Dance the Hora, Isadora (Hardcover): Gloria Koster Dance the Hora, Isadora (Hardcover)
Gloria Koster; Illustrated by Barbara Bongini

A young girl learns the Hora at her cousin's wedding, then brings her new moves to dance class. Chloe is our step-dance star. Tap-tap go her toes. Up go her knees, reaching almost as high as her chin. When Chloe finished her routine last week, I felt Madame's eyes on me. "Isadora, would you like a turn? she asked. More than anything, I wanted to say yes, but I had nothing to share. If only I could shine like Lucy, Mateo, and Chloe. On the way home, Grandma could see I needed some cheering up. "Why such a sad face? she asked. "Everyone in class has a special dance," I said. "Everyone except me!" " I have a feeling you may have one very soon," Grandma said, "maybe even this weekend." I knew she was thinking about the wedding. On Sunday, Cousin Rachel was getting married to Adam. Excerpts from Deborah Kalb's Interview with Gloria Koster: DK: What inspired you to write Dance the Hora, Isadora!, and how did you create your character Isadora? GK: I wanted to write a wedding story in which the lens is focused on a child. While Isadora experiences the joy of the traditional dance and is able to teach it to her friends, she isn't happy throughout the story. It was important for me to imagine a real girl who initially experiences disappointment and who gains confidence with the support of a loving adult. DK: What do you think the book says about dancing, and the hora specifically, in Jewish tradition? GK: Though I have two left feet myself, I adore dancing. It's a way to clear my head, and I think Isadora's cares also melt away when she dances. The hora is new to her and also to her dance teacher and classmates, but everyone embraces the hora--typically, though not always, a Jewish dance--as happily as all the dances that reflect a variety of cultures (Latin dancing, step dancing, hip-hop, etc.) DK: What do you hope kids take away from the book? GK: I want kids to feel a kinship with Isadora, who is in a bit of a funk at first but feels like a superstar at the end. An the fact that she shares her traditional dance in a more secular setting will hopefully encourage all kids to proudly share things from their own cultures or religions.

Follow Clara on a magical Christmas adventure in this musical retelling of The Nutcracker ballet - push the button on each beautiful scene to hear the vivid sound of an orchestra playing from Tchaikovsky's original score. It is Christmas Eve at Clara's house. Scents of ginger, chocolate and peppermint waft through the air. Clara's parents are having a party, and her little brother Fritz is decorating the Christmas tree. Clara's godfather, a toymaker, arrives with gifts, including a very special one for her - a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. After Fritz breaks it, the children are sent to bed. The story follows Clara in her dreams as she battles and defeats a mouse king, then travels with her nutcracker-turned-prince to the Land of Sweets where she watches its enchanting inhabitants perform beautiful dances. As you and your little one journey through the magical scenes, you will press the buttons to hear 10 excerpts from the ballet's music, including 'The Waltz of the Flowers', 'The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy', 'The Russian Dance', and the awesome 'Finale'. Readers should press firmly on the pages to activate the sound board at the back of the book, encouraging interactive learning and introducing children to this beautiful piece of music. At the back of the book, find a short biography of the composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with details about his composition of The Nutcracker ballet. Next to this, you can replay the musical excerpts and, for each of them, read a discussion of the instruments, rhythms and musical techniques that make them so powerful. A glossary defines musical terms. The Story Orchestra series brings classical music to life for children through gorgeously illustrated retellings of classic ballet, opera and program music stories paired with 10-second sound clips of orchestras playing from their musical scores. With The Story Orchestra keyboard sound books, children can play the famous melodies themselves with the sound of a real grand piano. Also available from the Story Orchestra series: The Magic Flute, I Can Play (vol 1), Carnival of the Animals, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Four Seasons in One Day. Manufacturer's note: please pull the white tab out of the back of the book before use. Sound buttons require a firm push in exact location to work, which may be hard for young children. All sound clips are 10 seconds long. The perfect primer to introduce children to classical music.

Stompin' at the Savoy - The Story of Norma Miller (Hardcover): Alan Govenar Stompin' at the Savoy - The Story of Norma Miller (Hardcover)
Alan Govenar; Illustrated by Martin French
R504 Discovery Miles 5 040 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Through extensive interviews with jazz dancer Norma Miller, acclaimed author and filmmaker Alan Govenar captures the vitality, wry humor, and indomitable spirit of an American treasure.
When she was just five years old, in 1924, Norma Miller knew just what she wanted to do for the rest of her life: she wanted to dance. It was the Jazz Age, the Harlem Renaissance, and Norma lived behind New York's Savoy Ballroom, the only dance hall in a still-segregated America where blacks and whites could mingle on the same mahogany floor. It was in this majestic "home of happy feet" that twelve-year-old Norma first brought the house down, swing-stepping with Twist Mouth George, one of the premier dancers of the day. Before long, the feisty Norma would rise to fame as one of the first performers of the Lindy Hop, an acrobatic dance style named for Charles Lindbergh's first solo flight (or "hop") across the Atlantic. With the celebrated dance troupe Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, a teenage Norma would cross the Atlantic herself on a tour of Europe and even strut her stuff on the silver screen.
In this invigorating, humorous, and thought-provoking oral autobiography, Alan Govenar captures the sound and spirit of Norma Miller's voice as she recalls her early years and coming of age as a determined young dancer during the heyday of swing. Augmenting her lively narrative are Martin French's jazzy, singlecolor illustrations, evoking the vibrant style of vintage poster art.

There's a lot more to dance education than steps and dances. To be successful, dance educators must practice a variety of skills that go far beyond dancing. They must incorporate educational theories to meet state and national arts standards, establish a solid knowledge base of the dance form to be taught, and set up developmentally appropriate learning experiences.

To help aspiring dance educators acquire the skills that will make them successful in the classroom, this book provides vital information on teaching methods in general, then shares specific applications for teaching each dance form.

"Dance Teaching Methods and Curriculum Design" presents a conceptual model of dance education that embraces dance as an art form and disseminates it through learning experiences in dancing, dance making, and dance appreciation. Through this book, dance educators will broaden their understanding of the dance content that is appropriate for their students and their educational setting.

Part I presents an overview of the teaching and learning process in dance, including the background information necessary to plan, organize, set up, and deliver an effective learning experience. It provides essential information about the national standards in dance and guides readers smoothly through the process of - identifying both dance content knowledge and teacher knowledge, - developing observation skills, - being aware of how students learn movement, - constructing a dance class, - choosing a presentational method, - addressing student behaviors in the classroom, - analyzing the learning environment, and- teaching for artistic development across various dance forms.

Part II offers ideas for unit and curriculum development, design, and evaluation. Readers will learn how to create learning experiences, lesson plans, unit plans, and finally a dance curriculum. They will become familiar with four categories of dance that encompass 10 dance forms; they also will discover the application of movement, choreographic, and aesthetic principles to these dance forms. Readers will find step-by-step instructions for teaching beginning dance units in 10 different dance forms to offer a curriculum of experiences for students in preschool to college settings.

This book contains many special features so that readers can access important information quickly:
