Policy Shock - Recalibrating Risk and Regulation after Oil Spills, Nuclear Accidents and Financial Crises (Paperback): Edward J... Policy Shock - Recalibrating Risk and Regulation after Oil Spills, Nuclear Accidents and Financial Crises (Paperback)
Edward J Balleisen, Lori S. Bennear, Kimberly D. Krawiec, Jonathan B. Wiener
R1,017 Discovery Miles 10 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Policy Shock examines how policy-makers in industrialized democracies respond to major crises. After the immediate challenges of disaster management, crises often reveal new evidence or frame new normative perspectives that drive reforms designed to prevent future events of a similar magnitude. Such responses vary widely - from cosmetically masking inaction, to creating stronger incentive systems, requiring greater transparency, reorganizing government institutions and tightening regulatory standards. This book situates post-crisis regulatory policy-making through a set of conceptual essays written by leading scholars from economics, psychology and political science, which probe the latest thinking about risk analysis, risk perceptions, focusing events and narrative politics. It then presents ten historically-rich case studies that engage with crisis events in three policy domains: offshore oil, nuclear power and finance. It considers how governments can prepare to learn from crisis events - by creating standing expert investigative agencies to identify crisis causes and frame policy recommendations.

National Museums in Africa - Identity, History and Politics (Hardcover): Raymond Silverman, George Abungu, Peter Probst National Museums in Africa - Identity, History and Politics (Hardcover)
Raymond Silverman, George Abungu, Peter Probst
R4,152 Discovery Miles 41 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

National Museums in Africa brings the voices of African museum professionals into dialogue with scholars and, by so doing, is able to consider the state of African national museums from fresh perspectives. Covering all regions of the continent, the volume's thirteen chapters allow for a deep and nuanced understanding of the intricate interplay between past and present in contemporary Africa. Taking stock of the shifting museum landscape in Africa, with new players like China and South Korea challenging the conditions of cultural exchange, the book demonstrates that national museums are being rediscovered as important sites of political engagement and cultural negotiation. This is the first book to critically examine the roles national museums in Africa have played in the societies in which they are situated, but it is also the first to consider the roles that national museums might play in current debates concerning the restitution and repatriation of cultural patrimony taken from Africa during the colonial era. Informed by a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective, this ground-breaking book will appeal to anyone interested in museums in Africa. It will be particularly useful to scholars and students working in the areas of museum and heritage studies, African studies, anthropology, archaeology, history, art history and cultural studies.

Resisting Redevelopment - Protest in Aspiring Global Cities (Hardcover): Eleonora Pasotti Resisting Redevelopment - Protest in Aspiring Global Cities (Hardcover)
Eleonora Pasotti
R2,369 Discovery Miles 23 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The politics of urban development is one of the most enduring, central themes of urban politics. In Resisting Redevelopment, Eleonora Pasotti explores the forces that enable residents of 'aspiring global cities,' or economically competitive cities, to mobilize against gentrification and other forms of displacement, as well as what makes mobilizations successful. Scholars and activists alike will benefit from this one-of-a-kind comparative study. Impressive in its scope, this book examines twenty-nine protest campaigns over a decade in ten major cities across five continents, from Santiago to Seoul to Los Angeles. Pasotti sheds light on an approach that is both understudied and remarkably effective - the practice of successful organizers deploying 'experiential tools,' or events, social archives, neighborhood tours, and performances designed to attract participants and transform the protest site into the place to be. With this book, Pasotti promises to provide a creative and novel contribution to the literature of contentious politics.

