This work is an overview of the state of art on Ageing of Materials and structures in the world. Ageing of materials is a natural phenomenon. Each material we use will age. This ageing will influence the performance of the object where the materials is used. Furthermore, the ageing will be affected by the surroundings in which the object is placed. The main focus of the book is on materials used in infrastructure, energy, buildings and industry. The book in effect establishes the definition of ageing and its main research topics that are relevant for society.

The present report is the result of a survey conducted by the EPOCH FP6 Network of Excellence a some of the tasks planned within its Joint Program of Activity. Contributors were chosen in a way that they represent diverse actors in the field: university departments, research centres, commercial companies, cultural institutions, governmental agencies and SMEs. The publication of this report is expected to determine some beneficial effects, such as the improved knowledge of the state of the European Union in this field and the stimulation of contributions to the debate and new perspectives.

English summary: This series of articles presents the massive restoration work performed on the Basilica of San Marco between 2002 and 2009. Structural problems in the roof were addressed, while the experts surmounted the challenge of restoring the expansive works that adorned the interior ceilings and surfaces. Italian text. Italian description: Il volume contiene le testimonianze di coloro che hanno partecipato alla lunga stagione di restauri (2002-2009) della chiesa di San Marco. Dopo un restauro parziale risalente al 1958, il tetto della chiesa non era piu stato oggetto di interventi risolutivi volti a impedire le infiltrazioni d'acqua, inconveniente manifestatosi a piu riprese, con conseguenti gravi danni alle strutture portanti e al sottostante soffitto ligneo dorato che ospita la grande tela dipinta nel 1725 da Giovanni Antonio Pucci. Nel corso degli attuali restauri si e provveduto a mettere in sicurezza la copertura con una serie di interventi di grande impegno alle capriate quattrocentesche, applicando una tecnica di minimo intervento e procedendo senza lo smontaggio totale del tetto. Mentre si lavorava alle capriate, al piano inferiore del ponteggio e stato eseguito il restauro del soffitto ligneo decorato e dorato, nonche il restauro della tela dipinta con un complesso intervento di recupero conservativo ed estetico molto impegnativo anche per le inusuali dimensioni (oltre 50 mq) e per le difficolta di movimentazione dell'opera nell'esiguo spazio del cantiere. Durante i lavori sono state fatte due ritrovamenti: raffigurazioni e stemmi dipinti sulle catene delle capriate - prima non visibili perche celati da un tavolato - e l'iscrizione con il nome dell'autore della scultura raffigurante San Zanobi, precedentemente attribuita al Giambologna. Despite being South Africa’s capital city, Pretoria has often played a supporting role to bold and brash Johannesburg and Cape Town’s cosmopolitan charms. However, when it comes to architectural heritage, the ‘Jacaranda City’ is well-endowed.

From the skyline-dominating Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument, to the imposing edifices that make up its administrative precincts, Pretoria might almost be deserving of a second moniker: the city of sandstone, brick and granite. But when you look beyond the impressive façades, soaring columns and linear planes of buildings that were intended to convey power and authority, you’ll find light-filled interiors embellished with decorative touches that are only hinted at from the pavement. Murals, mosaics, domes, galleries, stained glass windows, gleaming brass and impressive woodwork are often hidden from view behind doors that are closed to the public. Even those museums, buildings and places of worship that are open to all have architectural and design features that are easily overlooked unless they’ve been pointed out.

The history of the city and, often, the country too, has been played out in many of the places featured in Hidden Pretoria. This story of our shared heritage deserves to be captured for a new generation so that they recognize the value in the built environment and the need to preserve the past in order to protect the future.
