Social Science Microsimulation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1996): Klaus G. Troitzsch, Ulrich Mueller,... Social Science Microsimulation (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1996)
Klaus G. Troitzsch, Ulrich Mueller, Nigel Gilbert, Jim E. Doran
R4,062 Discovery Miles 40 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book gives an overview of the state of the art in five different approaches to social science simulation on the individual level. The volume contains microanalytical simulation models designed for policy implementation and evaluation, multilevel simulation methods designed for detecting emergent phenomena, dynamical game theory applications, the use of cellular automata to explain the emergence of structure in social systems, and multi-agent models using the experience from distributed artificial intelligence applied to special phenomena. The book collects the results of an international conference which brought together social scientists and computer scientists both engaged in a wide range of simulation approaches for the first time.

Simulation and Inference for Stochastic Differential Equations - With R Examples (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st... Simulation and Inference for Stochastic Differential Equations - With R Examples (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Stefano M. Iacus
R3,108 Discovery Miles 31 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book covers a highly relevant and timely topic that is of wide interest, especially in finance, engineering and computational biology. The introductory material on simulation and stochastic differential equation is very accessible and will prove popular with many readers. While there are several recent texts available that cover stochastic differential equations, the concentration here on inference makes this book stand out. No other direct competitors are known to date. With an emphasis on the practical implementation of the simulation and estimation methods presented, the text will be useful to practitioners and students with minimal mathematical background. What's more, because of the many R programs, the information here is appropriate for many mathematically well educated practitioners, too.

Computational Methods in Mechanical Systems - Mechanism Analysis, Synthesis, and Optimization (Paperback, Softcover reprint of... Computational Methods in Mechanical Systems - Mechanism Analysis, Synthesis, and Optimization (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998)
Jorge Angeles, Evtim Zakhariev
R4,052 Discovery Miles 40 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The chapters of this book summarize the lectures delivered du ring the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Computational Methods in Mechanisms, that took place in the Sts. Constantin and Elena Resort, near Varna, on the Bulgarian Coast of the Black Sea, June 16-28, 1997. The purpose of the ASI was to bring together leading researchers in the area of mechanical systems at large, with special emphasis in the computational issues around their analysis, synthesis, and optimization, during two weeks of lectures and discussion. A total of 89 participants from 23 count ries played an active role during the lectures and sessions of contributed papers. Many of the latter are being currently reviewed for publication in specialized journals. The subject of the book is mechanical systems, Le., systems composed of rigid and flexible bodies, coupled by mechanical means so as to constrain their various bodies in a goal-oriented manner, usually driven under computer con trol. Applications of the discipline are thus of the most varied nature, ranging from transportation systems to biomedical devices. U nder normal operation conditions, the constitutive bodies of a mechanical system can be consid ered to be rigid, the rigidity property then easing dramatically the analysis of the kinematics and dynamics of the system at hand. Examples of these systems are the suspension of a terrestrial vehicle negotiating a curve at speeds within the allowed or recommended limits and the links of multiaxis industrial robots performing conventional pick-and-place operations."

More advanced concepts such as distributed systems and examples of how to build these systems are presented in the last chapter of the book.

The book presents a step-by-step approach for modeling agricultural systems, starting with a conceptual diagram representing elements of the system and their relationships. Furthermore, diagrams such as sequential and collaboration diagrams are used to explain the dynamic and static aspects of the software system.

Handbook of Mathematical Models in Computer Vision (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006): Nikos Paragios,... Handbook of Mathematical Models in Computer Vision (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Nikos Paragios, Yunmei Chen, Olivier D. Faugeras
R2,746 Discovery Miles 27 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Abstract Biological vision is a rather fascinating domain of research. Scientists of various origins like biology, medicine, neurophysiology, engineering, math ematics, etc. aim to understand the processes leading to visual perception process and at reproducing such systems. Understanding the environment is most of the time done through visual perception which appears to be one of the most fundamental sensory abilities in humans and therefore a significant amount of research effort has been dedicated towards modelling and repro ducing human visual abilities. Mathematical methods play a central role in this endeavour. Introduction David Marr's theory v DEGREESas a pioneering step tov DEGREESards understanding visual percep tion. In his view human vision was based on a complete surface reconstruction of the environment that was then used to address visual subtasks. This approach was proven to be insufficient by neuro-biologists and complementary ideas from statistical pattern recognition and artificial intelligence were introduced to bet ter address the visual perception problem. In this framework visual perception is represented by a set of actions and rules connecting these actions. The emerg ing concept of active vision consists of a selective visual perception paradigm that is basically equivalent to recovering from the environment the minimal piece information required to address a particular task of interest."

Simulating and Generating Motions of Human Figures (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004): Katsu Yamane Simulating and Generating Motions of Human Figures (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2004)
Katsu Yamane
R2,622 Discovery Miles 26 220 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on two issues related to human figures: realtime dynamics computation and interactive motion generation. In spite of the growing interest in human figures as both physical robots and virtual characters, standard algorithms and tools for their kinematics and dynamics computation have not been investigated very much. "Simulating and Generating Motions of Human Figures" presents original algorithms to simulate, analyze, generate and control motions of human figures, all focusing on realtime and interactive computation. The book provides both practical methods for contact/collision simulation essential for the simulation of humanoid robots and virtual characters and a general framework for online, interactive motion generation of human figures based on the dynamics simulation algorithms.

A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st... A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2005)
Silvia T Acuna, Natalia Juristo, Ana Maria Moreno, Alicia Mon
R4,004 Discovery Miles 40 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities offers the most advanced approach to date, empirically validated at software development organizations. This handbook adds a valuable contribution to the much-needed literature on people-related aspects in software engineering. The primary focus is on the particular challenge of extending software process definitions to more explicitly address people-related considerations.

The capability concept is not present nor has it been considered in most software process models. The authors have developed a capabilities-oriented software process model, which has been formalized in UML and implemented as a tool. A Software Process Model Handbook for Incorporating People's Capabilities guides readers through the incorporation of the individual's capabilities into the software process.

Structured to meet the needs of research scientists and graduate-level students in computer science and engineering, this book is also suitable for practitioners in industry.