Partisans, Antipartisans, and Nonpartisans - Voting Behavior in Brazil (Paperback): David J. Samuels, Cesar Zucco Partisans, Antipartisans, and Nonpartisans - Voting Behavior in Brazil (Paperback)
David J. Samuels, Cesar Zucco
R973 Discovery Miles 9 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Conventional wisdom suggests that partisanship has little impact on voter behavior in Brazil; what matters most is pork-barreling, incumbent performance, and candidates' charisma. This book shows that soon after redemocratization in the 1980s, over half of Brazilian voters expressed either a strong affinity or antipathy for or against a particular political party. In particular, that the contours of positive and negative partisanship in Brazil have mainly been shaped by how people feel about one party - the Workers' Party (PT). Voter behavior in Brazil has largely been structured around sentiment for or against this one party, and not any of Brazil's many others. The authors show how the PT managed to successfully cultivate widespread partisanship in a difficult environment, and also explain the emergence of anti-PT attitudes. They then reveal how positive and negative partisanship shape voters' attitudes about politics and policy, and how they shape their choices in the ballot booth.

An Emerging Africa in the Age of Globalisation (Hardcover): Robert Mudida An Emerging Africa in the Age of Globalisation (Hardcover)
Robert Mudida
R4,126 Discovery Miles 41 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book is very policy-oriented and fills an important gap in the literature on policies related specifically to the dialogue of civilisation in a globalized world. Deals with cross-cutting issues in economic integration, conflict management, human rights and sustainable development. Addresses challenges such as religious extremism, environmental problems, and political unrest.

Immigrant Incorporation in East Asian Democracies (Hardcover): Erin Aeran Chung Immigrant Incorporation in East Asian Democracies (Hardcover)
Erin Aeran Chung
R2,825 Discovery Miles 28 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite labour shortages and rapidly shrinking working-age populations, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan shared restrictive immigration policies and exclusionary practices toward immigrants until the early 2000s. While Taiwan maintained this trajectory, Japan took incremental steps to expand immigrant services at the grassroots level, and South Korea enacted sweeping immigration reforms. How did convergent policies generate these divergent patterns of immigrant incorporation? Departing from the dominant scholarship that focuses on culture, domestic political elites, and international norms, this book shows the important role of civil society actors - including immigrants themselves - in giving voice to immigrant interests, mobilizing immigrant actors, and shaping public debate and policy on immigration. Based on more than 150 in-depth interviews and focus groups with over twenty immigrant communities, Immigrant Incorporation in East Asian Democracies examines how the civic legacies of past struggles for democracy shape current movements for immigrant rights and recognition.

Nasser's Blessed Movement - Egypt's Free Officers and the July Revolution (Paperback): Joel Gordon Nasser's Blessed Movement - Egypt's Free Officers and the July Revolution (Paperback)
Joel Gordon
R554 Discovery Miles 5 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This essential book explores the early years of military rule following the Free Officers' coup of 1952. Enriched by interviews with actors in and observers of the events, Nasser's Blessed Movement shows how the officers' belief in a quick reformation by force was transformed into a vital, long-term process that changed the face of Egypt. Under Gamal Abdel Nasser, the military regime launched an ambitious program of political, social, and economic reform. Egypt became a leader in Arab and non-aligned politics, as well as a model for political mobilization and national development throughout the Third World. Although Nasser exerted considerable personal influence over the course of events, his rise as a national and regional hero in the mid-1950s was preceded by a period in which he and his colleagues groped for direction, and in which many Egyptians disliked--even feared--them. Joel Gordon analyzes the goals, programs, successes, and failures of the young regime, providing the most comprehensive account of the Egyptian revolution to date. This edition includes a new Introduction that looks back at the post-1952 period from a post-2011 perspective.

The Uncounted - Politics of Data in Global Health (Paperback): Sara L. M Davis The Uncounted - Politics of Data in Global Health (Paperback)
Sara L. M Davis
R985 Discovery Miles 9 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the global race to reach the end of AIDS, why is the world slipping off track? The answer has to do with stigma, money, and data. Global funding for AIDS response is declining. Tough choices must be made: some people will win and some will lose. Global aid agencies and governments use health data to make these choices. While aid agencies prioritize a shrinking list of countries, many governments deny that sex workers, men who have sex with men, drug users, and transgender people exist. Since no data is gathered about their needs, life-saving services are not funded, and the lack of data reinforces the denial. The Uncounted cracks open this and other data paradoxes through interviews with global health leaders and activists, ethnographic research, analysis of gaps in mathematical models, and the author's experience as an activist and senior official. It shows what is counted, what is not, and why empowering communities to gather their own data could be key to ending AIDS.

