Moduli of Riemann Surfaces, Real Algebraic Curves, and Their Superanalogs (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Moduli of Riemann Surfaces, Real Algebraic Curves, and Their Superanalogs (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
R4,092 Discovery Miles 40 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The space of all Riemann surfaces (the so-called moduli space) plays an important role in algebraic geometry and its applications to quantum field theory. The present book is devoted to the study of topological properties of this space and of similar moduli spaces, such as the space of real algebraic curves, the space of mappings, and also superanalogs of all these spaces. The book can be used by researchers and graduate students working in algebraic geometry, topology, and mathematical physics.

Meromorphic Functions and Linear Algebra (Hardcover, New ed.): Meromorphic Functions and Linear Algebra (Hardcover, New ed.)
R1,682 Discovery Miles 16 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume describes for the first time in monograph form important applications in numerical methods of linear algebra. The author presents new material and extended results from recent papers in a very readable style. The main goal of the book is to study the behavior of the resolvent of a matrix under the perturbation by low rank matrices. Whereas the eigenvalues (the poles of the resolvent) and the pseudospectra (the sets where the resolvent takes large values) can move dramatically under such perturbations, the growth of the resolvent as a matrix-valued meromorphic function remains essentially unchanged. This has practical implications to the analysis of iterative solvers for large systems of linear algebraic equations.First, the book introduces the basics of value distribution theory of meromorphic scalar functions. It then introduces a new nonlinear tool for linear algebra, the total logarithmic size of a matrix, which allows for a nontrivial generalization of Rolf Nevanlinna's characteristic function from the scalar theory to matrix- and operator-valued functions. In particular, the theory of perturbations by low rank matrices becomes possible. As an example, if the spectrum of a normal matrix collapses under a low rank perturbation, there is always a compensation in terms of the loss of orthogonality of the eigenvectors. This qualitative phenomenon is made quantitative by using the new tool. Applications are given to rational approximation, to the Kreiss matrix theorem, and to convergence of Krylov solvers. The book is intended for researchers in mathematics in general and especially for those working in numerical linear algebra. Much of the book is understandable if the reader has a good background in linear algebra and a first course in complex analysis.

Operators, Functions, and Systems, Volume 1; Hardy, Hankel, and Toeplitz - An Easy Reading (Paperback): Nikolai K. Nikolski Operators, Functions, and Systems, Volume 1; Hardy, Hankel, and Toeplitz - An Easy Reading (Paperback)
Nikolai K. Nikolski
R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Together with the companion volume by the same author, Operators, Functions, and Systems: An Easy Reading. Volume 2: Model Operators and Systems, Mathematical Surveys and Monographs, Vol. 93, AMS, 2002, this unique work combines four major topics of modern analysis and its applications: A. Hardy classes of holomorphic functions; B. Spectral theory of Hankel and Toeplitz operators; C. Function models for linear operators and free interpolations; and D. Infinite-dimensional system theory and signal processing. This volume contains Parts A and B. Hardy classes of holomorphic functions is known to be the most powerful tool in complex analysis for a variety of applications, starting with Fourier series, through the Riemann $\zeta$-function, all the way to Wiener's theory of signal processing. Spectral theory of Hankel and Toeplitz operators becomes the supporting pillar for a large part of harmonic and complex analysis and for many of their applications. In this book, moment problems, Nevanlinna-Pick and Caratheodory interpolation, and the best rational approximations are considered to illustrate the power of Hankel and Toeplitz operators. The book is geared toward a wide audience of readers, from graduate students to professional mathematicians, interested in operator theory and functions of a complex variable. The two volumes develop an elementary approach while retaining an expert level that can be applied in advanced analysis and selected applications. Table of Contents: An invitation to Hardy classes/Contents: Foreword to Part A; Invariant subspaces of $L^2(\mu)$; First applications; $H^p$ classes. Canonical factorization; Szego infimum, and generalized Phragmen-Lindelof principle; Harmonic analysis in $L^2(\mathbb{T},\mu)$; Transfer to the half-plane; Time-invariant filtering; Distance formulae and zeros of the Riemann $\zeta$-function. Value Distribution Theory and Complex Dynamics - Proceedings of the Special Session on Value Distribution Theory and Complex... Value Distribution Theory and Complex Dynamics - Proceedings of the Special Session on Value Distribution Theory and Complex Dynamics Held at the First Joint International Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Hong Kong Mathematical Society : Hong Kong, December 13-16, 2000 (Paperback)
R3,224 Discovery Miles 32 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume contains six detailed papers written by participants of the special session on value distribution theory and complex dynamics held in Hong Kong at the First Joint International Meeting of the AMS and the Hong Kong Mathematical Society in December 2000. It demonstrates the strong interconnections between the two fields and introduces recent progress of leading researchers from Asia. In the book, W. Bergweiler discusses proper analytic maps with one critical point and generalizes a previous result concerning Leau domains. W. Cherry and J. Wang discuss non-Archimedean analogs of Picard's theorems.P.-C. Hu and C.-C. Yang give a survey of results in non-Archimedean value distribution theory related to unique range sets, the $abc$-conjecture, and Shiffman's conjecture. L. Keen and J. Kotus explore the dynamics of the family of $f_\lambda(z)=\lambda\tan(z)$ and show that it has much in common with the dynamics of the familiar quadratic family $f_c(z)=z^2+c$. R. Oudkerk discusses the interesting phenomenon known as parabolic implosion and, in particular, shows the persistence of Fatou coordinates under perturbation. Finally, M. Taniguchi discusses deformation spaces of entire functions and their combinatorial structure of singularities of the functions. The book is intended for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in complex dynamics, function theory, and non-Archimedean function theory.

