Green Photonics and Electronics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Gadi Eisenstein, Dieter Bimberg Green Photonics and Electronics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Gadi Eisenstein, Dieter Bimberg
R4,027 Discovery Miles 40 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This books focuses on recent break-throughs in the development of a variety of photonic devices, serving distances ranging from mm to many km, together with their electronic counter-parts, e.g. the drivers for lasers, the amplifiers following the detectors and most important, the relevant advanced VLSI circuits. It explains that as a consequence of the increasing dominance of optical interconnects for high performance workstation clusters and supercomputers their complete design has to be revised. This book thus covers for the first time the whole variety of interdependent subjects contributing to green photonics and electronics, serving communication and energy harvesting. Alternative approaches to generate electric power using organic photovoltaic solar cells, inexpensive and again energy efficient in production are summarized. In 2015, the use of the internet consumed 5-6% of the raw electricity production in developed countries. Power consumption increases rapidly and without some transformational change will use, by the middle of the next decade at the latest, the entire electricity production. This apocalyptic outlook led to a redirection of the focus of data center and HPC developers from just increasing bit rates and capacities to energy efficiency. The high speed interconnects are all based on photonic devices. These must and can be energy efficient but they operate in an electronic environment and therefore have to be considered in a wide scope that also requires low energy electronic devices, sophisticated circuit designs and clever architectures. The development of the next generation of high performance exaFLOP computers suffers from the same problem: Their energy consumption based on present device generations is essentially prohibitive.

Enabling Technologies for Effective Planning and Management in Sustainable Smart Cities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Mohd Abdul... Enabling Technologies for Effective Planning and Management in Sustainable Smart Cities (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Mohd Abdul Ahad, Gabriella Casalino, Bharat Bhushan
R4,584 Discovery Miles 45 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the rapid penetration of technology in varied application domains, the existing cities are getting connected more seamlessly. Cities becomes smart by inducing ICT in the classical city infrastructure for its management. According to McKenzie Report, about 68% of the world population will migrate towards urban settlements in near future. This migration is largely because of the improved Quality of Life (QoL) and livelihood in urban settlements. In the light of urbanization, climate change, democratic flaws, and rising urban welfare expenditures, smart cities have emerged as an important approach for society's future development. Smart cities have achieved enhanced QoL by giving smart information to people regarding healthcare, transportation, smart parking, smart traffic structure, smart home, smart agronomy, community security etc. Typically, in smart cities data is sensed by the sensor devices and provided to end users for further use. The sensitive data is transferred with the help of internet creating higher chances for the adversaries to breach the data. Considering the privacy and security as the area of prime focus, this book covers the most prominent security vulnerabilities associated with varied application areas like healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, education and agriculture etc. Furthermore, the massive amount of data being generated through ubiquitous sensors placed across the smart cities needs to be handled in an effective, efficient, secured and privacy preserved manner. Since a typical smart city ecosystem is data driven, it is imperative to manage this data in an optimal manner. Enabling technologies like Internet of Things (IoT), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Blockchain Technology, Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Computer vision, Big Data Analytics, Next Generation Networks and Software Defined Networks (SDN) provide exemplary benefits if they are integrated in the classical city ecosystem in an effective manner. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is expanding across many domains in the smart city, such as infrastructure, transportation, environmental protection, power and energy, privacy and security, governance, data management, healthcare, and more. AI has the potential to improve human health, prosperity, and happiness by reducing our reliance on manual labor and accelerating our progress in the sciences and technologies. NLP is an extensive domain of AI and is used in collaboration with machine learning and deep learning algorithms for clinical informatics and data processing. In modern smart cities, blockchain provides a complete framework that controls the city operations and ensures that they are managed as effectively as possible. Besides having an impact on our daily lives, it also facilitates many areas of city management.

