This study examines the various processes and the methods of determining urban stone decay. The contributions include coverage of: spatial variability of dissolution on a limestone surface; ageing of consolidated stone; and techniques for making contemporary copies of stone antiquities.
Churches are valuable not only for their significance within Christian religion, but also because of the historic value of the buildings themselves, and the artistic objects, furnishings and decorative features contained within them. This book explains the techniques and artistry involved in caring for the fabric and contents of churches. It considers the problems of cleaning and repair, and the damage that can be done by over-zealous non-specialists. The contributions to this book are wide-ranging and each chapter is written by a highly regarded specialist in his/her field. In addition to offering guidance on the conservation of stained glass, sculpture, textiles, metalwork, floors, furniture, decorative plaster work, paintings and so on, the book also covers the technical aspects of creating the right environment with the heating, ventilation and lighting of the building. The advice this volume contains should be essential reading for everyone concerned with the care and upkeep of churches.
We live in an age of omnipresent and calculated images; what opportunity have photographers to approach a historically charged prestigious building without the risk of being instrumentalized? Is it possible that photographs and artistic work in an empty building can say more than that the building is temporarily no longer used for its original purpose? In a cooperation project of the University of Applied Arts Vienna with the Directorate of the Austrian Parliament, students of the Department of Applied Photography and Time-Based Media had the opportunity to investigate the historic building at the Ring shortly after parliament had moved out, and to find answers to these questions.
UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory discusses one of the greatest challenges for twenty-first-century society: what is to be done with the huge stock of existing buildings that have outlived the function for which they were built? Their worth is well recognised and the importance of retaining them has been long debated, but if they are to be saved, what is to be done with these redundant buildings? This book argues that remodelling is a healthy and environmentally friendly approach. Issues of heritage, conservation, sustainability and smartness are at the forefront of many discussions about architecture today and adaptive reuse offers the opportunity to reinforce the particular character of an area using up-to-date digital and construction techniques for a contemporary population. Issues of collective memory and identity combined with ideas of tradition, history and culture mean that it is possible to retain a sense of continuity with the past as a way of creating the future. UnDoing Buildings: Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Memory has an international perspective and will be of interest to upper level students and professionals working on the fields of Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Conservation, Urban Design and Development.
A barn door is a gateway to our colonial past, and anyone who has ever marveled at 12-inch hand hewn beams pegged together centuries ago will love this book. Part personal quest, part historical survey, and part armchair adventure through the lore of American barns, Old Barns in the New World is a must for barn lovers and history buffs alike! Richard Babcock and his sons have used original colonial tools and methods to move, renovate, and restore literally dozens of barns throughout the United States. Lauren Stevens is an acclaimed author and conservationist who has written several books including Hikes and Walks in the Berkshire Hills (Berkshire House), Most Excellent Majesty: A History of Mount Greylock (Berkshire House), and others.
The design of renovations is like any other building design, but more complicated, because the questions that architects and engineers face in the process are complicated by the existing building's form, materials, peculiarities of age, and construction. The Design of Renovations outlines the basic pertinent principles of design and construction and explains how to apply them to renovation that meets the physical and aesthetic needs of the job, given the constraints of the materials involved. Dozens of actual case studies illustrate the practical application of the theory, methods, and procedures.

English summary: Bruno Bearzi's life was intricately involved with the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery and other bronze Renaissance works that he worked to restore for over fifty years. This faithful chronicle uses Bearzi's own archives and writings, while also providing rich images to complete the story of his contribution to our artistic heritage. Italian text.

The main focus of the book is on materials used in infrastructure, energy, buildings and industry. The book in effect establishes the definition of ageing and its main research topics that are relevant for society.

Despite being South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria has often played a supporting role to bold and brash Johannesburg and Cape Town’s cosmopolitan charms. However, when it comes to architectural heritage, the ‘Jacaranda City’ is well-endowed. From the skyline-dominating Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument, to the imposing edifices that make up its administrative precincts, Pretoria might almost be deserving of a second moniker: the city of sandstone, brick and granite. But when you look beyond the impressive façades, soaring columns and linear planes of buildings that were intended to convey power and authority, you’ll find light-filled interiors embellished with decorative touches that are only hinted at from the pavement. Murals, mosaics, domes, galleries, stained glass windows, gleaming brass and impressive woodwork are often hidden from view behind doors that are closed to the public. Even those museums, buildings and places of worship that are open to all have architectural and design features that are easily overlooked unless they’ve been pointed out. The history of the city and, often, the country too, has been played out in many of the places featured in Hidden Pretoria. This story of our shared heritage deserves to be captured for a new generation so that they recognize the value in the built environment and the need to preserve the past in order to protect the future. |