Introduction to Complex Variables and Applications (Hardcover): Mark J. Ablowitz, Athanassios S. Fokas Introduction to Complex Variables and Applications (Hardcover)
Mark J. Ablowitz, Athanassios S. Fokas
R2,412 Discovery Miles 24 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The study of complex variables is beautiful from a purely mathematical point of view, and very useful for solving a wide array of problems arising in applications. This introduction to complex variables, suitable as a text for a one-semester course, has been written for undergraduate students in applied mathematics, science, and engineering. Based on the authors' extensive teaching experience, it covers topics of keen interest to these students, including ordinary differential equations, as well as Fourier and Laplace transform methods for solving partial differential equations arising in physical applications. Many worked examples, applications, and exercises are included. With this foundation, students can progress beyond the standard course and explore a range of additional topics, including generalized Cauchy theorem, Painleve equations, computational methods, and conformal mapping with circular arcs. Advanced topics are labeled with an asterisk and can be included in the syllabus or form the basis for challenging student projects.

Lecture Notes on Wavelet Transforms (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Lokenath Debnath, Firdous Shah Lecture Notes on Wavelet Transforms (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Lokenath Debnath, Firdous Shah
R2,045 Discovery Miles 20 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a systematic exposition of the basic ideas and results of wavelet analysis suitable for mathematicians, scientists, and engineers alike. The primary goal of this text is to show how different types of wavelets can be constructed, illustrate why they are such powerful tools in mathematical analysis, and demonstrate their use in applications. It also develops the required analytical knowledge and skills on the part of the reader, rather than focus on the importance of more abstract formulation with full mathematical rigor. These notes differs from many textbooks with similar titles in that a major emphasis is placed on the thorough development of the underlying theory before introducing applications and modern topics such as fractional Fourier transforms, windowed canonical transforms, fractional wavelet transforms, fast wavelet transforms, spline wavelets, Daubechies wavelets, harmonic wavelets and non-uniform wavelets. The selection, arrangement, and presentation of the material in these lecture notes have carefully been made based on the authors' teaching, research and professional experience. Drafts of these lecture notes have been used successfully by the authors in their own courses on wavelet transforms and their applications at the University of Texas Pan-American and the University of Kashmir in India.
