Conjuring Science explores the history of magic shows and
scientific entertainment. It follows the frictions and connections
of magic and science as they occurred in the world of popular
entertainment in France from the mid-eighteenth to the early
twentieth century. It situates conjurers within the broader culture
of science and argues that stage magic formed an important popular
conduit for science and scientific enthusiasm during this period.
From the scientific recreations of the fairs to the grand illusions
of the theatre stage and the development of early cinema, conjurers
used and were inspired by scientific and technological innovations
to create illusions, provoke a sense of wonder, and often even
instruct their audience. In their hands, science took on many
meanings and served different purposes: it was a set of pleasant
facts and recreational demonstrations upon which to draw; it was
the knowledge presented in various scientific lectures accompanied
by optical projections at magic shows; it was the techniques
necessary to create illusions and effects on stage and later on at
the cinema; and it was a way to separate conjuring from the deceit
of mediums, mystical showmen and quacks in order to gain a better
standing within an increasingly scientifically-minded society.
First published in 1976. This title brings the Victorian era to
life with stories of its spectacular leading magicians, conjurers,
illusionists, escapologists, scientific experimenters and
tricksters. Geoffrey Lamb describes the kind of people they were
and the kind of things they did, whilst keeping intact the mystery
surrounding their feats. This skilful reconstruction of this branch
of nineteenth-century entertainment gives us a fascinating insight
into Victorians and how they liked to be amused. This title will be
of interest to students of history.

The mysterious art of magic has been a source of wonderment since
before the time of Christ. Shape shifting between the supernatural
practices of 'real' magic and demonstrations of dazzling illusion,
magic has been used to conjure the evil eye, burn villages to the
ground, slice women in half, and save men from being crushed to
death by five tonnes of cement. Robert Ralley's history takes us
deep into this magical underworld to reveal the astounding stories
of some of the world's greatest magicians. From the astrology of
the three wise men to Harry Houdini's escapology, and David Blain's
endurance tests, Ralley illustrates the changing perceptions of
magic and the dangerous balance between illusion, fraud, and
devilry that still exists today.
In the vein of Neil Strauss' The Game and Joshua Foer's Moonwalking
with Einstein comes the fascinating story of one man's colorful,
mysterious, and personal journey into the world of magic, and his
unlikely invitation into an underground secret society of
revolutionary magicians from around the world. Magic Is Dead is Ian
Frisch's head-first dive into a hidden world full of extraordinary
characters and highly guarded secrets. It is a story of
imagination, deception, and art that spotlights today's most
brilliant young magicians-a mysterious club known as the52, who are
revolutionizing an ancient artform under the mantra Magic Is Dead.
Ian brings us with him as he not only gets to know this fascinating
world, but also becomes an integral part of it. We meet the52's
founding members-Laura London, Daniel Madison, and Chris Ramsay-and
explore their personal demons, professional aspirations, and what
drew them to their craft. We join them at private gatherings of the
most extraordinary magicians working today, follow them to magic
conventions in Las Vegas and England, and discover some of the best
tricks of the trade. We also encounter David Blaine; hang out with
Penn Jillette; meet Dynamo, the U.K.'s most famous magician; and go
behind the scenes of a Netflix magic show. Magic Is Dead is also a
chronicle of magic's rich history and how it has changed in the
internet age, as the young guns embrace social media and move away
from the old-school take on the craft. As he tells the story of
the52, and his role as its most unlikely member, Ian reveals his
own connection with trickery and deceit and how he first learned
the elements that make magic work from his poker-playing mother. He
recalls their adventures in card rooms and casinos after his
father's sudden death, and shares a touching moment that he had, as
a working journalist, with his childhood idol Shaquille O'Neal.
"Magic-the romanticism of the inexplicable, the awe and admiration
of the unexpected-is an underlying force in how we view the world
and its myriad possibilities," Ian writes. As his journey
continues, Ian not only becomes a performer and creator of
magic-even fooling the late Anthony Bourdain during a chance
encounter-he also cements a new brotherhood, and begins to
understand his relationship with his father, fifteen years after
his death. Written with psychological acuity and a keen eye for
detail, Magic Is Dead is an engrossing tale full of wonder and
surprise.

Henry Box Brown is well-known in America for remarkably escaping
slavery by being nailed up in a box and posted from Virginia to
Philadelphia. The passing of the Fugitive Slave Act in 1850 made it
unsafe for Brown to remain in America so he relocated to England.
There, he had a very successful career, initially as a speaker on
abolitionism, before he began speaking on other subjects and then
branched out into other forms of entertainment including as a
magician. He married again to Jane Floyd, who, along with their
children, appeared in his acts. With his wife and surviving
children, he returned to America in 1875 finally moving to Canada,
where he died. This book tells his story, concentrating on the
relatively unknown period of his life in Britain, detailing both
how he was received and how he developed as a performer. It is the
biography of a brave, intelligent individualist who was always
willing to learn and to take chances, becoming the first black man
to achieve landmarks in British law and entertainment.

