R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The LNCS journal Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems focuses on data management, knowledge discovery, and knowledge processing, which are core and hot topics in computer science. Since the 1990s, the Internet has become the main driving force behind application development in all domains. An increase in the demand for resource sharing across different sites connected through networks has led to an evolution of data- and knowledge-management systems from centralized systems to decentralized systems enabling large-scale distributed applications providing high scalability. Current decentralized systems still focus on data and knowledge as their main resource. Feasibility of these systems relies basically on P2P (peer-to-peer) techniques and the support of agent systems with scaling and decentralized control. Synergy between grids, P2P systems, and agent technologies is the key to data-and knowledge-centered systems in large-scale environments. This, the 10th issue of Transactions on Large-Scale Data- and Knowledge-Centered Systems, contains seven full papers chosen following two additional rounds of reviewing from revised and extended versions of a selection of papers presented at DEXA 2012. Topics covered include formal modelling and verification of web services, incremental computation of skyline queries, the implication problem for XML keys, lossless data compression, declarative view selection methods, time awareness in recommender systems, and network data mining."

A General Framework for Reasoning On Inconsistency (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Maria Vanina Martinez, Cristian Molinaro, V.S.... A General Framework for Reasoning On Inconsistency (Paperback, 2013 ed.)
Maria Vanina Martinez, Cristian Molinaro, V.S. Subrahmanian, Leila Amgoud
R1,167 Discovery Miles 11 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This SpringerBrief proposes a general framework for reasoning about inconsistency in a wide variety of logics, including inconsistency resolution methods that have not yet been studied. The proposed framework allows users to specify preferences on how to resolve inconsistency when there are multiple ways to do so. This empowers users to resolve inconsistency in data leveraging both their detailed knowledge of the data as well as their application needs. The brief shows that the framework is well-suited to handle inconsistency in several logics, and provides algorithms to compute preferred options. Finally, the brief shows that the framework not only captures several existing works, but also supports reasoning about inconsistency in several logics for which no such methods exist today.

Integration of Information and Optimization Models for Routing in City Logistics (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Jan Ehmke Integration of Information and Optimization Models for Routing in City Logistics (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Jan Ehmke
R2,631 Discovery Miles 26 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As urban congestion continues to be an ever increasing problem, routing in these settings has become an important area of operations research. This monograph provides cutting-edge research, utilizing the recent advances in technology, to quantify the value of dynamic, time-dependent information for advanced vehicle routing in city logistics. The methodology of traffic data collection is enhanced by GPS based data collection, resulting in a comprehensive number of travel time records. Data Mining is also applied to derive dynamic information models as required by time-dependent optimization. Finally, well-known approaches of vehicle routing are adapted in order to handle dynamic information models. This book interweaves the usually distinct areas of traffic data collection, information retrieval and time-dependent optimization by an integrated methodological approach, which refers to synergies of Data Mining and Operations Research techniques by example of city logistics applications. These procedures will help improve the reliability of logistics services in congested urban areas.

Robson Leonardo Ferreira Cordeiro, Christos Faloutsos, Caetano Traina Junior
R1,698 Discovery Miles 16 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The amount and the complexity of the data gathered by current enterprises are increasing at an exponential rate. Consequently, the analysis of Big Data is nowadays a central challenge in Computer Science, especially for complex data. For example, given a satellite image database containing tens of Terabytes, how can we find regions aiming at identifying native rainforests, deforestation or reforestation? Can it be made automatically? Based on the work discussed in this book, the answers to both questions are a sound "yes", and the results can be obtained in just minutes. In fact, results that used to require days or weeks of hard work from human specialists can now be obtained in minutes with high precision. Data Mining in Large Sets of Complex Data discusses new algorithms that take steps forward from traditional data mining (especially for clustering) by considering large, complex datasets. Usually, other works focus in one aspect, either data size or complexity. This work considers both: it enables mining complex data from high impact applications, such as breast cancer diagnosis, region classification in satellite images, assistance to climate change forecast, recommendation systems for the Web and social networks; the data are large in the Terabyte-scale, not in Giga as usual; and very accurate results are found in just minutes. Thus, it provides a crucial and well timed contribution for allowing the creation of real time applications that deal with Big Data of high complexity in which mining on the fly can make an immeasurable difference, such as supporting cancer diagnosis or detecting deforestation.