Reforming Local Government - Consolidation, Cooperation, or Re-creation? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Joseph Drew Reforming Local Government - Consolidation, Cooperation, or Re-creation? (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Joseph Drew
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a bold prescription for local government reform that moves well beyond the old arguments regarding consolidations (also referred to as amalgamations) and co-operation (sometimes referred to as shared services) to paint a picture of an efficient, effective tier of government that strikes a balance between the right of persons to pursue their existential ends and the need to promote the common good. The book presents a system of local government that balances human dignity with the common good, restrains Leviathan, provides a voice for the disenfranchised (and even the disinterested), and delivers goods and services efficiently and effectively. Ironically, what is often argued to be the weakness of local government in many jurisdictions - the fact that it is merely a creature of statute - is also the best hope we have of making the oft cited rhetoric about how 'local government is the closest to the people that serves the people best' become reality.

From War to Democracy - Dilemmas of Peacebuilding (Hardcover, New): Anna K. Jarstad, Timothy D. Sisk From War to Democracy - Dilemmas of Peacebuilding (Hardcover, New)
Anna K. Jarstad, Timothy D. Sisk
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Attempts to introduce democracy in the wake of civil war face a critical problem: how can war-torn societies move towards peace and democracy when competitive politics and hard-fought elections exacerbate social and political conflict? Through a study of six themes (peacekeeping, management of violence, power sharing, political party transformation, elections, civil society and international reactions to democratization crises) this volume considers the dilemmas that arise in pursuing peace after civil war through processes of democratization. The contributors' research highlights the complex relationship between democratization, which is competitive, and peacebuilding or efforts to achieve reconciliation. The book offers insights into more effective action in peacebuilding in light of the short-term negative effects that democratization can introduce. It is a thought-provoking work that seeks both to advance theory and to provide policy-relevant findings to facilitate more effective and durable transitions from war to democracy.

Constitution-Making and Transnational Legal Order (Paperback): Gregory Shaffer, Tom Ginsburg, Terence C. Halliday Constitution-Making and Transnational Legal Order (Paperback)
Gregory Shaffer, Tom Ginsburg, Terence C. Halliday
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the rise of the nation-state in the nineteenth century, constitutions have been seen as an embodiment of national values and identity. However, individuals, ideas, and institutions from abroad have always influenced constitutions, and so the process is better described as transnational. As cross-border interaction is increasing in intensity, a dominant transnational legal order for constitutions has emerged, with its own norms, guidelines and shared ideas. Yet both the process and substance of constitution-making are being contested in divergent and insurgent constitutional orders. Bringing together leading scholars from the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, this volume addresses the actors, networks, norms and processes involved in constitution-making, as well as the related challenges, from a transnational and comparative perspective. Drawing from the research on transnational legal orders, this work explores and examines constitution-making in every region of the world.

Discovering Childhood in International Relations (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): J. Marshall Beier Discovering Childhood in International Relations (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
J. Marshall Beier
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how and why, in the context of International Relations, children's subjecthood has all too often been relegated to marginal terrains and children themselves automatically associated with the need for protection in vulnerable situations: as child soldiers, refugees, and conflated with women, all typically with the accent on the Global South. Challenging us to think critically about childhood as a technology of global governance, the authors explore alternative ways of finding children and their agency in a more central position in IR, in terms of various forms of children's activism, children and climate change, children and security, children and resilience, and in their inevitable role in governing the future. Focusing on the problems, pitfalls, promises, and prospects of addressing children and childhoods in International Relations, this book places children more squarely in the purview of political subjecthood and hence more centrally in IR.