Penn Jillette's New York Times bestselling account of his
"extremely funny and somewhat profane journey to discovering a
healthy lifestyle...that will motivate others to seek weight-loss
solutions" (The Washington Post). More than three hundred and
thirty pounds and saddled with a systolic blood pressure reading at
dangerous heights, legendary magician Penn Jillette found himself
at a crossroads. He needed a drastic lifestyle change if wanted to
see his small children grow up. Enter Crazy Ray. A former NASA
scientist and unconventional, passionate innovator, Ray Cronise
changed Penn Jillette's life with his wild "potato diet." In
Presto, Jillette takes us along on his journey from skepticism to
the inspiring, life-changing momentum that transformed the
magician's body and mind. He describes the process in hilarious
detail, as he performs his Las Vegas show, takes meetings with
Hollywood executives, hangs out with his celebrity friends and
fellow eccentric performers, all while remaining a dedicated
husband and father. Throughout, he weaves in his views on sex,
religion, and pop culture, making his story a refreshing,
genre-busting account. Outspoken, frank, and bitingly clever,
Presto is an incisive, rollicking read. In the end, it is
"undeniably inspiring" (Booklist).
Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin (1805-71) is often called the father of
modern conjuring. His name was later adopted by magician and escape
artist Harry Houdini, whose highly sceptical expose of Victorian
spiritualism is also published in this series. The best-known
magician of his time, Robert-Houdin toured France, England and
Germany, performed for Queen Victoria, and was sent to French
Algeria by Napoleon III to demonstrate the perceived superiority of
French magic to the local shamans. This book, originally published
in 1868, is devoted primarily to coin and card tricks, but
Robert-Houdin also describes many other magical tricks and includes
a history of conjuring. In 1877 the book appeared in this English
translation by Louis Hoffmann (1839-1919). Hoffmann (real name
Angelo John Lewis, a barrister) had published his own guide to
magic in 1876, and both books caused controversy for revealing the
secrets of stage magicians in such unprecedented detail.

Now in paperback, the acclaimed biography of the magician's
magician, Howard Thurston. "There is no greater expert on the
history of stage magicians than Jim Steinmeyer. His deep knowledge
of the subject, combined with a remarkable mastery of magical
know-how, makes this book a smart, fantastic read. I can't
recommend it enough "--Neil Patrick Harris "Steinmeyer produces an
engaging full-length biography of the man Orson Welles called 'the
master'...Steinmeyer recovers, from the shadows of his greatest
rival, a figure whose grandiose productions were an American
institution for almost 30 years."--Publishers Weekly "Magician and
author Jim Steinmeyer rescues a forgotten American icon from
Houdini's shadow."
--AARP: The Magazine "Thurston may have been forgotten, but The
Last Greatest Magician In The World ably resurrects his legend and
his awe-inspiring magic."
--The Onion A.V. Club "An erudite, challenging text full of
difficult questions"
--Kirkus Reviews
Here is the seminal biography of the magician's magician, Howard
Thurston, a man who surpassed Houdini in the eyes of showmen and
fans and set the standard fro how stage magic is performed today.
Everyone knows Houdini-but who was Thurston? In this rich, vivid
biography of the "greatest magician in the world," celebrated
historian of stage magic Jim Steinmeyer captures the career and
controversies of the wonder-worker extraordinaire, Howard Thurston.
The public's fickleness over magicians has left Thurston all but
forgotten today. Yet Steinmeyer shows how his story is one of the
most remarkable in show business. During his life, from 1869 to
1936, Thurston successfully navigated the most dramatic changes in
entertainment-from street performances to sideshows to wagon tours
through America's still-Wild West to stage magic amid the glitter
of grand theaters. Thurston became one of America's most renowned
vaudeville stars, boldly performing an act with just a handful of
playing cards, and then had the foresight to leave vaudeville,
expanding his show into an extravaganza with more than forty tons
of apparatus and costumes. His touring production was an American
institution for nearly thirty years, and Thurston earned a brand
name equal to Ziegfeld or Ringling Brothers. Steinmeyer explores
the stage and psychological rivalry between Thurston and Houdini
during the first decades of the twentieth century-a contest that
Thurston won. He won with a bigger show, a more successful
reputation, and the title of America's greatest magician. In The
Last Greatest Magician in the World, Thurston's magic show is
revealed as the one that animates our collective memories.
The world's greatest and most celebrated magicians, conjurers and illusionists can make us believe the unbelievable, the impossible possible. But, of course, just like everybody else these conjurors had to start at a beginning. They too had to learn simple (but effective) card tricks, easy (but imaginative) coin tricks and basic (but still mind boggling) sleight-of-hand tricks before advancing to more innovative and radical skills and techniques. Amazing Magic Tricks is a cool compendium of diverse tricks to inspire all aspiring magicians to pick up a wand and impress their friends and family! Full of trivia as well as simple illusions to practice, perfect and perform at home, Amazing Magic Tricks will guide you on your way to becoming a master magician quicker than you can say 'Ta-Dah!'.

vanishing and producing an object, using essential apparatus, etc.
Explains hundreds of astonishing tricks -- with coins, cups and
balls, handkerchiefs, cards, more. A book with an excellent
reputation among professional magicians for teaching techniques. 57
illustrations.
