This book brings together a thought-provoking collection of original contributions to the study of sexual crime prevention. The second section spotlights three in depth case studies of organisations delivering prevention work in the UK. Final sections of the book explore the service user experience, impact of the media, and attitudes and consideration of future directions for prevention work. The book is relevant not only to psychologists, criminologists, social workers and students, but to practitioners, researchers and anyone with an interest in learning about sexual crime prevention.

Trauma-Informed Forensic Practice (Paperback): Phil Willmot, Lawrence Jones Trauma-Informed Forensic Practice (Paperback)
Phil Willmot, Lawrence Jones
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Trauma-Informed Forensic Practice argues for placing trauma-informed practice and thinking at the heart of forensic services. It is written by forensic practitioners and service users from prison and forensic mental health, youth justice, and social care settings. It provides a compassionate theoretical framework for understanding the links between trauma and offending. It also gives practical guidance on working with issues that are particularly associated with a history of trauma in forensic settings, such as self-harm and substance use, as well as on working with groups who are particularly vulnerable to trauma, such as those with intellectual disabilities and military veterans. Finally, it considers organisational aspects of delivering trauma-informed care, not just for service users but for the staff who work in challenging and dangerous forensic environments. The book is the first of its kind to address such a broad range of issues and settings. It is aimed at forensic practitioners who wish to develop their own trauma-informed practice or trauma-responsive services. It also provides an accessible introduction to trauma-informed forensic practice for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Personality and Dangerousness - Genealogies of Antisocial Personality Disorder (Hardcover): David McCallum Personality and Dangerousness - Genealogies of Antisocial Personality Disorder (Hardcover)
David McCallum
R2,680 Discovery Miles 26 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tracing the history of the category of antisocial personality disorder, this study reveals its emergence is linked to particular kinds of governing, rather than simply to advances in the human sciences or a means of social control. David McCallum examines key legal and institutional developments in Australia, the U.K, and the U.S. as well as parallel developments within psychiatry and psychological medicine. Applying a social theoretical analysis to this material, he challenges our assumptions about the formation and control concepts of dangerousness and personality.

Desistance from Sexual Offending - The Role of Circles of Support and Accountability (Hardcover): Kelly Richards Desistance from Sexual Offending - The Role of Circles of Support and Accountability (Hardcover)
Kelly Richards
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how Circles of Support and Accountability can reduce sexual reoffending. The release of a notorious sex offender from prison strikes fear into members of the public. Media coverage often provokes further panic, casting such offenders as irredeemable monsters and ticking time bombs, destined to continue preying on innocent children and women. In the West, governments have responded by enacting heavily punitive and exclusionary policies, such as public sex offender registers, indefinite detention, and lifetime correctional supervision. A radically different approach - Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) - emerged alongside these measures. CoSA are groups of trained volunteers who collectively resist the exclusionary impulse, instead actively supporting those with sexual offence convictions to reintegrate into communities. Despite their seemingly counterintuitive nature, the research is clear that CoSA reduce sexual reoffending far better than more popular draconian sex offender management policies. However, little is understood about how CoSA work. This book begins to address this gap by proposing a new way of understanding how CoSA reduce sexual reoffending. Drawing on 65 in-depth interviews with CoSA participants, it offers a new theoretically-informed empirical explanation of CoSA's capacity to promote desistance from sexual offending, and to turn those convicted of sexual offenders into law-abiding and productive members of the community. Ultimately it is a call to action, demonstrating that we, the community, must play a more central role in integrating people with sexual offence convictions if we desire safer communities for our children and our selves. This work illuminates new directions for research, policy, and practice, and is essential reading for academics and students engaged in the study of criminology and criminal justice, restorative justice, sexual violence, and reentry

