsed corpora were the English Lancaster treebank and Penn Treebank. New ones have recently been developed for other languages.
This book:

provides a state of the art on work being done with parsed corpora;

gathers 21 papers on building and using parsed corpora raising many relevant questions;

deals with a variety of languages and a variety of corpora;

is for those working in linguistics, computational linguistics, natural language, syntax, and grammar.

Desire for Society - Children's Knowledge as Social Imagination (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): H. G. Furth Desire for Society - Children's Knowledge as Social Imagination (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
H. G. Furth
R2,804 Discovery Miles 28 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

'A powerful, integrative, and insightful theory of society.'-Jack Meacham, State University of New York, Buffalo This provocative work presents a unified and scientifically grounded new theory on the development of society, namely, that the imaginary play of children reflects an endogenous orientation toward the construction of society. In twelve studies, Furth combines delightful observations of young children's spontaneous actions and interactions with lucid descriptions of complex psychological theories-including those of Piaget, Freud, Lacan, and Marxist scholars.

Cognitive Science, Vol. 1 (Hardcover): Noel Sheehy, Antony J. Chapman Cognitive Science, Vol. 1 (Hardcover)
Noel Sheehy, Antony J. Chapman
R5,849 Discovery Miles 58 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cognitive science explores intelligence and intelligent systems. Several disciplines, including psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and the neurosciences, have a well-established interest in these topics. An attempt to organize and unify views of thought developed within these distinct disciplines, cognitive science is concerned with the construction of abstract theory of intelligent processes, the investigation of human and animal intelligence, and a discussion of computational principles that underlie the organization and behavior of computer programs.

This three volume set presents a careful selection of the most important articles on cognitive science, divided into the following areas:

Foundational Issues Conceptualization, Learning, & Memory Representation Problem Solving & Understanding Visual Perception Comprehension Production

Articles in these volumes have been drawn from various books and from the following journals: Science, Psychological Bulletin, The Psychology of Computer Vision, Psychological Review, Cognitive Science, Computers and Thought, Artificial Intelligence, Computers and Biomedical Research, Cognitive Psychology, Cognition, Language and Speech, and Computational Linguistics

Processes and Boundaries of the Mind - Extending the Limit Line (Hardcover, New): Yair Neuman Processes and Boundaries of the Mind - Extending the Limit Line (Hardcover, New)
Yair Neuman
R2,403 Discovery Miles 24 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

How is it that the world is conceived as exclusively populated by objects (for example books, cars, numbers and people) while cognition is first and foremost a dynamic process? Inquiring into the reified universe Dr. Neuman explores questions of mind, reality, knowledge and signification in a provocative, stimulating and humorous way. Drawing on various domains such as systems research, semiotics, philosophy, and complexity sciences, Dr. Neuman is touching basic questions of our Being-in-the-World as cognate creatures, and presents a novel theory of the mind as a boundary phenomenon. Following the footsteps of Gregory Bateson and Valentine Volosinov, the book propagates a process-oriented theory of the mind, in a way that has never been presented before. In this context, new and creative solutions are presented for a variety of old philosophical problems such as: What is the Mind? Why do we use different signs for the same object across different cultures? and how is it possible to think on our thinking without getting into problems such as an infinite regression.

Birth of Intelligence - From RNA to Artificial Intelligence (Hardcover): Daeyeol Lee Birth of Intelligence - From RNA to Artificial Intelligence (Hardcover)
Daeyeol Lee
R1,309 Discovery Miles 13 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What is intelligence? How did it begin and evolve to human intelligence? Does a high level of biological intelligence require a complex brain? Can man-made machines be truly intelligent? Is AI fundamentally different from human intelligence? In Birth of Intelligence, distinguished neuroscientist Daeyeol Lee tackles these pressing fundamental issues. To better prepare for future society and its technology, including how the use of AI will impact our lives, it is essential to understand the biological root and limits of human intelligence. After systematically reviewing biological and computational underpinnings of decision making and intelligent behaviors, Birth of Intelligence proposes that true intelligence requires life.

The Catalyzing Mind - Beyond Models of Causality (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Kenneth R. Cabell, Jaan Valsiner The Catalyzing Mind - Beyond Models of Causality (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Kenneth R. Cabell, Jaan Valsiner
R3,958 R3,428 Discovery Miles 34 280 Save R530 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do we understand and explain phenomena in psychology? What does the concept of "causality" mean when we discuss higher psychological functions and behavior? Is it possible to generate "laws" in a psychological and behavioral science-laws that go beyond statistical regularities, frequencies, and probabilities? An international group of authors compare and contrast the use of a causal model in psychology with a newer model-the catalytic model. The Catalyzing Mind: Beyond Models of Causality proposes an approach to the qualitative nature of psychological phenomena that focuses on the psychological significance and meaning of conditions, contexts, and situations as well as their sign-mediating processes. Contributors develop, apply, and criticize the notion of a catalyzing mind in hopes of achieving conceptual clarity and rigor. Disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, semiotics and biosemiotics are used for an interdisciplinary approach to the book. Research topics such as history and national identity, immigration, and transitions to adulthood are all brought into a dialogue with the concept of the catalyzing mind. With a variety of disciplines, theoretical concepts, and research topics this book is a collective effort at an approach to move beyond models of causality for explaining and understanding psychological phenomena.

