This book is an architectural and social history of a unique 19th century mansion. It tells the story of Estemere's owners and families and the various ways the house has been utilized from the time it was built. It has been the vacation home of a millionaire mine owner and operator, Eben Smith, and his family; hosted a summer school for a Kansas college; a camp for underprivileged girls; a weaving school for women during the New Deal; a tourist lodge; and several times a private residence. Townspeople, children, the socially prominent, business and religious leaders, laborers, students, and ordinary travelers-all have passed through her doors at one time or another and made the acquaintance of "Lady Estemere." The book also describes changes in the structure and furnishings of the main house through the years. Kim and Roger Ward purchased Estemere in 1998, and the book documents the extensive work the Wards have carried out to restore and upgrade this beautiful Queen Anne Victorian home and its outbuildings to a grandeur unequalled in its history. Thus, Estemere, after 125 years, once again stands proudly as the "Crown Jewel" of Palmer Lake.

..".to know just how to handle and manipulate the saw or the plane or the chisel to effect the desired result with a minimum of effort and without injury to either tool or material - that is knowledge worth having..." Woodwork Tools was published c1922 as part of The Woodworker Series, by Evans Bros., London. Authored by William Fairham, a well-respected practicing woodworker and technical school instructor. Woodwork Tools introduces both the basics of hand tool use as well as advanced techniques. Intended for Manual Arts classes, Woodwork Tools presents the practical skills needed by woodworkers of any skill levels.
Structures that are essential for economy and security such as energy production, transportation and supply, water supply, buildings, are susceptible to failure, because of defects already present in the material, or created at fabrication, or appearing during service. Methods of assesment of the nocivity of these defects are needed, to predict the remaining service life and the eventual emergency of stopping service and repairing, if possible. To reach this objectives, this book presents the last methods derived from the classical linear, non-linear fracture mechanics concepts, including fatigue and notch fracture mechanics. Several examples of structures rehabilitations and repairing are given. This book gathers the presentation made during the Advanced Research Workshop held in Portoroz (Slovenia) in October 2008, under the auspices of NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. It is edited by Professor Guy Pluvinage from the University Paul Verlaine - Metz (France) and Professor Aleksandar Sedmak from the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Both have a long and rich experience in analysis of theoretical and practical cases in safety and reliability of structures. Other contributors are all known as experts in the areas of fatigue, facture and reliability of structures.
This book is a plea for a sympathetic approach to the conservation and repair of traditional stone buildings. These beautiful buildings are in danger of disappearing from the landscape because they are not yet properly understood. Here is a book about saving them by applying traditional techniques in a sympathetic manner, using materials and methods that are in harmony with their nature. Patrick McAfee, a stone-mason, conservation consultant and author of the bestselling Irish Stone Walls, shows how traditional stone buildings were originally constructed; he outlines the traditional techniques, tells how the stone was worked and details the proper methods of repair and maintenance. As well as dealing with stone, the book also covers lime mortars and other traditional finishes. Includes a survey of stone buildings world-wide. Much of the information is practical, hands-on, and intended for the enthusiastic householder as well as the more experienced builder, with step-by-step instructions from an acknowledged expert.