Laura Farrugia
R1,666 Discovery Miles 16 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Interviewing of Suspects with Mental Health Conditions and Disorders in England and Wales explores cutting-edge research that focuses specifically on these adults (including their cognitive needs and psychological vulnerabilities), the impact on the investigative interview, and existing legislation, guidance and practice. The book opens with a historical overview of the move from interrogation to investigative interviewing, including the impact of well-known miscarriages of justice and the inquiry that led to the development of current best practice interviewing. Further chapters focus on the concept of vulnerability within current theoretical frameworks, with a particular emphasis on mental health conditions and disorders, including how they are constructed, understood, and identified within legislation and by those working at the forefront of the criminal justice system. The book also examines current safeguards available to the suspect with mental health conditions and disorders, such as the Appropriate Adult; contemporary research explores their involvement with vulnerable suspects and whether it is sufficient, as well as how the Appropriate Adult understands and experiences their role. Final chapters scrutinise current best practice investigative interviewing of suspects with mental health conditions and disorders, and a paradigm shift towards an emerging evidence-based interview model that considers the vulnerabilities associated with suspects with mental health conditions and disorders in the investigative interview. Examining current psychological theory, contemporary research and existing legislation and guidance including authorised professional practice, this book will be of interest to those working within the criminal justice system, as well as policing and forensic psychology students. In particular, it is essential reading for all serving and trainee police officers, those delivering investigative interviewing training, and interviewing personnel, such as Appropriate Adults.

Nicole Rafter (Hardcover): Chase Burton Nicole Rafter (Hardcover)
Chase Burton
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a critical summary and exegesis of the work of Nicole Rafter, who was a leading scholar of the history of biological theories of crime causation as well as a profound theorist of the role of history within criminology. It introduces Rafter's key works and assesses her contributions to the fields of feminist criminology, cultural criminology, visual criminology and historical criminology. It also explores her theorization of criminology's identity, scientific status, and possible futures. While many books on criminological theory explain and historically contextualize theory, they do not interrogate the production of theory or the epistemological assumptions behind it. Drawing on the world of Nicole Rafter, this book offers an accessible handbook to her extensive historical studies and to how her work demonstrated the importance of historical theory to criminological knowledge. Furthermore, the author brings Rafter's historical research to life and shows how it speaks to contemporary issues in criminology and punishment. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars of criminological theory, intellectual history, sociology, comparative criminology, and feminist criminology.

Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault - Stranger Rape, Acquaintance Rape, and Intra-familial Child Sexual Assaults (Hardcover):... Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault - Stranger Rape, Acquaintance Rape, and Intra-familial Child Sexual Assaults (Hardcover)
Matthew Barry Johnson
R1,529 Discovery Miles 15 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault, Matthew Barry Johnson introduces new directions in wrongful conviction research and understanding. Citing Innocence Project and National Registry of Exoneration data, the book identifies sexual assault as the predominant offense type associated with confirmed wrongful convictions in the US. Johnson outlines the differential risk of wrongful conviction associated with stranger rape, acquaintance rape, and intra-familial child sexual abuse. He also introduces new terms and concepts such as "black box" investigation, illustrating the lack of transparency in the production of prosecution evidence; a four-part stranger rape thesis; and the "moral outrage - moral correction" process that results in cognitive and emotional factors that interfere with the evaluation of criminal evidence. The book also includes chapters on racial bias in rape prosecution, and the relationship of serial sex offending to wrongful conviction. Citing both foundational and newly-introduced conviction research, Johnson illustrates unexamined aspects of well-known wrongful conviction cases (i.e. The Central Park Five, Steve Avery, Ronald Cotton, The Norfolk Four) and presents the lessons from lesser known wrongful convictions. Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault provides valuable new perspectives and insight for psychologists, defense lawyers, prosecutors, crime investigators, and social justice scholars.

Theories of Terrorism - Contemporary Perspectives (Hardcover): Murat Haner, Melissa M. Sloan Theories of Terrorism - Contemporary Perspectives (Hardcover)
Murat Haner, Melissa M. Sloan
R4,520 Discovery Miles 45 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The key feature of the text is its concise, scholarly depth, and accessible format, which enable readers to gain a clear understanding of the theory that they may use in future research. Current texts on the market include redundant, lengthy presentations of theories that fail to distinguish among key theoretical contributions. Terrorism is an area of urgent global concern. The number of terrorism and homeland security-focused academic programs, think tanks, and research centers has dramatically increased over the past two decades. Many universities now offer courses on issues related to terrorism at both the undergraduate and graduate levels within the social science disciplines as well as interdisciplinary centers. Yet, there is only one text and a few book chapters on theories of terrorism. The approach that we will use in the book will make it attractive to academics, students, and policy makers who seek to develop theoretically-driven approaches to policy making. Considering the current number of programs on terrorism and homeland security within the United States alone, the growing emphasis on terrorism studies across the world, and the absence of a clear text on theories of terrorism, the demand should be quite high. This will be the only text that offers chapter-length descriptions of each stage of the radicalization process covering pressing issues in the field of terrorism.