Children's Drawings - Iconic Coding of the Environment (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): Martin Krampen Children's Drawings - Iconic Coding of the Environment (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
Martin Krampen
R2,764 Discovery Miles 27 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is dedicated to all those who love children and their wonderful, often surprising, drawings. This means it addresses all those interested in their devel oping capacity to produce "iconic" signs: parents, teachers, child psychologists, artists, architects (since building drawings are treated here), and semioticians at large-to name but a few potential readers. Because of the broad audience, I tried to keep scientific jargon to a minimum. Whenever this was unavoidable, I tried to explain the terms in such a way that even beginners in psychology could understand my arguments. I received the first impulse to think about a book like this from the Interna tional Year of the Child declared by the UN in 1979. In a first phase of the project, I obtained drawings of the six different building types treated in this book from more than 100 children aged 3-12 years in Turkey during a stay there as part of the faculty of Architecture of the Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon under the auspices of the UN ESCO/UNDP program TUR/75/012. My special thanks go to Dr. Erdem Aksoy, then president of the university, and Dr. Ozgontil Aksoy, then dean of the faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, for their encouragement to carry out the project. I would also like to thank Dr. Kutzal Oztlirk, Sevinc Erttirk, Ali Ozbilen, Hasan Saltik, together with all the teachers in nursery and elementary schools in and around Trabzon who helped to collect the drawings."

This book addresses an intriguing question: are our decisions rational? It explains seemingly irrational human decision-making behavior by taking into account our limited ability to process information. It also shows with several examples that optimization under granularity restriction leads to observed human decision-making. Drawing on the Nobel-prize-winning studies by Kahneman and Tversky, researchers have found many examples of seemingly irrational decisions: e.g., we overestimate the probability of rare events. Our explanation is that since human abilities to process information are limited, we operate not with the exact values of relevant quantities, but with "granules" that contain these values. We show that optimization under such granularity indeed leads to observed human behavior. In particular, for the first time, we explain the mysterious empirical dependence of betting odds on actual probabilities. This book can be recommended to all students interested in human decision-making, to researchers whose work involves human decisions, and to practitioners who design and employ systems involving human decision-making -so that they can better utilize our ability to make decisions under uncertainty.

Psychotherapy and Buddhism - Toward an Integration (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): Jeffrey B. Rubin Psychotherapy and Buddhism - Toward an Integration (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Jeffrey B. Rubin
R2,770 Discovery Miles 27 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is currently a burgeoning interest in the relationship between the Western psychotherapeutic and Buddhist meditative traditions among therapists, researchers, and spiritual seekers. Psychotherapy and Buddhism initiates a conversation between these two modern methods of achieving greater self-understanding and peace of mind. Dr. Jeffrey B. Rubin explores how they might be combined to better serve patients in therapy and adherents to a spiritual way of life. He examines the strengths and limitations of each tradition through three contexts: the nature of self, conception of ideal health, and process of achieving optimal health. The volume features the first two cases of Buddhists in psychoanalytic treatment.

The authors examine the role of metacognition in activities as varied as classroom learning, piloting airplanes, and eyewitness testimony. The ideas and questions developed in the book will give a dynamic impulse to research in the field.

Zizek's Politics (Paperback, New Ed): Jodi Dean Zizek's Politics (Paperback, New Ed)
Jodi Dean
R1,696 Discovery Miles 16 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Slavoj Zizek is perhaps the most important, original and enigmatic philosophers writing today. Many readers both inside and outside of the academy have been intrigued by both the man and his writing yet, given the density of his prose and the radical views he often espouses, they have struggled to get a handle on his basic positions. He draws upon and makes continual reference to the challenging concepts of Kant, Hegel, Marx, Lacan, and Badiou. His prose is dense and frenetic and his dialectical twists and turns seem to make it impossible to attribute to him any specific position: he celebrates St. Paul and orthodox Christians even as he engages in a spirited defense of Lenin.
"Zizek's Politics "will synthesize Zizek's myriad political writings into a systematic theory and put his theory into dialogue with key concepts and positions in contemporary political thought. It will provide readers with a much needed critical introduction to the political thought of one of the world's most widely known and eccentric thinkers.

R10,629 Discovery Miles 106 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The meeting Theoretical Perspectives on Autobiographical Memory was held at the Grange Hotel, Grange-over-Sands, in the Lake District region of North Western England, July 1991. The workshop was financed by a generous grant from the NATO Scientific Affairs Division under the Advanced Research Workshop programme and without this funding the meeting would not have been possible: the organisers and delegates gratefully acknowledge the support of the NATO Advanced Research Workshops programme. Thirty-five scientists from five different NATO countries attended the workshop and twenty-seven delegates presented papers. The two aims of the workshop were to bring together in one forum a number of comparatively separate approaches to autobiographical memory and to promote theory in the area generally . These aims were fulfilled in the presentations and discussions, particularly the final discussion session, in which delegates focussed on the central issues of the nature, structure, and functions of autobiographical memory and how these emerge in different research areas. The present volume contains the papers arising from the workshop. We thank Mrs. Sheila Whalley for secretarial help and Fiona Hirst and Stephen Anderson fur practical assistance in coordinating registration for the workshop."