How Insurgency Begins - Rebel Group Formation in Uganda and Beyond (Hardcover): Janet I. Lewis How Insurgency Begins - Rebel Group Formation in Uganda and Beyond (Hardcover)
Janet I. Lewis
R2,827 Discovery Miles 28 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How and why do rebel groups initially form? Prevailing scholarship has attributed the emergence of armed rebellion to the explosion of pre-mobilized political or ethnic hostilities. However, this book finds both uncertainty and secrecy shrouding the start of insurgency in weak states. Examining why only some incipient armed rebellions succeed in becoming viable challengers to governments, How Insurgency Begins shows that rumors circulating in places where rebel groups form can influence civilians' perceptions of both rebels and the state. By revealing the connections between villagers' trusted network structures and local ethnic demography, Janet I. Lewis shows how ethnic networks facilitate the spread of pro-rebel rumors. This in-depth analysis of conflicts in Uganda and neighbouring states speaks to scholars and policymakers seeking to understand the motives and actions of those initiating armed rebellion, those witnessing the process in their community, and those trying to stop it.

Social Media and Democracy - The State of the Field, Prospects for Reform (Paperback): Nathaniel Persily, Joshua A. Tucker Social Media and Democracy - The State of the Field, Prospects for Reform (Paperback)
Nathaniel Persily, Joshua A. Tucker
R1,004 Discovery Miles 10 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last five years, widespread concern about the effects of social media on democracy has led to an explosion in research from different disciplines and corners of academia. This book is the first of its kind to take stock of this emerging multi-disciplinary field by synthesizing what we know, identifying what we do not know and obstacles to future research, and charting a course for the future inquiry. Chapters by leading scholars cover major topics - from disinformation to hate speech to political advertising - and situate recent developments in the context of key policy questions. In addition, the book canvasses existing reform proposals in order to address widely perceived threats that social media poses to democracy. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Transnational Histories of Southern Africa's Liberation Movements (Paperback): Jocelyn Alexander, JoAnn McGregor,... Transnational Histories of Southern Africa's Liberation Movements (Paperback)
Jocelyn Alexander, JoAnn McGregor, Blessing-Miles Tendi
R1,295 Discovery Miles 12 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transnational Histories of Southern Africa's Liberation Movements offers new perspectives on southern Africa's wars of national liberation, drawing on extensive oral historical and archival research. Assuming neither the primacy of nationalist loyalties as they exist today nor any single path to liberation, the book unpicks any notion of a straightforward imposition of Cold War ideologies or strategic interests on liberation wars. This approach adds new dimensions to the rich literatures on the Global Cold War and on solidarity movements. The contributors trace the ways that ideas and practices were made, adopted, and circulated through time and space through a focus on African soldiers, politicians and diplomats. The book also asks what motivated the men and women who crossed borders to join liberation movements, how Cold War influences were acted upon, interpreted and used, and why certain moments, venues and relations took on exaggerated importance. The connections among liberation movements, between them and their hosts, and across an extraordinarily diverse set of external actors reveal surprising exchanges and lasting legacies that have too often been obscured by the assertion of monolithic national histories. Tracing an extraordinarily diverse set of interactions and exchanges, Transnational Histories of Southern Africa's Liberation Movements will be of great interest to scholars of Southern Africa, Transnational History, the Cold War and African Politics. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Southern African Studies.

Policy Agendas in Autocracy, and Hybrid Regimes - The Case of Hungary (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Miklos Sebok, Zsolt Boda Policy Agendas in Autocracy, and Hybrid Regimes - The Case of Hungary (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Miklos Sebok, Zsolt Boda
R4,254 Discovery Miles 42 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past thirty years the comparative study of policy agendas under the aegis of the Comparative Agendas Project (CAP) has become one of the fastest growing sub-field in policy research. Yet, similarly to policy studies in general, most of the agenda-setting literature focuses on well-established democracies. This edited volume offers a ground-breaking analysis of a hitherto less examined topic in comparative politics: the dynamics of policy agendas in Socialist autocracy and in hybrid regimes. We propose that policymaking in authoritarian and illiberal regimes is different from the practices of democracies which we analyse based on a unique historical policy agendas database built by the Hungarian CAP team at the Centre for Social Sciences in Budapest. We find that punctuated equilibrium theory offers a good description of policy dynamics regardless of policy regimes, yet punctuations are more pronounced in autocratic and illiberal settings. These regime types also share a tendency towards centralization, a less efficient use of public information and a suppression of democratic participation in the policy process. This book may be of interest to scholars and students of policy studies, agenda-setting and the politics of authoritarianism.