Arrays, Functional Languages, and Parallel Systems (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): Lenore M.Restifo Mullin Arrays, Functional Languages, and Parallel Systems (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
Lenore M.Restifo Mullin; Contributions by Michael Jenkins, Gaetan Hains, Robert Bernecky, Guang R. Gao
R4,331 Discovery Miles 43 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During a meeting in Toronto last winter, Mike Jenkins, Bob Bernecky and I were discussing how the two existing theories on arrays influenced or were in fluenced by programming languages and systems. More's Army Theory was the basis for NIAL and APL2 and Mullin's A Mathematics of A rmys(MOA), is being used as an algebra of arrays in functional and A-calculus based pro gramming languages. MOA was influenced by Iverson's initial and extended algebra, the foundations for APL and J respectively. We discussed that there is a lot of interest in the Computer Science and Engineering communities concerning formal methods for languages that could support massively parallel operations in scientific computing, a back to-roots interest for both Mike and myself. Languages for this domain can no longer be informally developed since it is necessary to map languages easily to many multiprocessor architectures. Software systems intended for parallel computation require a formal basis so that modifications can be done with relative ease while ensuring integrity in design. List based lan guages are profiting from theoretical foundations such as the Bird-Meertens formalism. Their theory has been successfully used to describe list based parallel algorithms across many classes of architectures."

BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics - How to Program and Use Your Microcomputer for Data Analysis in the Physical and Life... BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics - How to Program and Use Your Microcomputer for Data Analysis in the Physical and Life Sciences, Including Medicine (Hardcover, 1983 ed.)
Donald W. Rogers
R2,953 Discovery Miles 29 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics is designed as the first practical "how to" guide to both computer programming in BASIC and the statis tical data processing techniques needed to analyze experimental, clinical, and other numerical data. It provides a small vocabulary of essential com puter statements and shows how they are used to solve problems in the bio logical, physical, and medical sciences. No mathematical background be yond algebra and an inkling of the principles of calculus is assumed. All more advanced mathematical techniques are developed from "scratch" before they are used. The computing language is BASIC, a high-level lan guage that is easy to learn and widely available using time-sharing com puter systems and personal microcomputers. The strategy of the book is to present computer programming at the outset and to use it throughout. BASIC is developed in a way reminiscent of graded readers used in human languages; the first programs are so sim ple that they can be read almost without an introduction to the language. Each program thereafter contains new vocabulary and one or more con cepts, explained in the text, not used in the previous ones. By gradual stages, the reader can progress from programs that do nothing more than count from one to ten to sophisticated programs for nonlinear curve fitting, matrix algebra, and multiple regression. There are 33 working programs and, except for the introductory ones, each performs a useful function in everyday data processing problems encountered by the experimentalist in many diverse fields."

Internet of Things and the Law - Legal Strategies for Consumer-Centric Smart Technologies (Hardcover): Guido Noto La Diega Internet of Things and the Law - Legal Strategies for Consumer-Centric Smart Technologies (Hardcover)
Guido Noto La Diega
R3,640 Discovery Miles 36 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Internet of Things and the Law: Legal Strategies for Consumer-Centric Smart Technologies is the most comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the legal issues in the Internet of Things (IoT). For decades, the decreasing importance of tangible wealth and power - and the increasing significance of their disembodied counterparts - has been the subject of much legal research. For some time now, legal scholars have grappled with how laws drafted for tangible property and predigital 'offline' technologies can cope with dematerialisation, digitalisation, and the internet. As dematerialisation continues, this book aims to illuminate the opposite movement: rematerialisation, namely, the return of data, knowledge, and power within a physical 'smart' world. This development frames the book's central question: can the law steer rematerialisation in a human-centric and socially just direction? To answer it, the book focuses on the IoT, the sociotechnological phenomenon that is primarily responsible for this shift. After a thorough analysis of how existing laws can be interpreted to empower IoT end users, Noto La Diega leaves us with the fundamental question of what happens when the law fails us and concludes with a call for collective resistance against 'smart' capitalism.
