Space Weather & Telecommunications (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): John M. Goodman Space Weather & Telecommunications (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
John M. Goodman
R4,581 Discovery Miles 45 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Space weather has an enormous influence on modern telecommunication systems even though we may not always appreciate it. We shall endeavor throughout this monograph to expose the relationships between space weather factors and the performance (or lack thereof) of telecommunication, navigation, and surveillance systems. Space weather is a rather new term, having found an oMicial expression as the result of several government initiatives that use the term in the title of programs. But it is the logical consequence of the realization that space also has weather, just as the lower atmosphere has weather. While the weather in space will influence space systems that operate in that special environment, it is also true that space weather will influence systems that we understand and use here on terra firma. This brings space weather home as it were. It is not some abstract topic of interest to scientists alone; it is a topic of concern to all of us. I hope to make this clear as the book unfolds. Why have I written this book? First of all, I love the topic. While at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), I had the opportunity to do research on many topics including: Thomson scatter radar and satellite beacon studies of the ionosphere, utilization of the NASA Gemini platform for ionospheric investigations, microwave radar propagation studies, I-IF signal intercept and direction-finding experiments, and multi-disciplinary studies of certain physical phenomena relevant to weapon systems development.

Design of Ultra-Low Power Impulse Radios (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Alyssa Apsel, Xiao Wang, Rajeev Dokania Design of Ultra-Low Power Impulse Radios (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Alyssa Apsel, Xiao Wang, Rajeev Dokania
R4,027 R3,458 Discovery Miles 34 580 Save R569 (14%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book covers the fundamental principles behind the design of ultra-low power radios and how they can form networks to facilitate a variety of applications within healthcare and environmental monitoring, since they may operate for years off a small battery or even harvest energy from the environment. These radios are distinct from conventional radios in that they must operate with very constrained resources and low overhead. This book provides a thorough discussion of the challenges associated with designing radios with such constrained resources, as well as fundamental design concepts and practical approaches to implementing working designs. Coverage includes integrated circuit design, timing and control considerations, fundamental theory behind low power and time domain operation, and network/communication protocol considerations.

Security for Mobility (Hardcover, New): Chris J. Mitchell Security for Mobility (Hardcover, New)
Chris J. Mitchell
R3,712 Discovery Miles 37 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Over the last two decades, mobile telecommunications has grown dramatically, from a small niche technology to a massive industry. Mobile telephones are now ubiquitous, and the divisions between PCs, PDAs, mobile telephones and other mobile devices are becoming increasingly blurred. Against this background, the security of information of both the devices themselves, and the information handled by these devices, is becoming ever more important. Security for Mobility pulls together up to the minute research from an international group of academics and professionals working in industry. The main text of the book is divided into five parts - underlying technologies; network security; mobile code issues; application security; and the future. Each chapter of the book is the collaboration of different authors, including many of the leading European experts currently working within the field. Thus each chapter is self-contained and can be read independently, although there are many relationships between the various chapters. The book will be of interest to engineers and computer scientists working in security-related aspects of the communications, computing and telecommunications industries, as well as postgraduate students and academics working within these fields.

24/7 - How Cell Phones and the Internet Change the Way We Live, Work, and Play (Hardcover): Jarice Hanson 24/7 - How Cell Phones and the Internet Change the Way We Live, Work, and Play (Hardcover)
Jarice Hanson
R2,213 Discovery Miles 22 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Just as the automobile radically changed people's lives at the beginning of the 20th century, so too has the revolution in online services (including blogging, podcasting, videogaming, shopping, and social networking) and cell-phone use changed our lives at the turn of the 21st century. In addition, many other services, activities, and devices—including the Palm Pilot, the BlackBerry, the iPod, digital cameras, and cell cameras—have been made possible by the combination of these two technologies. Whereas the automobile allowed people for the first time to work in cities and live comfortably in the suburbs, extending the long commute beyond the limits previously circumscribed by public transportation, the Internet and cell phone allow us to interact with others from around the world—or a few hundred miles—from where we work or live, giving rise to the telecommuting phenomenon and allowing us to stay in touch with friends and families in the new virtual environment. As Hanson demonstrates in her new book, these technologies enable us to work and play 24/7, anytime, anywhere. What does this mean for us as individuals and for society as a whole? What are the social implications of this technological revolution that we have witnessed in the short span of about 20 years? Do people of different generations use these technologies in the same ways, or do they adopt them to support their communication habits formed at different times of their lives? How does the illusion of control provided by these technologies affect the way we think about what is meaningful in our lives? Hanson examines the wide-ranging impact of this change. How do individuals posting their viewpoints on the Internet affect democracy? Is it possible to ever completely prevent identity theft over the Internet? How permanent is information stored on the Internet or on a hard drive? Do cell phones change the way people think about privacy or the way they communicate with others? Does email? Do videogames teach new social principles? Do cell phones and the Internet change traditional communication behaviors and attitudes? Hanson discusses these crucial issues and explores to what extent individuals do have control, and she assesses how social and governmental services are responding to (or running from) the problems posed by these new technologies.