The European Parliament Election of 2019 in East-Central Europe - Second-Order Euroscepticism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Vit... The European Parliament Election of 2019 in East-Central Europe - Second-Order Euroscepticism (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Vit Hlousek, Petr Kaniok
R3,721 Discovery Miles 37 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides an analysis of the European Parliament elections 2019 with a focus on East-Central European countries. The authors offer conceptual insights into Euroscepticism and discuss traditionally familiar concepts in a new light, pairing East-Central European Euroscepticism with visions of illiberal democracy, on the one hand, and showing the increasing Europeanisation of Eurosceptic parties in the region, on the other. The book combines a fresh and innovative conceptual treatment with rich and accurate empirical evidence in order to highlight the dynamics of Euroscepticism in "new" EU member states. Students and experts interested in EU politics, within academia and beyond, will find this volume particularly informative.

Dimensions of Constitutional Democracy - India and Germany (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Anupama Roy, Michael Becker Dimensions of Constitutional Democracy - India and Germany (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Anupama Roy, Michael Becker
R2,957 Discovery Miles 29 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines a selection of themes that have become salient in contemporary debates on constitutional democracies. It focuses in particular on the experiences of India and Germany as examples of post-war and post-colonial constitutional democracies whose trajectories illustrate democratic transitions and transformative constitutionalism. While transformative constitutionalism has come to be associated specifically with the post-apartheid experience in South Africa, this book uses the transformative as an analytical framework to transcend the dichotomy of west and east and explore how temporally coincident constitutions have sought to install constitutional democracies by breaking with the past. While the constitution-making processes in the two countries were specific to their political contexts, the constitutional promises and futures converged. In this context, the book explores the themes of Constitutionalism, Nationalism, Secularism, Sovereignty and Rule of Law, Freedoms and Rights, to investigate how the contestations over democratic transitions and democratic futures have unfolded in the two democracies. It offers readers valuable insights into how the normative frameworks of constitutional democracy take concrete form at specific sites of democratic and constitutional imagination in Dalit and Islamic writings, as well as the relationship between state and religion in the writings of public intellectuals, political and legal philosophers. The book also focuses on specific sites of contestation in democracies including the relationship between sovereignty and citizenship in post-colonial India, free speech and sedition in liberal democracies, questions of land rights in connection with economic and political changes in contemporary contexts, and the rights of indigenous communities with regard to international conventions and domestic law. Given its scope, it will be of interest to students and scholars of political theory, political philosophy, comparative constitutionalism, law and human rights.

Structural Change in Africa - Misperceptions, New Narratives and Development in the 21st Century (Paperback): Carlos Lopes,... Structural Change in Africa - Misperceptions, New Narratives and Development in the 21st Century (Paperback)
Carlos Lopes, George Kararach
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Debates on African development continue to downplay the achievement of the continent: economic achievements are diminished and the perception of a conflict prone continent continues. Many of the policy prescriptions externally imposed on African countries have done little to transform the continent largely because they have been conceived and applied without context. Using literature from diverse origins, this book expands our knowledge about Africa and makes practical suggestions as to how successful development in a complex, yet dynamic continent can be achieved. Widening the policy dialogue and providing alternative thinking on the key elements and full extent of opportunities and challenges towards achieving the socio-economic transformation of Africa, the book moves the debate from the rhetoric to reality. As a considered reflection on the 'Africa's transformation' narrative, it outlines the practical pathways necessary for Africa's sustainable development, providing policy makers and researchers with tested solutions. It will be of interest to all scholars, students and policy professionals working in African development, public policy, international political economy, economic policy and politics.