Mechanick Exercises: Or The Doctrine Of Handy-Works, was written, printed and published by Joseph Moxon between 1683 & 1685 and reprinted in 1703. Breaking away from Guild restrictions, Moxon wrote of what he knew from his experiences as a practitioner of skilled trades. A mathematician, writer, printer, publisher and maker of maps, globes and scientific instruments, Joseph Moxon was also the first tradesman to be awarded membership in the Royal Society of London. Mechanick Exercises popularized the secrets of the skilled trades of Smithing, Joinery, House Carpentry, Turning and Bricklaying, along with the making of Sun Dials. Mechanick Exercises is as important a reference today as a description of early skilled trades as it was in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

DON'T TEAR IT DOWN Preserving the Earthquake-Resistant Vernacular Architecture of Kashmir, makes the case for the preservation of the traditional domestic architecture that make up the urban form of Srinagar and the other cities in Kashmir. Published initially by UNESCO's New Delhi Office for distribution in Indian and Pakistan Administered Kashmir, the book is a product of UNESCO's mission to advance scientific understanding following the 2005 Kashmir earthquake which affected both Pakistan and India. The author, international heritage preservation consultant Randolph Langenbach, brings to it a vision of how the heritage buildings of Kashmir can become an armature on which to help rebuild people's pride of place after years of civil unrest. The work makes the case for preservation, not in spite of the antiquated construction of these buildings, but because of it. It is framed on the capacity of the best examples of Kashmiri traditional construction to resist one of Nature's most prodigious forces - earthquakes. By discussing two traditional forms of construction found in Kashmir: taq and dhajji dewari, this book documents an often ignored architectural heritage and a construction tradition that has demonstrated a level of earthquake-resistance that has led experts to introduce their attributes into the Indian and Pakistan building codes and to use features of them as the basis of ideas for how to improve the earthquake performance of modern structures of reinforced concrete.

Stroll through Larimer Square in Denver or through Pioneer Square in Seattle and you feel that you're stepping into history while browsing the expensive boutiques and tourist shops. But are you? In this intriguing study of some of America's favorite places, Judy Morley takes a fresh look at adaptive reuse efforts in cities of the former frontier. Focusing on urban preservation resulting from the competing interests of architectural preservationists, city planners, chambers of commerce, and boosters, she shows how developers have often taken artistic license to refashion the western past into shopping centers and tourist traps--in ways that privilege an imagined "heritage" over a more complex history. Examining Old Town Albuquerque, Larimer Square and LoDo in Denver, and Pioneer Square and Pike Place Market in Seattle, Morley describes the creation and marketing of western heritage under the guise of historic preservation. She draws on extensive interviews, city council proceedings, and historic plats and photographs to construct a detailed picture of how these districts originally looked and were used, how they were renovated, and to what ends they were marketed. This is the first book to systematically address issues of historic preservation and western urban growth, examining the interplay of identity, preservation, and tourism. It identifies the economic, political, and social issues that transformed each historic district into a place that resonated with the popular imagination. Along the way, Morley exposes the ironies that have attracted criticism to historic districts, such as Old Town Albuquerque's celebration of Hispanic heritage--even though Hispanic residents were displaced during the renovation--or Larimer Square's hiding of its actual skid-row past beneath a veneer of more tourist-friendly history. But while critics charge that historic preservation often celebrates a sanitized past, Morley suggests that these locales offer both residents and visitors a window on a shared romantic history and a sense of belonging, serving as vital locations for community festivals, holiday events, and even public gatherings in times of tragedy. "Historic Preservation and the Imagined West" argues that, although these districts did not so much preserve history as create mythic identities for their cities, they have in their way reconciled the past with the needs of the future.
This volume of papers presented at the Architectural Paint Research in Building Conservation conference held at the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen, provides a unique overview and discussion of the latest developments within the field.
