This book is a comprehensive guide to 3D printing and 3D bioprinting methods and their application in oral and maxillofacial surgeries. Among the 3D printing methods considered are fused deposition modeling, selective laser sintering, photopolymer jetting, powder binder printing, and stereolithography, while the coverage of 3D bioprinting encompasses inkjet, microextrusion, and laser techniques. In each case, the relevance of the technique to oral and maxillofacial surgery is explained. In addition, the available inks and bioinks for 3D printing are reviewed. The roles of soft and hard tissue printing in oral and maxillofacial tissue engineering and the use of 3D printing in multi- and interfacial tissue engineering are then examined in depth. The particular value of 3D printing in the treatment of critically sized defects is discussed separately. Finally, up-to-date information is provided on guided tissue/bone regeneration using 3D printing. The book will be of interest to both oral and maxillofacial surgeons and biomedical engineers.
Orofacial pain - defined aspain lasting over three months in the
mouth or face - is increasing in prevelance, with approximately 7%
of the UK population having experienced it. It is currently managed
by either dentists or general medical practitioners, both of whom
have radically different approaches to treatment. While management
of orofacial pain has improved quite dramatically over recent
years, it is essential that dentists and general practitioners are
aware of these advances and of the differences in their approaches.

Maxillary sinus elevation, followed by placement of a wide variety of grafting materials, has been the generally accepted surgical protocol for the development of bone in the sinus cavity. Over the years, various techniques have been proposed for maxillary sinus elevation, which differ in surgical approach, bone graft materials, and advanced technology application for hard tissue and soft tissue management. Dr. Kao and a team of experts begin by discussing anatomy, radiographic image applications and limitations, and then provide step-by-step clinical procedures for the lateral window technique, including piezosurgery, and the trans-alveolar methods, including balloon and controlled hydostatic sinus elevation. Also included are chapters on post-operative care and complication management.

Children's dental health involves much more than a toothbrush. Dental disease is the number one chronic childhood illness, and avoiding dental disease means paying scrupulous attention to our children's teeth. In Your Child's Teeth, health writers Evelina Weidman Sterling and Angie Best-Boss team up with pediatric dentists and oral health experts to answer parents' many questions about children's teeth. Topics include: how thumb sucking and pacifiers affect teeth; how to brush your young children's teeth; how to calm a child who is afraid of the dentist; how to help special needs children get proper dental care; how medical problems affect teeth; how fluoride rinses and dental sealants work; how a root canal is done; and how to make the orthodontia decision. This book will help parents help children develop good dental habits for a lifetime of healthy teeth-from baby's first tooth to the young adult's shining smile.
This book is directed primarily at undergraduate dental students and the newly-qualified dentist but it will also be of value to medical and dental educationalists. In its concept and content it is closely aligned to recent developments in dental education in the United Kingdom by reference to the General Dental Council's recommendations for the Undergraduate Dental Curriculum and the Quality Assurance Agency's Benchmark Statements for Dentistry. This facilitates the description of Essential Skills for Dentists in the light of contemporary documentation, and the authors of the various chapters have been chosen on the basis of their clinical and educational expertise within the dental establishments of Great Britain and Ireland. The book is divided into three main sections dealing with generic skills, discipline specific skills, and integrated skills respectively, thus enabling comprehensive coverage with cross-referencing as appropriate. The core function of the book is to facilitate learning and by clearly defining the learning outcomes, using checklists for in-course formative assessment of defined clinical competencies and the use of mind maps to facilitate revision, the book aims to integrate the complementary relationship between learning and assessment. The topic-oriented layout of the book allows the graduate or trainee to dip into specific topics or subjects on a stand-alone basis, and references and further reading are provided to facilitate exploration of the subject in greater detail if desired.
Human Oral Mucosa: Development, Structure and Function is a new text that reflects the considerable increase in knowledge of oral mucosa that has occurred in recent years. Our understanding of the structure of oral mucosa is now established at a molecular rather than a tissue or cellular level. This in turn has revealed a level of function that was previously not suspected, including a sophisticated barrier to the penetration of exogenous materials, and the synthesis of specific antimicrobial compounds, representing components of the innate immune system. There is also a growing realization of commonality in structure and function between regions of oral mucosa and the mucosae of the esophagus and vagina. The aim of the present volume is to provide a more sophisticated text on human oral mucosa than presently exists in textbooks and to bring together information that is otherwise to be found in separate, specialist volumes into a comprehensive text. It relates structure at the molecular, cellular and tissue level to function and to clinical behavior. The volume is directed to advanced students and researchers in oral biology, as well as those in allied areas of investigation, such as dermatology, gynecology, internal medicine and pathology.

