Home Computers - 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation (Hardcover): Alex Wiltshire Home Computers - 100 Icons that Defined a Digital Generation (Hardcover)
Alex Wiltshire; Photographs by John Short
R979 R841 Discovery Miles 8 410 Save R138 (14%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A celebration of the early years of the digital revolution, when computing power was deployed in a beige box on your desk.Today, people carry powerful computers in our pockets and call them "phones." A generation ago, people were amazed that the processing power of a mainframe computer could be contained in a beige box on a desk. This book is a celebration of those early home computers, with specially commissioned new photographs of 100 vintage computers and a generous selection of print advertising, product packaging, and instruction manuals. Readers can recapture the glory days of fondly remembered (or happily forgotten) machines including the Commodore 64, TRS-80, Apple Lisa, and Mattel Aquarius--traces of the techno-utopianism of the not-so-distant past. Home Computers showcases mass-market success stories, rarities, prototypes, one-offs, and never-before-seen specimens. The heart of the book is a series of artful photographs that capture idiosyncratic details of switches and plugs, early user-interface designs, logos, and labels. After a general scene-setting retrospective, the book proceeds computer by computer, with images of each device accompanied by a short history of the machine, its inventors, its innovations, and its influence. Readers who inhabit today's always-on, networked, inescapably connected world will be charmed by this visit to an era when the digital revolution could be powered down every evening.

Principles of High-Performance Processor Design - For High Performance Computing, Deep Neural Networks and Data Science... Principles of High-Performance Processor Design - For High Performance Computing, Deep Neural Networks and Data Science (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Junichiro Makino
R5,245 Discovery Miles 52 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes how we can design and make efficient processors for high-performance computing, AI, and data science. Although there are many textbooks on the design of processors we do not have a widely accepted definition of the efficiency of a general-purpose computer architecture. Without a definition of the efficiency, it is difficult to make scientific approach to the processor design. In this book, a clear definition of efficiency is given and thus a scientific approach for processor design is made possible. In chapter 2, the history of the development of high-performance processor is overviewed, to discuss what quantity we can use to measure the efficiency of these processors. The proposed quantity is the ratio between the minimum possible energy consumption and the actual energy consumption for a given application using a given semiconductor technology. In chapter 3, whether or not this quantity can be used in practice is discussed, for many real-world applications. In chapter 4, general-purpose processors in the past and present are discussed from this viewpoint. In chapter 5, how we can actually design processors with near-optimal efficiencies is described, and in chapter 6 how we can program such processors. This book gives a new way to look at the field of the design of high-performance processors.

Energy-Efficient Modular Exponential Techniques for Public-Key Cryptography - Efficient Modular Exponential Techniques... Energy-Efficient Modular Exponential Techniques for Public-Key Cryptography - Efficient Modular Exponential Techniques (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Satyanarayana Vollala, N. Ramasubramanian, Utkarsh Tiwari
R5,277 Discovery Miles 52 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cryptographic applications, such as RSA algorithm, ElGamal cryptography, elliptic curve cryptography, Rabin cryptosystem, Diffie -Hellmann key exchange algorithm, and the Digital Signature Standard, use modular exponentiation extensively. The performance of all these applications strongly depends on the efficient implementation of modular exponentiation and modular multiplication. Since 1984, when Montgomery first introduced a method to evaluate modular multiplications, many algorithmic modifications have been done for improving the efficiency of modular multiplication, but very less work has been done on the modular exponentiation to improve the efficiency. This research monograph addresses the question- how can the performance of modular exponentiation, which is the crucial operation of many public-key cryptographic techniques, be improved? The book focuses on Energy Efficient Modular Exponentiations for Cryptographic hardware. Spread across five chapters, this well-researched text focuses in detail on the Bit Forwarding Techniques and the corresponding hardware realizations. Readers will also discover advanced performance improvement techniques based on high radix multiplication and Cryptographic hardware based on multi-core architectures.

Android Malware Detection using Machine Learning - Data-Driven Fingerprinting and Threat Intelligence (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Android Malware Detection using Machine Learning - Data-Driven Fingerprinting and Threat Intelligence (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
ElMouatez Billah Karbab, Mourad Debbabi, Abdelouahid Derhab, Djedjiga Mouheb
R5,257 Discovery Miles 52 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors develop a malware fingerprinting framework to cover accurate android malware detection and family attribution in this book. The authors emphasize the following: (1) the scalability over a large malware corpus; (2) the resiliency to common obfuscation techniques; (3) the portability over different platforms and architectures. First, the authors propose an approximate fingerprinting technique for android packaging that captures the underlying static structure of the android applications in the context of bulk and offline detection at the app-market level. This book proposes a malware clustering framework to perform malware clustering by building and partitioning the similarity network of malicious applications on top of this fingerprinting technique. Second, the authors propose an approximate fingerprinting technique that leverages dynamic analysis and natural language processing techniques to generate Android malware behavior reports. Based on this fingerprinting technique, the authors propose a portable malware detection framework employing machine learning classification. Third, the authors design an automatic framework to produce intelligence about the underlying malicious cyber-infrastructures of Android malware. The authors then leverage graph analysis techniques to generate relevant intelligence to identify the threat effects of malicious Internet activity associated with android malware. The authors elaborate on an effective android malware detection system, in the online detection context at the mobile device level. It is suitable for deployment on mobile devices, using machine learning classification on method call sequences. Also, it is resilient to common code obfuscation techniques and adaptive to operating systems and malware change overtime, using natural language processing and deep learning techniques. Researchers working in mobile and network security, machine learning and pattern recognition will find this book useful as a reference. Advanced-level students studying computer science within these topic areas will purchase this book as well.

Understanding Linux Network Internals (Paperback): Christian Benvenuti Understanding Linux Network Internals (Paperback)
Christian Benvenuti
R1,515 R1,091 Discovery Miles 10 910 Save R424 (28%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If you've ever wondered how Linux carries out the complicated tasks assigned to it by the IP protocols -- or if you just want to learn about modern networking through real-life examples -- Understanding Linux Network Internals is for you. Like the popular O'Reilly book, Understanding the Linux Kernel, this book clearly explains the underlying concepts and teaches you how to follow the actual C code that implements it. Although some background in the TCP/IP protocols is helpful, you can learn a great deal from this text about the protocols themselves and their uses. And if you already have a base knowledge of C, you can use the book's code walkthroughs to figure out exactly what this sophisticated part of the Linux kernel is doing. Part of the difficulty in understanding networks -- and implementing them -- is that the tasks are broken up and performed at many different times by different pieces of code. One of the strengths of this book is to integrate the pieces and reveal the relationships between far-flung functions and data structures. Understanding Linux Network Internals is both a big-picture discussion and a no-nonsense guide to the details of Linux networking. Topics include: * Key problems with networking * Network interface card (NIC) device drivers * System initialization * Layer 2 (link-layer) tasks and implementation * Layer 3 (IPv4) tasks and implementation * Neighbor infrastructure and protocols (ARP) * Bridging * Routing * ICMP Author Christian Benvenuti, an operating system designer specializing in networking, explains much more than how Linux code works. He shows the purposes of major networking features and the trade-offs involved in choosing one solution over another. A large number of flowcharts and other diagrams enhance the book's understandability.