Submodular Rate Region Models for Multicast Communication in Wireless Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Maximilian... Submodular Rate Region Models for Multicast Communication in Wireless Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Maximilian Riemensberger
R3,905 R3,623 Discovery Miles 36 230 Save R282 (7%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book proposes representations of multicast rate regions in wireless networks based on the mathematical concept of submodular functions, e.g., the submodular cut model and the polymatroid broadcast model. These models subsume and generalize the graph and hypergraph models. The submodular structure facilitates a dual decomposition approach to network utility maximization problems, which exploits the greedy algorithm for linear programming on submodular polyhedra. This approach yields computationally efficient characterizations of inner and outer bounds on the multicast capacity regions for various classes of wireless networks.

Olivier Cappe, Eric Moulines, Tobias Ryden
R7,133 Discovery Miles 71 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Hidden Markov models have become a widely used class of statistical models with applications in diverse areas such as communications engineering, bioinformatics, finance and many more. This book is a comprehensive treatment of inference for hidden Markov models, including both algorithms and statistical theory. Topics range from filtering and smoothing of the hidden Markov chain to parameter estimation, Bayesian methods and estimation of the number of states. In a unified way the book covers both models with finite state spaces, which allow for exact algorithms for filtering, estimation etc. and models with continuous state spaces (also called state-space models) requiring approximate simulation-based algorithms that are also described in detail. Simulation in hidden Markov models is addressed in five different chapters that cover both Markov chain Monte Carlo and sequential Monte Carlo approaches. Many examples illustrate the algorithms and theory. The book also carefully treats Gaussian linear state-space models and their extensions and it contains a chapter on general Markov chain theory and probabilistic aspects of hidden Markov models. This volume will suit anybody with an int background, while the more theoretical parts require knowledge of probability theory at the measure-theoretical level.

Testing of Communicating Systems - IFIP TC6 9th International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems Darmstadt, Germany... Testing of Communicating Systems - IFIP TC6 9th International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems Darmstadt, Germany 9-11 September 1996 (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
Bernd Baumgarten, Heinz-Jurgen Burkhardt, Alfred Giessler
R5,797 Discovery Miles 57 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume contains the proceedings of the IFIP WG 6. 1 International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems (lWTCS'96), held in Darmstadt, Germany, on September 9 through II, 1996, continuing the IFIP WG 6. 1 series of International Workshops on Protocol Test Systems (IWPTS). In this series of working conferences, held annually since 1988, many valuable contributions have been presented with an emphasis both on the OSI conformance testing methodology and framework as well as the standardization effort on formal methods in conformance testing. While there are stilI open issues and divergencies between theory and practice in these fields, the scope of the series started expanding to related fields of growing practical relevance, for example to testing with regard to the B-ISDN protocol reference model, in particular ATM, the ODP reference model, and the Internet protocol suite, as well as to interoperability testing and performance testing. To reflect the extended scope, the program committee agreed on a new name for this series of working conferences, to be applied the first time to the 1996 conference. However, in order to emphasize the tradition of IWPTS, the numbering of this series was continued, such that IWTCS'96 is counted as the 9th International Workshop on Testing of Communicating Systems. As in the years before, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practi tioners, furthering the exchange of views, and correlating the work of both sides."

Digital Signal Processing in Power Electronics Control Circuits (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2017): Krzysztof Sozanski Digital Signal Processing in Power Electronics Control Circuits (Hardcover, 2nd ed. 2017)
Krzysztof Sozanski
R5,402 Discovery Miles 54 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This revised and extended second edition covers problems concerning the design and realization of digital control algorithms for power electronics circuits using digital signal processing (DSP) methods. This book discusses signal processing, starting from analog signal acquisition, through conversion to digital form, methods of filtration and separation, and ending with pulse control of output power transistors. The book is focused on two applications for the considered methods of digital signal processing, a three-phase shunt active power filter and a digital class-D audio power amplifier. The book bridges the gap between power electronics and digital signal processing. Many control algorithms and circuits for power electronics in the current literature are described using analog transmittances. This may not always be acceptable, especially if half of the sampling frequencies and half of the power transistor switching frequencies are close to the band of interest. Therefore in this book, a digital circuit is treated as a digital circuit with its own peculiar characteristics, rather than an analog circuit. This helps to avoid errors and instability. This edition includes a new chapter dealing with selected problems of simulation of power electronics systems together with digital control circuits. The book includes numerous examples using MATLAB and PSIM programs.

Geometric Constraints for Object Detection and Delineation (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Jefferey Shufelt Geometric Constraints for Object Detection and Delineation (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Jefferey Shufelt
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The ability to extract generic 3D objects from images is a crucial step towards automation of a variety of problems in cartographic database compilation, industrial inspection and assembly, and autonomous navigation. Many of these problem domains do not have strong constraints on object shape or scene content, presenting serious obstacles for the development of robust object detection and delineation techniques. Geometric Constraints for Object Detection and Delineation addresses these problems with a suite of novel methods and techniques for detecting and delineating generic objects in images of complex scenes, and applies them to the specific task of building detection and delineation from monocular aerial imagery. PIVOT, the fully automated system implementing these techniques, is quantitatively evaluated on 83 images covering 18 test scenes, and compared to three existing systems for building extraction. The results highlight the performance improvements possible with rigorous photogrammetric camera modeling, primitive-based object representations, and geometric constraints derived from their combination. PIVOT's performance illustrates the implications of a clearly articulated set of philosophical principles, taking a significant step towards automatic detection and delineation of 3D objects in real-world environments. Geometric Constraints for Object Detection and Delineation is suitable as a textbook or as a secondary text for a graduate-level course, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.
