Graph-Based Clustering and Data Visualization Algorithms (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Agnes Vathy-Fogarassy, Janos Abonyi Graph-Based Clustering and Data Visualization Algorithms (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Agnes Vathy-Fogarassy, Janos Abonyi
R1,634 Discovery Miles 16 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work presents a data visualization technique that combines graph-based topology representation and dimensionality reduction methods to visualize the intrinsic data structure in a low-dimensional vector space. The application of graphs in clustering and visualization has several advantages. A graph of important edges (where edges characterize relations and weights represent similarities or distances) provides a compact representation of the entire complex data set. This text describes clustering and visualization methods that are able to utilize information hidden in these graphs, based on the synergistic combination of clustering, graph-theory, neural networks, data visualization, dimensionality reduction, fuzzy methods, and topology learning. The work contains numerous examples to aid in the understanding and implementation of the proposed algorithms, supported by a MATLAB toolbox available at an associated website.

Recommender Systems and the Social Web - Leveraging Tagging Data for Recommender Systems (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Fatih Gedikli Recommender Systems and the Social Web - Leveraging Tagging Data for Recommender Systems (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Fatih Gedikli
R1,635 Discovery Miles 16 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There is an increasing demand for recommender systems due to the information overload users are facing on the Web. The goal of a recommender system is to provide personalized recommendations of products or services to users. With the advent of the Social Web, user-generated content has enriched the social dimension of the Web. As user-provided content data also tells us something about the user, one can learn the user s individual preferences from the Social Web. This opens up completely new opportunities and challenges for recommender systems research. Fatih Gedikli deals with the question of how user-provided tagging data can be used to build better recommender systems. A tag recommender algorithm is proposed which recommends tags for users to annotate their favorite online resources. The author also proposes algorithms which exploit the user-provided tagging data and produce more accurate recommendations. On the basis of this idea, he shows how tags can be used to explain to the user the automatically generated recommendations in a clear and intuitively understandable form. With his book, Fatih Gedikli gives us an outlook on the next generation of recommendation systems in the Social Web sphere.

Advances in K-means Clustering - A Data Mining Thinking (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Junjie Wu Advances in K-means Clustering - A Data Mining Thinking (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Junjie Wu
R2,626 Discovery Miles 26 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nearly everyone knows K-means algorithm in the fields of data mining and business intelligence. But the ever-emerging data with extremely complicated characteristics bring new challenges to this "old" algorithm. This book addresses these challenges and makes novel contributions in establishing theoretical frameworks for K-means distances and K-means based consensus clustering, identifying the "dangerous" uniform effect and zero-value dilemma of K-means, adapting right measures for cluster validity, and integrating K-means with SVMs for rare class analysis. This book not only enriches the clustering and optimization theories, but also provides good guidance for the practical use of K-means, especially for important tasks such as network intrusion detection and credit fraud prediction. The thesis on which this book is based has won the "2010 National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award", the highest honor for not more than 100 PhD theses per year in China.

A General Framework for Reasoning On Inconsistency (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Maria Vanina Martinez, Cristian Molinaro, V.S.... A General Framework for Reasoning On Inconsistency (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Maria Vanina Martinez, Cristian Molinaro, V.S. Subrahmanian, Leila Amgoud
R1,167 Discovery Miles 11 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This SpringerBrief proposes a general framework for reasoning about inconsistency in a wide variety of logics, including inconsistency resolution methods that have not yet been studied. The proposed framework allows users to specify preferences on how to resolve inconsistency when there are multiple ways to do so. This empowers users to resolve inconsistency in data leveraging both their detailed knowledge of the data as well as their application needs. The brief shows that the framework is well-suited to handle inconsistency in several logics, and provides algorithms to compute preferred options. Finally, the brief shows that the framework not only captures several existing works, but also supports reasoning about inconsistency in several logics for which no such methods exist today.