Lesions of the oral cavity have an enormous impact on the quality
of life of patients with advanced disease. They cause considerable
morbidity and diminish a patient's physical and psychological
well-being. Oral complications impair oral nutrition and can cause
a variety of problems including malnutrition, anorexia, and
cachexia. Psychological problems relate to the role that the oral
cavity plays in communication and social life. This book provides
comprehensive, clinically relevant, evidence-based guidelines on
oral problems to ensure first rate care. The scientific foundations
and research base for their management underpin the discussion
throughout.
Human Disease for Dentistry will help the dental student to
understand the manifestations of human diseases and disorders and
the diagnostic services used in their investigations and treatment.
Many medical conditions of other systems manifest themselves in the
mouth, and dental students are
People who suffer from chronic pain are typically found to be more
anxious and fearful of pain than those who do not. Recent evidence
has shown that the pain itself serves as a mechanism through which
chronic pain is maintained over time. Even once the muscle or
tissue damage is healed, a fear of further pain can lead to
avoidance behavior, which over time, leads to deconditioning (e.g.
decreased mobility, weight gain). This in turn leads to further
experiences, negative expectancies, and strengthened avoidance. It
is the reciprocal relationship between fear and avoidance that is
thought to be responsible for maintaining pain behavior and
disability.
This book is aimed at the undergraduate dental student, the general dental practitioner with an interest in orthodontics and students at the start of their postgraduate orthodontic training. The book assumes the reader has progressed down the path of orthodontic diagnosis and is in the process of formulating a treatment plan. Such planning requires the orthodontist to have a sound understanding of the biological principles of tooth movement, as well as to be aware of the treatment ideals and limitations. Knowledge of the various types of orthodontic appliances, their design and likely mode of action is also essential. Closely linked to this, advances in materials science have lead to great changes in orthodontic clinical practice in recent years. A chapter on orthodontic materials is therefore included. Orthodontic treatment is not without risk and there is a chapter on iatrogenic effects. Finally, with increasing specialisation there is a need to call upon the services of colleagues from other specialities in treating complex cases and so multidisciplinary treatments are also covered. The uses and benefits of soft-tissue lasers in dental hygiene practice are myriad. Lasers are used for more effective debridement, scaling and planning, with less pain and bleeding. Hygienists can detect sub- and supra-gingival calculus, remove the bacteria in pockets, and remove granulation, among other treatments. "Soft-tissue Lasers in Dental Hygiene" is the first book to explain laser use in periodontal therapy. Authors Jessica Blayden and Angie Mott are registered dental hygienists who have been using laser therapy in their dental hygiene practices for several years, and here they share their experience. Blayden and Mott begin by discussing laser history, physics, components, and safety. They then describe the specifics of periodontal therapy--what lasers can be used for, how to implement them, techniques, and protocols. The authors also present case studies that demonstrate how treatment plans are implemented for varying levels of periodontal disease. The authors conclude with chapters on patient communication and practice management.

It addresses both the behavioral and clinical aspects of diagnosis and treatment and covers treatment modalities including osseointegration, overdentures, implant-supported fixed prosthesis, and the current and future directions of implant prosthodontics. New to this edition are full-color photographs and coverage of immediately loaded complete dental prostheses. From lead editor and respected educator George Zarb, Prosthodontic Treatment for Edentulous Patients provides an atlas of clinical procedures and emphasizes the importance of evidence-based treatment. Short, easy-to-read chapters cover the essentials of care for both short- and long-term patients, stressing the importance of evidence-based treatment. Expanded coverage of implant prosthodontics addresses the clinical protocols for implant-retained and implant-supported prosthodontic management. Specific chapters address the three surfaces of the complete denture: (1) an impression or intaglio surface, (2) a polished surface, and (3) an occlusal surface, the integration of which is crucial to creating a stable, functional, and esthetic result. Chapter on health and nutrition examines a number of systemic conditions (vesciculoerosive conditions, systemic lupus erythematosus, burning mouth syndrome, salivary dysfunction, Sjoegren's syndrome, hyper/hyposalivation, diabetes) that affect the oral cavity and specifically influence the prognosis for wearing complete dentures or for accepting osseointegrated prostheses. Chapter on the time-dependent changes which occur in the oral cavity focuses on both time-related direct (ulcer/cheek biting, irritation hyperplasia, denture stomatitis, flabby ridge and pendulous maxillary tuberosities, hyperkeratosis and oral cancer, residual ridge reduction) and indirect (atrophy of masticatory muscles, nutritional status and masticatory function, control of sequelae) changes in the oral environment, and provides strategies to minimize the risk of such changes. Chapter on the techniques used to prolong the life of complete dentures focuses on the two techniques used to extend the life of dentures: relining and rebasing, also touching on denture duplication. Well-respected editors and contributors are the leaders in their field, lending credibility and experience to each topic. NEW! Over 800 full-color photos and illustrations highlight key clinical and esthetic details.