Neurobiopsychosocial Perspectives on Aggression and Violence - From Biology to Law Enforcement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020):... Neurobiopsychosocial Perspectives on Aggression and Violence - From Biology to Law Enforcement (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jozsef Haller
R3,379 Discovery Miles 33 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book bridges the gap between basic science, which deals with general concepts of aggression and its neurobiological foundations, and law enforcement as one of the applied fields of aggression research. It addresses the current state of research and practice and compares and integrates the concept of aggression with violent crime. Chapters examine the types of criminal careers that cross the boundary between the two and summarize the biological, psychological, and social factors that underlie particular types of criminal careers. Subsequent chapters discuss overlaps between biological and psychological factors and detail how and to what extent aggression may serve as explanatory mechanisms for violence. The book also discusses the relationship between social problems and neuropsychological deficits, addressing how the neuropsychological deficits lead to the intergenerational recycling of social problems. Finally, the volume explores violence and aggression from a neurobiological perspective. Topics featured in this book include: The heritability of aggressiveness and violence-proneness. Glucocorticoids in humans. Aggression circuitry in animals. Distorted circuitry in violent animals. Biological factors of psychological change. Neurobiopsychosocial Perspectives on Aggression and Violence is a must-have resource for researchers, clinicians and other professionals, and graduate students in forensic psychology, criminology/criminal justice, public health, developmental psychology, psychotherapy/counseling, psychiatry, social work, educational policy and politics, health psychology, nursing, and behavioral therapy/rehabilitation.

Criminal Theory Profiles - Inside the Minds of Theorists of Crime and Deviance (Paperback): Joshua D. Behl, Leonard A. Steverson Criminal Theory Profiles - Inside the Minds of Theorists of Crime and Deviance (Paperback)
Joshua D. Behl, Leonard A. Steverson
R1,456 Discovery Miles 14 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings to life the major theories of crime and deviance by presenting detailed profiles that help readers differentiate each theory and its major propositions by better understanding how, when, and by whom the theory was formed. Criminology is based on strong theoretical foundations that attempt to answer the question of why people commit crime. Criminological theory is especially complex in that theorists come from a variety of disciplines including medicine, sociology, psychology, economics, and law. While not an exhaustive list of each theorist's works, nor an in-depth review of the empirical work that has been done on each theory, this text tracks the intellectual development of a theory by profiling the theorists who are responsible for the major ideas in criminological thought. By viewing the field in the context of the social conditions of the time and the personal histories of the theorists, students can better understand the intellectual history of each theory and the relationship between criminology and other fields, to grasp a better appreciation of how the science of crime and the study of criminals has evolved. All chapters are organized with a brief overview of the theorist and their significant ideas, a biographical profile of the theorist, coverage of the theoretical developments and contributions of the theorist, a list of major works by the theorist, and a summary detailing the overall legacy of the theorist in the field. This book is ideal for courses on criminology, criminological theory, and criminal behavior.

Self-Selection Policing - Theory, Research and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Jason Roach, Ken Pease Self-Selection Policing - Theory, Research and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Jason Roach, Ken Pease
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Self-Selection Policing introduces and explores an approach for crime control which seeks to identify active, serious offenders by attending to the minor offences they commit. A foundation of theory and evidence is first supplied for the assertion that 'those who do big bad things also do little bad things'. Original research presented in the book includes a study of offending by visitors to a prison, and the concurrent criminality of those committing common driving offences and failure to produce driving documents as required. It illustrates how self-selection can complement other police methods of identifying active, serious criminals by focusing on what offenders do rather than who they are and what they have done in the past. Concentrating on the 'usual suspects' in the conventional way is often criticised as harassment and self-selection policing largely bypasses the issue of fairness this raises. The book concludes with a call for the consideration, development and wider adoption of the self-selection approach, and particularly the identification of other common minor offences which flag concurrent active criminality. The authors make important suggestions for the progression of SSP research and practice, including the identification of barriers to the implementation of the approach in wider police thinking, practice and policy. Practical guidance is also provided for those thinking of developing, testing and implementing the approach. In doing so, the book will be of particular interest for policing practitioners, as well as students and scholars of policing and crime control.