Mother Ann Lee, founder of the Shakers, articulated a vision of a community that embraced sacrifice over the needs of the individual; the result was one of the most successful utopian experiments of nineteenth-century America. The Shakers, an idealistic offshoot of the ascetic Quaker religion, grew to as many as six thousand members in nineteen communities reaching from New England to the Midwest. Lee's experiment, focused mainly on simplicity, celibate communal living, and sexual equality, provided a model of prosperity for more than one hundred years. Founded in 1806, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky, was a thriving community located in the center of the bluegrass region. After the Civil War, a steadily shrinking membership resulted in the gradual decline of this remarkable community, and the last remaining Shaker to reside at Pleasant Hill died in 1923. In the years immediately following, it appeared as though the village would fall prey to neglect and a lack of historic preservation. In 1961, however, local citizens formed a private not-for-profit organization to preserve and restore the village and to interpret the rich heritage of the Pleasant Hill Shakers for future generations. Over several years, and against incredible odds, this group succeeded in raising the funds necessary for the restoration projects. By 1968, eight buildings at Shakertown, carefully adapted for modern use while retaining their historical and architectural significance, had been opened to the public. Thomas Parrish's Restoring Shakertown masterfully explains how the Shaker settlement was saved from the ravages of time and transformed into a nationally renowned landmark of historic preservation. In chronicling how the hopes of the early fund-raisers quickly were challenged by the harsh reality of economic hardships, the book serves as a valuable study in modern philanthropy. Parrish also details the village's negotiation of legal challenges and how its final plans for creating awareness of the Shakers' legacy set the standard for later museum developments around the country. In addition to recounting the remarkable history of the formation and eventual demise of the "Shaking Quakers," Parrish presents a dramatic chronicle of the village's evolving fortunes. From describing the challenges of financing the restoration to finding preservation experts to achieve the highest standards of authenticity, Restoring Shakertown reveals the complexities and rewards of the preservation of one of Kentucky's most significant historical and architectural sites.
Surveying the past, present, and future of historic preservation in America, this book features fifteen essays by some of the most important voices in the field. A Richer Heritage will be an essential, thought-provoking guide for professionals as well as administrators, volunteers, and policy makers involved in preservation efforts. An introduction traces the evolution of historic preservation in America, highlighting the principle ideas and events that have shaped and continue to shape the movement.
Two centuries ago Weston-super-Mare was a small, rarely visited village but its location alongside the Severn Estuary soon made it a convenient bathing place for the wealthy inhabitants of Bristol and Bath. Once the railway arrived in 1841, the handful of brave sea bathers became thousands of day trippers in search of fun and sunshine. Weston also became popular with excursionists and holidaymakers arriving by steamer from South Wales. To cater for all these visitors, the small entertainment and bathing facilities enjoyed by the wealthy Georgian elite were replaced by larger, more popular facilities, including two piers, Winter Gardens, a large swimming bath and a substantial open-air pool. Weston is not only a busy seaside resort, but a popular place to live. During the 19th century its population rose from around 100 to almost 20,000 and its handful of small, fisherman's cottages became a sea of terraces, crescents and villas constructed using the local stone. A distinctive type of villa emerged in Weston, different from those found at either of its larger neighbours. This was in large part due to Hans Fowler Price, the town's leading architect for more than half a century from 1860 until his death in 1912. The book celebrates the complex history and colourful heritage of the town. It also looks to the future to examine how its 200-year story might contribute to a prosperous future.
Stone is one of the oldest building materials, and its conservation
ranks as one of the most challenging in the field. The use of
alkoxysilanes in the conservation of stone can be traced as far
back as 1861, when A. W. von Hoffman suggested their use for the
deteriorating limestone on the Houses of Parliament in London.
Alkoxysilane-based formulations have since become the material of
choice for the consolidation of stone outdoors.l This volume, the
first to cover comprehensively alkoxysilanes in stone
consolidation, synthesizes the subject's vast and extensive
literature, which ranges from production of alkoxysilanes in the
nineteenth century to the extensive contributions from sol-gel
science in the 1980s and 90s. Included are a historical overview,
an annotated bibliography, and discussions of the following topics:
the chemistry and physics of alkoxysilanes and their gels; the
influence of stone type; commercial and noncommercial formulations;
practice; lab and field evaluation of service life; and recent
developments.
Handling this traditional but still captivating building material has its quirks, today perhaps more than ever. On the one hand it can no longer be taken for granted that stonemasonry skills will be readily available, while there are also new requirements and applications, not to mention damaging environmental influences, that create uncertainty for planners and implementers. This book is designed to provide assistance. - From cornice to curtain-walling: all details in words and sectional drawings - Are you looking for a particular stone? The most important domestic types of stone with supplier details - Various surface treatments and their visual effect - Documentation of 15 selected example applications |
